The most practical chemical engineering book ever!!!!.......2007-05-02
If you are a working chemical or process engineer this book is great to check how equipments are really built. If you are a student or a professor, you may not found it very helpful. It shows you for real how equipments are design with several constructive details.
Overwhelming.......2006-11-10
Tons of information but nearly useless for the process design course that I am taking this semester. Avoid paying full price because it is like a big reference book
This is Not Perry's.......2005-04-16
The book starts out with some refinery flow sheets for making 'grasoline' from 'californing' crude. Process control is simple enough. The next section on fluid flow uses non-standard equations which are overly complex. The same goes for heat transfer. Fair does a good job on distillation. Reaction engineering is completly omited from this text.
The most practical chemical engineering reference book.......1997-09-22
For the working chemical process design engineer, this is the best reference I've come across. It tells you how to pick equipment and generally how to determine equipment sizes. As a design or procurement engineer you work with vendors to make final equipment selection, but this book gives you what you need to know before you start talking to the vendors. It bridges the gap between theory you can get from textbooks and detailed applications you can get from sales literature. I'm surprised this book hasn't caught on as a standard in the chemical engineering profession

Book Description
In this volume, the third in a set specifically written for the industrial process and chemical engineer, the authors provide the detailed information on filtration equipment and media which allows the reader to then consider the pre-treatment of suspensions, selection of the most appropriate equipment for the task, data analysis and the subsequent design of the processes involved for particular separations.
The result is a comprehensive book which is designed to be used frequently and referred to regularly in order to achieve better industrial separations.
Successful industrial-scale separation of solids from liquids requires not only a thorough understanding of the principles involved, but also an appreciation of which equipment to use for best effect, and a start-to-finish plan for the various processes involved in the operation. If these factors are all correct, then successful separations should result.
*Part of 3-volume set
*Unique approach to industrial separations
*Internationally-known authors
Book Description
-Chemical Process Equipment is a guide to the selection and design of a wide range of chemical process equipment.
-Emphasis is placed on specific information concerning the process design and performance of equipment.
To this end, attention is given to examples of successful applications, and a generous number of line sketches showing the functioning of equipment is included with many graphs and tables giving their actual performance. For coherence, brief reviews of perininent theory, including numerical examples to illustrate the more involved procedures, are provided in key chapters.
This book provides a wealth of valuable shortcut methods, rules of thumb, and design by analogy applications. References to sources of more accurate design procedures are cited whenever they are available. To illustrate the data essential to process design, a substantial number of equipment rating forms and manufacturers' questionnaires have been collected. Because decisions often must be based on economic grounds, a short chapter on costs of equipment rounds out the book.

Book Description
The long awaited second edition of
Dynamic Optimization is now available. Clear exposition and numerous worked examples made the first edition the premier text on this subject. Now, the new edition is expanded and updated to include essential coverage of current developments on differential games, especially as they apply to important economic questions; new developments in comparative dynamics; and new material on optimal control with integral state equations.
The second edition of
Dynamic Optimization provides expert coverage on:- methods of calculus of variations - optimal control - continuous dynamic programming - stochastic optimal control -differential games. The authors also include appendices on static optimization and on differential games.
Now in its new updated and expanded edition,
Dynamic Optimization is, more than ever, the optimum choice for graduate and advanced undergraduate courses in economics, mathematical methods in economics and dynamic optimization, management science, mathematics and engineering.
New features of
Dynamic Optimization will show students:advances in how to do comparative dynamics; how to optimally switch from one state equation to another during the planning period; how to take into account the history of the system governing an optimization problem through the use of an integral state equation; and how to apply differential games to problems in economics and management sciences.
Customer Reviews:
Great clear textbook.......2007-01-27
I believe this was the first textbook to introduce dynamic optimization to economists. It's simply and clearly written. Each chapter introduces a new development, goes into the theory behind it and gives examples, in just a few pages so you can go through it in bite-sized chunks. The style is unfussy but doesn't talk down to you. Two appendices explain important theorems in calculus and differential equations, briefly but in enough detail to be usable if you aren't familiar with those parts of the maths. This is an excellent textbook, although I can't compare it with the competition.
Chiang's book is best........2001-05-04
This book is decent, but I think that Chiang book is better that this book, I recommend "Elements of Dynamic Optimization" from Alpha Chiang (ISBN: 157766096X), it's better.
A must book for every serious economics student.......2001-02-15
There is no doubt that to master in advanced economics one should have a firm grasp on mathematical tools. Kamien and Schwartz's Dynamiz Optimization is the perfect book to this end. Actually it deserves a rating more than five stars.

Book Description
There have been many wonderful developments in the theory of minimal surfaces and geometric measure theory in the past 25 to 30 years. Many of the researchers who have produced these excellent results were inspired by this little book--or by Fred Almgren himself.
The book is indeed a delightful invitation to the world of variational geometry. A central topic is Plateau's Problem, which is concerned with surfaces that model the behavior of soap films. When trying to resolve the problem, however, one soon finds that smooth surfaces are insufficient: Varifolds are needed. With varifolds, one can obtain geometrically meaningful solutions without having to know in advance all their possible singularities. This new tool makes possible much exciting new analysis and many new results.
Plateau's problem and varifolds live in the world of geometric measure theory, where differential geometry and measure theory combine to solve problems which have variational aspects. The author's hope in writing this book was to encourage young mathematicians to study this fascinating subject further. Judging from the success of his students, it achieves this exceedingly well.

An elegant application of differential geometry.......2006-04-18
This book is well-illustrated and motivates all of its theorems. In order to get anything out of this text, one should at least be familiar with basic algebraic topology of surfaces (I recommend Kinsey's "Topology of Surfaces" for beginners) and should know the calculus of differential forms and chains in Spivak's "Calculus on Manifolds". It makes for a good read aftwerwards.
Book Description
This book presents a self-contained and up-to-date account of the theory of viscosity solutions for first order partial differential equations of Hamilton-Jacobi type and its interplay with Bellman's Dynamic Programming approach to optimal control and differential games, as it developed after the beginning of the eighties with the pioneering work of M. Crandall and P.L. Lions. The book begins with a long introduction where the authors present in a rather informal way the main ideas and themes of the book, beginning with the classical derivation of the Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation from the Dynamic Programming Optimality Principle and the characterization of the value function as the unique viscosity solution of this equation. This is followed by a treatment of the general theory of continuous viscosity solutions and its applications to a number of problems in deterministic optimal control theory for nonlinear systems(infinite and finite horizon, minimal time, optimal stopping, impulse control, problems with state constraints, etc.)The second part of the book develops the theory of discontinuous viscosity solutions and its applications to asymptotic problems (singular perturbations, ergodic problems, etc.), to some approximation schemes for the value function and for optimal feedback controls based on Dynamic Programming. The last chapter and appendix deal, respectively, with differential games and nonlinear H-infinity control.
The book will be of interest to scientists involved in the theory of optimal control of deterministic linear and nonlinear systems. In particular it will appeal to system theorists wishing to learn about a recent mathematical theory providing a correct framework for the classical method of Dynamic Programming and mathematicians interested in new recent methods for first order nonlinear PDEs. The books historical notes provide a guide to a fairly complete bibliography including more than 500 titles. Some suggestions of how to present the material to students will make it ideal as a graduate course text as well as a self-teaching tool for practicing control mathematicians and engineers.

Book Description
This book presents some facts and methods of Mathematical Control Theory treated from the geometric viewpoint. It is devoted to finite-dimensional deterministic control systems governed by smooth ordinary differential equations. The problems of controllability, state and feedback equivalence, and optimal control are studied.
Some of the topics treated by the authors are covered in monographic or textbook literature for the first time while others are presented in a more general and flexible setting than elsewhere.
Although being fundamentally written for mathematicians, the authors make an attempt to reach both the practitioner and the theoretician by blending the theory with applications. They maintain a good balance between the mathematical integrity of the text and the conceptual simplicity that might be required by engineers. It can be used as a text for graduate courses and will become most valuable as a reference work for graduate students and researchers.

Book Description
The aim of this book is to present the mathematical theory and the know-how to make computer programs for the numerical approximation of Optimal Control of PDE's. The computer programs are presented in a straightforward generic language. As a consequence they are well structured, clearly explained and can be translated easily into any high level programming language. Applications and corresponding numerical tests are also given and discussed. To our knowledge, this is the first book to put together mathematics and computer programs for Optimal Control in order to bridge the gap between mathematical abstract algorithms and concrete numerical ones.
The text is addressed to students and graduates in Mathematics, Mechanics, Applied Mathematics, Numerical Software, Information Technology and Engineering. It can also be used for Master and Ph.D. programs.

Book Description
The text provides an introduction to the variational methods used to formulate and solve mathematical and physical problems and gives the reader an insight into the systematic use of elementary (partial) convexity of differentiable functions in Euclidian space. By helping students directly characterize then the solutions for many minimization problems, the text serves as a prelude to the field theory for sufficiency. It lays the groundwork for further explorations in mathematics, physics, mechanical and electrical engineering, and computer science.

Introductory and readable, yet rigorous.......2000-05-08
I had read/studied most of this book when I was a graduate student in chemical engineering at Syracuse University (in 1987-88). I also took two courses on the subject from Professor Troutman. I strongly recommend this book to any "newcomer" to the subject. The author is a mathematician, and a large fraction of the book consists of theorems, lemmas, propositions, corollaries (and their rigorous proofs). The book also contains, however, a good number of illustrative examples and exercises which make it useful to engineers and scientists as well as to students of mathematics who want to learn more about applications of mathematics to physical sciences.

Calculus of Variations
ASIN: 0198514891 |
Book Description
A paperback edition of this successful textbook for final year undergraduate mathematicians and control engineering students, this book contains exercises and many worked examples, with complete solutions and hints making it ideal not only as a class textbook but also for individual study. The intorduction to optimal control begins by considering the problem of minimizing a function of many variables, before moving on to the main subject: the optimal control of systems governed by ordinary differential equations.
Customer Reviews:
Superb.......1999-05-13
I have read a large number of books on this field. This is by far the most comprehensive book on the subject. It is suitable for self study, and gives a true jist for optimal control
Not enough words.......1998-08-23
If you have a good professor to guide your through, this book may be ok. If you're on your own - forget about it.
A genuinely readable introdution for the applied scientist.......1998-06-15
This is an excellent introduction to the calculus of variations and Pontryagin's Maximum Principle. It is written exceptionally clearly and gives the reader access to the calculus without becoming bogged down in lengthy diffcult proofs (which are left to the end).
I recommend this book to any student or scientist who is not a pure mathematician but wishes to understand and apply analytic tools of optimization.
