Book Description
People have always been fascinated with how an intended building will look. Clearly, architects' clients will have a vested interest in seeing impressions of their buildings before construction begins. However, members of the public have always expressed a desire to find out what is proposed for their town, village or city. In addition, artists' impressions have been extensively used to gain support for building projects in terms of publicity and fund raising; and as illustrations for articles about the construction industry and the history of architecture. Understanding how buildings are envisioned is central to people's view of architectural design. Artists' Impressions in Architectural Design looks at the the ways in which architects have represented their designs for clients and the public, both historically and contemporarily. It covers the period from the 15th to the 21st century. Featuring some of the best known buildings by the best known architects; this book places the exciting technological development of today in context with the rich historical heritage of the past.

Customer Reviews:
good tips for enamelling.......2007-01-19
this was a very good book for learning enamelling techniques. The book includes good pictures and advices. In Finland we have nothing like that in Finnish language so first we have to learn english and then try to translate all those ways to enamel. There are so many amazing books for jewellery workers in english and this was one of them.
First steps in Enameling.......2006-11-06
It is everything I need to know about enamaling. I found this book to be extremely helpful in buying products to start enameling. Iis has great pictures and explanations. Good projects. I learned alot from this book before I took my first class.

Jinks does it again!.......2006-04-10
This is a very good starting book to answer questions about what you need to know and have and also do to get started in enamel. This will be a reference book you will keep if you choose to continue in the craft. This book on the craft of enameling. Is up to her other works in the jewelry/metal art fields. It starts out to ground the newbie in the basics. The publisher also chimes in with the standard warnings about materials and equipment. My only warning is if you have no uncommon sense, please take up something else. She covers intro to enameling, equipment and materials and working with enamels. Moving on to seven easy type projects that you can make changes to if they do not suit you. All without loosing any of the instruction. Then moves on to some more techniques. Following up with seven more projects. Ending with a couple of pages of troubleshooting info which a lot of craft books lack. A glosssary and the resource guides.
The pictures are clear, crisp and in color. With only enough work table shown for balance. They are of a size that gives a good visual of the descriptions along with the numbers on both. The gallery pages are dispersed thru the book. With an assortment of Jinks and other artists work. I own it I am planning on keeping it.
Perfect Book For Learning Enameling.......2005-07-22
Great book, has just the amount of instructions to help you get started.
Great intro. to enameling.......2000-03-30
I have no experience with enameling at all, but wanted to know how to do it. This book was a great intro. to the process. I haven't tried it yet, but I do feel that I could at least make an attempt, based on the instructions in the book. Many instructive books leave you with too many unanswered questions, which prevents you from actually trying things yourself (especially when dangerous elements are utilized in the process, as in jewelry-making). For someone with some metal-working experience, however, I believe that you could actually get started on your own with this book.

Customer Reviews:
Enameling.......2007-03-31
The book is useful for a broad spectrum of initial enameling skills. While it doesn't delve into minute detail, enameling is a hands-on learning and application art. So I found the directions and and steps useful for my needs. I will take care of the details.
Dover reprint of good cloisonne enamel work.......2006-04-12
This is one of those books that you are giddy that Dover reprinted! it isn't for the very beginner in enameling but it will take the enameler throu all the steps for making some basic cloisonne and then the settings and chains for them. The jewelry working/metal smithing section is worth the price of admission. The chain making section is old school just enough to get people thinking about the need for all the fancy gizmo's they sell today. I enjoyed the book as a whole. the B&W pictures are good being reprints. the project dramings pictures and the wire bend diagrams are great to bad more of the newer books don't include them. The resource pages were very complete and you will find most of them still doing biz and with web sites. If you have old Thompson Enamels you have picked up from some ole timer the list with numbers will be worth the cost itself. I own it, use it
Solid beginner information.......2005-05-20
Well written with many photos and a step-by-step guide for cloisonné. Sound advice and useful trouble shooting. It touches briefly on other techniques without enough detail information to use but enough to start an interest in expanding enamels and a few trial experiments.

"Craft" being the operative word.......2007-09-06
This book is ok. It shows step-by-step how to complete many projects. I just thought the projects were pretty daggy and a bit ugly. I can see how you can learn the technique, I just wasn't very inspired. This book is more of a craft/hobby style book.
I also bought 'The Art of Enameling: Techniques, Projects, Inspiration' which I think is a fantastic book. If you are serious about making enamel jewellery I would recommend this book instead.
Enameling Instruction Made Easier.......2005-07-22
Excellent book to help you with this fine art. Will definitely recommend it to frineds and fellow artists.

Georg Jensen Jewelry (Published in Association with the Bard Graduate Center for Studies in the Decorative Arts, Design and Culture)
ASIN: 0764319914 |
Book Description
Exquisite, exciting, enameled jewelry - powdered glass fused onto metal to create gorgeous, delicate color and detail, beautiful enough to be considered art. Here is the first book to focus exclusively on enameled jewelry, an integral, important, and innovative part of American and European jewelry design at the turn of the 20th century. Attention is given to significant developments in enameling techniques and to the symbolism found in Victorian, Art Nouveau, and Arts and Crafts jewelry design during the nineteenth century and later Edwardian and Art Deco styles. Important jewelry manufacturers such as Krementz and Meyle and Mayer are included as well as more modern designers such as David Andersen and Margo de Taxco. Attention is given to the highly collectible Newark, New Jersey, and New York enamels that are often dated c. 1900. Each chapter includes values for many of the pieces illustrated. Over 450 stunning color photographs illustrate this comprehensive volume. This is an important reference for jewelry designers, historians, and collectors.
Customer Reviews:
Fun and Informative.......2006-04-08
This book was a pleasant surprise. I expected the dry recitation of facts and adequate photography of the average collector's book, but that's not what I got. The narrative is fun, with much of the primary author's personality shining through, and the photography is lovely.
The book is beautifully designed. Literary quotes about jewelry and a sense of a personal connection with the authors enhance the text. I found myself reading the entire book instead of just looking up the parts I wanted to know about. The information is thorough and detailed.
Since this is the first text on antique enamel, one would expect it to do well among collectors, but this exceeds those expectations and will be an asset to anyone in the antique business.

Customer Reviews:
easy teaching method.......2003-01-09
I really enjoyed this book on enameling. I have always wanted to get involved with this art, but I was concerned that I wouldn't understand any of the terms or processes. I found the book easy to find answers to my questions as I progressed with any steps. I have the opportunity to see many different techniques so I can make decisions on the style I want to use. Keep up the great work - I wish there were books up to this quality level in all the arts!
Read more about the book.......2003-01-08
The Art of Fine Enameling is not just for practicing enamelists, it is for the collector and art lover, too, as the book includes so many beautiful photos and easy to read descriptions of the major enamleing techniques. As a how-to book, it is for both the beginner and the more skilled enamelist and works well as a text book because of it's easy to read desciptions and it's comprehensive troubleshooting section.
You can read more about the book at
http://www.kcEnamels.com/enamel_book
which lists the Table of Contents, shows you each of the project pieces, includes some additions to the book like a list of photo references of each artist's plate in the book and more.
Review from the Enamel Guild/South Newsletter - Dec 2002.......2003-01-03
Seldom am I so impressed by a book that I feel you absolutely must have it, but I can't imagine anyone interested in enameling not having it. This hardcover book contains 160 fully packed high quality pages with 423 color plates and 13 demonstrative sketches. Twenty artists have contributed a wealth of knowledge on their own unique variations of enameling techniques. The projects are: Basse Taille created by etching with natural elements by Ingrid Regula; Champlevé by Katharine Wood; a Cloisonné Brooch created directly in the setting by Karen L. Cohen; Decals and applications of other embellishments by June Jasen; Fusion Inlay Under Enamel by Charles Lewton-Brain; Ginbari Foil Embossing by Coral Shaffer; Grisaille by D.X. Ross; an amazing 8 page mosaic Limoges project by Ora Kuller; Liquid Enamel and Glass Ball Additives by Judy Stone; Minimal Firing (2-3 firings) Enameling by Averill Shepps; Mounting large enamel installations by Marian Slepian; Plique-`a-jour Pierced-heart Pendant by Diane Almeyda; Raku-fired Bowl by Jean Tudor; Separation Enameling by Tom Ellis; Sgraffito Plate and Stenciled Tile by Sally Wright; Silk Screen for Enameling by Ute Conrad; Stone Setting Within an Enamel by Dee Fontans; Torch-altered Metal with Cheesecloth Stencil by Roxane Riva; Torch-fired Beads by Aileen Geddes; and Vessel Forms - how to successfully enamel vertical surfaces - by Sarah Perkins. Additionally, there are Photo Galleries scattered throughout the book representing another 51 of the finest enamelists, with a total of 71 represented in the book.
Each chapter is laid out beautifully and clearly: Tools, Materials, a short overview, Metalwork, Enameling, and Finishing, each in numbered steps. A highlighted box prior to the overview lists Techniques to Know with page references to instructions covered at the beginning of the book. Another lists colors needed to replicate the project as illustrated. "Notes" throughout include helpful hints such as how to avoid problems with a specific instruction, or special touches the author might add at this point. "Tips" include where to find specific tools or supplies. The 3" margin is filled with clear step-by step photos.
The book opens with a brief history and then a complete glossary of terms, techniques and tools used in the book. I thought it brilliant to place these terms first as an integral part of the book instead of an afterthought at the back. The Enamelists' Tool Kit was not just a complete list of everything you could need, but warnings and instructions on how to maintain a safe studio - also important information before jumping headfirst into a project.
The section on Enameling Application covered every possibility, including tools, with referrals to project pages, and firing, including supports, heat sources and their care. Studio Basics, Tips and Tricks included where to scavenge tools, when to high fire, and excellent photos of the four stages of firing. Cohen clarifies the 6 grades of sifting and when to use each with a fine chart. Her helpful hints throughout, such as capturing silt with coffee filters when washing enamels, are wonderful and highlighted so they are easy to spot. She continues with sections on test firing and color analysis, computer-aided designs, metal patterning, soldering/fusing, metal preparation, wirework, basic enamel applications, foil application, finishing , metal finishing, and mounting. Then she added a miscellaneous section, in case she forgot anything. There are 31 tips in these sections alone. Written by Cohen, this information is referred to in every chapter in the highlighted "Techniques to Know" boxes. The final chapter confronts 14 common enameling problems with 56 possible causes and solutions.
This book is overwhelmingly well- organized and leaves out nothing. The artists represented are amongst the best and so are their projects, which can be created in any studio. It's a treasure. It belongs in every studio and every school. Don't miss it!
