    Book Description

The activation of dioxygen by metal ions has both synthetic potential and biological relevance. Dioxygen is the cleanest oxidant for use in emission-free technologies to minimize pollution of the environment. The book gives a survey of those catalyst systems based on metal complexes which have been discovered and studied in the last decade. They activate molecular oxygen and effect the oxidation of various organic compounds under mild conditions. Much of the recent progress is due to a search for biomimetic catalysts that would duplicate the action of metalloenzymes. Mechanistic aspects are emphasized throughout the book. An introductonary chapter reviews the chemistry of transition metal dioxygen complexes, which are usually the active intermediates in the catalytic reactions discussed. Separate chapters are devoted to oxidation of saturated, unsaturated and aromatic hydrocarbons, phenols, catechols, oxo-compounds, phosphorus, sulfur and nitrogen compounds.

        Book Description

The catalytic activation of dioxygen continues to attract interest both due to its biological importance and synthetic potential. Metalloenzymes play crucial roles in metabolism by living organisms. The modelling of metalloenzymes by biomimetic metal complexes helps the search for useful oxidation catalysts and the understanding of their mechanisms of operation. Dioxygen is also the oxidant of choice in emission-free technologies aimed at minimising pollution of the environment, in line with the green chemistry requirements. This volume is devoted to recent progress in the field of catalytic oxidations using ruthenium, copper, iron, gold, cobalt and other complexes. Products and mechanistic aspects are given special emphasis throughout the book.

              Book Description

Metal-Oxygen Clusters is the first book, providing an overview of the surface chemistry and catalytic properties of heteropoly oxometalates. After a brief look at the early knowledge of heteropoly oxometalates, the book discusses the synthesis, characterization, structure, bulk properties and stability of these materials. The remainder and the largest portion of the book explores the properties of these solids as catalysts in acid-catalyzed and oxidation processes in supported or unsupported forms.
The book provides an up-to-date review of the methods for synthesizing heteropoly oxometalates of Keggin structure, techniques from spectroscopic through electrochemical to elemental analysis for their characterization and the current information on their structure, bulk properties and their stabilities at high temperatures and under acid and alkaline conditions. The book discusses the materials employed as supports for the title solid and the results of the examination of the supported materials. Methods for the identification of the nature and source of the two catalytic functions, the acidic and oxidative properties, of the heteropoly oxometalates are reviewed and discussed. The use of both the supported and unsupported heteropoly oxometalates as catalysts in acidity-requisite processes ranging from methanol conversion to hydrocarbons to ring-expansion and contraction processes and in oxidation processes from methane cyclohexane are described and related to the aforementioned properties.

                      Book Description

The design and analysis of geometric algorithms has seen remarkable growth in recent years, due to their application in computer vision, graphics, medical imaging, and CAD. Geometric algorithms are built on three pillars: geometric data structures, algorithmic data structuring techniques and results from combinatorial geometry. This comprehensive presents a coherent and systematic treatment of the foundations and gives simple, practical algorithmic solutions to problems. An accessible approach to the subject, Algorithmic Geometry is an ideal guide for instructors or for beginning graduate courses in computational geometry.

                      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A great graduate book to complement the textbooks!.......2000-03-11

If you've read computational geometry textbooks (like the Preparata-Shamos, or the recent and great "Dutch" book by de Berg et al.), and liked the material, here's your chance to delve into the more mathematical and analytical aspect of the topic. This book is not for an undergraduate class, but its thorough yet readable treatment of arrangements or Voronoi diagrams will bring you up to speed for reading technical articles or more elaborate references (like Edelsbrunner's monograph). The scope is wider than Edelsbrunner's, even though fewer or less technical results appear. For instance, there is an analysis of the complexity of the union of triangles in space (based on recent research results).

The book takes the viewpoint of randomized algorithms, which are very simple to describe and implement, and provides general tools for their analysis (on-line or off-line dynamic algorithm). It is based in five parts around geometric structures (polytopes, arrangements, Voronoi diagrams) with two introductory parts (algorithms, randomized analysis -- general theorems).

Many of the algorithms and problems stem from robotics and motion planning. There are many exercises, with either an "algorithmic" interface, or a concrete problem-solving presentation.

                          Book Description

This book presents in detail a complete set of best-fit algorithms for general curves and surfaces in space. Such best-fit algorithms approximate and estimate curve and surface parameters by minimizing the shortest distances between the curve or surface and the measurement point.

After reviewing the basics for representing curves and surfaces in space and fitting in general, the author presents three algorithms for orthogonal distance fitting combining numerical methods and minimizational methods. These algorithms are applied to implicit and parametric curves and surfaces in 2D and 3D space possessing a broad variety of algorithmic features. Finally, an appendix provides practical information for applying the general orthogonal distance fitting algorithms to fit special model features.

Obvious application areas of the algorithms presented are robot navigation, including the navigation of autonomous vehicles or the grasping of work pieces, as well as factory digitization in general.

                                    Book Description

This book contains 22 lectures presented at the final conference of the German research program "Algorithmic Number Theory and Algebra 1991-1997", sponsored by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft. The purpose of this research program and the meeting was to bring together developers of computer algebra software and researchers using computational methods to gain insight into experimental problems and theoretical questions in algebra and number theory. The book gives an overview on algorithmic methods and results obtained during this period mainly in algebraic number theory, commutative algebra and algebraic geometry, and group and representation theory. Some of the articles illustrate the current state of the computer algebra systems developed with support from the research program, for example KANT and LiDIA for algebraic number theory, SINGULAR, REDLOG and INVAR for commutative algebra and invariant theory respectively, and GAP, SYSYPHOS and CHEVIE for group and representation theory.

                                      Book Description

This monograph presents a comprehensive coverage of three-dimensional topology, as well as exploring some of its frontiers. Many important applied problems of mechanics and theoretical physics can be reduced to algorithmic problems of three-dimensional topology, which can then be solved using computers. Although much progress in this field has been made in recent years, these results have not been readily accessible to a wider audience up to now. This book is based on courses the authors have given over several years, and summarises the most outstanding achievements of modern computer topology.
Audience: This book will be of interest to graduate students and researchers whose work involves such diverse disciplines as physics, mathematics, computer programmes for spline theory and its applications, geometrical modelling, geometry, and topology. The illustrations by A.T. Fomenko, drawn especially for this work, add great value and extra appeal.

                                        Book Description

Algorithmic and quantitative aspects in real algebraic geometry are becoming increasingly important areas of research because of their roles in other areas of mathematics and computer science. The papers in this volume collectively span several different areas of current research.

The articles are based on talks given at the DIMACS Workshop on "Algorithmic and Quantitative Aspects of Real Algebraic Geometry". Topics include deciding basic algebraic properties of real semi-algebraic sets, application of quantitative results in real algebraic geometry towards investigating the computational complexity of various problems, algorithmic and quantitative questions in real enumerative geometry, new approaches towards solving decision problems in semi-algebraic geometry, as well as computing algebraic certificates, and applications of real algebraic geometry to concrete problems arising in robotics and computer graphics. The book is intended for researchers interested in computational methods in algebra.
