Size really does matter.......2005-02-24

Unfortunately, in recent years there has been an outbreak of mini-publications on Architecture. I have had the misfortune of buying several of them, including this one. This books measures 4x6 inches and is over an inch thick.

While filled with tantalizing pictures of recent Sydney residential projects, it leaves you disappointed because the images are just too small. The floor plans, elevations and sections, when provided, are hardly legible to serious Architectural review or analysis.

In keeping with the miniscule format they have provided a very brief one or two paragraph description of the project which at best introduces you to the project, but leaves you wanting to read more about the site, design, materials, etc.

Everytime I see a picture of this building it never ceases to take my breath away: just a spectacular building. This book is fascinating, I really had no idea all the controversy involved in building this building, it just seems so perfect for its harbor perch. The images in this book are wonderful and the text is very interesting and easy to follow. I find it amazing that the architect has never actually seen his masterpiece, how does that happen? The design is brilliant and totally original. Every city wants an icon and Sydney is lucky enough to have two, this building and the Sydney Harbor Bridge, and though each building is totally different in style, they are perfect foils for each other and they make the Sydney Harbor one of the most beautiful places on earth. Wonderful book on a spectacular building.

What an excellent book! Simple things come to life. Ideas you wouldn't think about. It definitely serves as an excellent innerway to creativity, as well as a catalyst for further expansion. This is a great piece of work. I love the pictures, and the entire format of the book. I'm waiting for the second edition. Why Bother Why not II?

Great Book for a Great Building.......2007-08-14

Seeing the magnificent Sydney Opera House a few years back nearly brought me to tears; it's such an magnificent building. After that I got very interested in the saga of the building's design and construction, including the resignation of architect Jorn Utzon years before the project was finished.

The building is a marvel of architecture and engineering, yet the book is quite accessible for the non-expert who wants to get an appreciation for just how extraordinary achievement the building of the Sydney Opera House was for its time.
