      Book Description

This established and authoritative text focuses on the design and analysis of nonlinear control systems. The author considers the latest research results and techniques in this updated and extended edition. Examples are given from mechanical, electrical and aerospace engineering. The approach consists of a rigorous mathematical formulation of control problems and respective methods of solution. The two appendices outline the most important concepts of differential geometry and present some specific findings not often found in other standard works. The book is, therefore, suitable both as a graduate and undergraduate text and as a source for reference.

      Book Description

This volume is intended for researchers in engineering and applied mathematics. It can also be used as a textbook for graduate students dealing with non-linear systems and control theory. After a self-contained treatment of the differential-geometric prerequisites, the book deals with controllability and observability properties of nonlinear systems, as well as various ways to obtain input-output representations. Problems of transforming nonlinear systems into simpler forms are discussed, including the feedback linearization problem. The disturbance and input-output decoupling problem are treated in detail, as well as some aspects of feedback stabilization, and interconnection and inversion of nonlinear systems. Emphasis is put on fundamental notions as (controlled) invariant distributions and submanifolds, together with algorithms to compute the required feedbacks. Extensions of these methods to other synthesis problems are indicated in the exercises at the end of each chapter. Special attention is paid to mechanical nonlinear control systems, and finally the theory is extended to general continuous-time and discrete time systems. Numerous examples and exercises illustrate the main results of the book.

          Book Description

This volume presents a well balanced combination of state-of-the-art theoretical results in the field of nonlinear controller and observer design, combined with industrial applications stemming from mechatronics, electrical, (bio–) chemical engineering, and fluid dynamics. The unique combination of results of finite as well as infinite–dimensional systems makes this book a remarkable contribution addressing postgraduates, researchers, and engineers both at universities and in industry. The contributions to this book were presented at the Symposium on Nonlinear Control and Observer Design: From Theory to Applications (SYNCOD), held September 15–16, 2005, at the University of Stuttgart, Germany. The conference and this book are dedicated to the 65th birthday of Prof. Dr.–Ing. Dr.h.c. Michael Zeitz to honor his life – long research and contributions on the fields of nonlinear control and observer design.

            Book Description

Nonholonomic systems are a widespread topic in several scientific and commercial domains, including robotics, locomotion and space exploration. This work sheds new light on this interdisciplinary character through the investigation of a variety of aspects coming from several disciplines. The main aim is to illustrate the idea that a better understanding of the geometric structures of mechanical systems unveils new and unknown aspects to them, and helps both analysis and design to solve standing problems and identify new challenges. In this way, separate areas of research such as Classical Mechanics, Differential Geometry, Numerical Analysis or Control Theory are brought together in this study of nonholonomic systems.

              Book Description

Technical problems often lead to differential equations with piecewise-smooth right-hand sides. Problems in mechanical engineering, for instance, violate the requirements of smoothness if they involve collisions, finite clearances, or stick-slip phenomena. Systems of this type can display a large variety of complicated bifurcation scenarios that still lack a detailed description. This book presents some of the fascinating new phenomena that one can observe in piecewise-smooth dynamical systems. The practical significance of these phenomena is demonstrated through a series of well-documented and realistic applications to switching power converters, relay systems, and different types of pulse-width modulated control systems. Other examples are derived from mechanical engineering, digital electronics, and economic business-cycle theory.

The topics considered in the book include abrupt transitions associated with modified period-doubling, saddle-node and Hopf bifurcations, the interplay between classical bifurcations and border-collision bifurcations, truncated bifurcation scenarios, period-tripling and -quadrupling bifurcations, multiple-choice bifurcations, new types of direct transitions to chaos, and torus destruction in nonsmooth systems.

In spite of its orientation towards engineering problems, the book addresses theoretical and numerical problems in sufficient detail to be of interest to nonlinear scientists in general.

                  Book Description

This book deals with the investigation of global attractors of nonlinear dynamical systems. The exposition proceeds from the simplest attractor of a single equilibrium to more complicated ones, i.e. to finite, denumerable and continuum equilibria sets; and further, to cycles, homoclinic and heteroclinic orbits; and finally, to strange attractors consisting of irregular unstable trajectories. On the complicated equilibria sets, the methods of Lyapunov stability theory are transferred. They are combined with stability techniques specially elaborated for such sets. The results are formulated as frequency-domain criteria. The methods connected with the theorems of existence of cycles and homoclinic orbits are developed. The estimates of Hausdorff dimensions of attractors are presented.

                      Book Description

The first truly up-to-date look at the theory and capabilities of nonlinear dynamical systems that take the form of feedforward neural network structures
Considered one of the most important types of structures in the study of neural networks and neural-like networks, feedforward networks incorporating dynamical elements have important properties and are of use in many applications. Specializing in experiential knowledge, a neural network stores and expands its knowledge base via strikingly human routes-through a learning process and information storage involving interconnection strengths known as synaptic weights.
In Nonlinear Dynamical Systems: Feedforward Neural Network Perspectives, six leading authorities describe recent contributions to the development of an analytical basis for the understanding and use of nonlinear dynamical systems of the feedforward type, especially in the areas of control, signal processing, and time series analysis. Moving from an introductory discussion of the different aspects of feedforward neural networks, the book then addresses:
                      * Classification problems and the related problem of approximating dynamic nonlinear input-output maps
                      * The development of robust controllers and filters
                      * The capability of neural networks to approximate functions and dynamic systems with respect to risk-sensitive error
                      * Segmenting a time series
It then sheds light on the application of feedforward neural networks to speech processing, summarizing speech-related techniques, and reviewing feedforward neural networks from the viewpoint of fundamental design issues. An up-to-date and authoritative look at the ever-widening technical boundaries and influence of neural networks in dynamical systems, this volume is an indispensable resource for researchers in neural networks and a reference staple for libraries.
