    Book Description

Understanding the causes and effects of explosions is important to experts in a broad range of disciplines, including the military, industrial and environmental research, aeronautic engineering, and applied mathematics. Offering an introductory review of historic research, Shock Waves and Explosions brings analytic and computational methods to a wide audience in a clear and thorough way. Beginning with an overview of the research on combustion and gas dynamics in the 1970s and 1980s, the author brings you up to date by covering modeling techniques and asymptotic and perturbative methods and ending with a chapter on computational methods. Most of the book deals with the mathematical analysis of explosions, but computational results are also included wherever they are available. Historical perspectives are provided on the advent of nonlinear science, as well as on the mathematical study of the blast wave phenomenon, both when visualized as a point explosion and when simulated as the expansion of a high-pressure gas. This volume clearly reveals the ingenuity of the human mind to conceptualize, model, and mathematically analyze highly complicated nonlinear phenomena such as nuclear explosions. It presents a solid foundation of knowledge that encourages further research and original ideas.

This text gave me additional information along with mathmatic models for shock wave concepts and theories. I was after information on shockwave with commercial explosives, no information on topic. Only deals with ideal gas concepts. Should read shock wave physics text first.

5 out of 5 stars very nice conceptual overview.......2006-07-22

Wow, people seem to be really split on this book. I had Mike Heath for numerical analysis/scientific computing and he was an excellent instructor, one of the best lecturers I've ever had. (As a consequence, I have a hard time separating the book and the class, so judge accordingly.) The book is based on his lecture notes, though he added some material and didn't cover every topic in the book. Just reading the book is useful to give you an overview of the point behind different methods. The goal of the class for which this book was written is actually quite conceptual. It was to give scientists (that's me: a stats researcher who makes heavy use of numerical computation) and CS people in areas other than scientific computing a leg up. It was only a first class for people in scientific computing, the rough equivalent of intro Physics or intro Probability/Stats for people in those respective majors. However, you *won't* be prepared to "roll your own" from this book. In fact, at the beginning of the semester Heath was very careful to note that if you have the opportunity to use a library function for most numerical programming, you are nuts to roll your own. Why? Numerical algorithms are usually extremely complicated and the authors of the code often spend years developing careful expertise on them. Frequently the formulas used to elucidate a given method are NOT the ones used to implement it. You need error traps, tricks to handle ill-scaling and other special cases, etc. These are things that someone who has a one-semester, superficial understanding of a topic simply won't have. So consider the book on the goals it set: it is an overview of a field. If you want to learn more about any one topic, you have to dig deeper and consult references and other works, but this is a good place to start. For this, the book serves admirably.

1 out of 5 stars Not for the practitioner.......2005-11-17

If you are interested in Scientific computing from the viewpoint of the end user that is the guy who uses the method to solve practical engineering problems then this book is lacking.

Not enough methods in this book to constitute an introductory survey of the field. Every chapter gets heavy dose mathematical treatment, apparently Heath loves his math but for the rest of us it doesnt translate into know-how. Know how to solve equations using computational techniques. Very few derivations to back his mathematical swagger, very few examples (if any) and fewer numerical schemes to solve problems. Many of the chapters receive cursory treatment such as PDE's get about 70 pages of print. Far too little to do anyone any good.

He does talk about interesting issues such as conditioning and error analysis and computer precision and memory issues but it is done from such a superficial viewpoint that one cannot use anything to improve ones code. Not recommended if you want to learn numerical methods even if you have an excellent professor to learn from. His chapter on FFT's was even more abstruse and there was hardly any methods with which to solve PDE's.

I had this for a graduate course in Numerical Methods but ended up using Hoffman's excellent book on Numerical Methods.

    1 out of 5 stars Trash.......2005-10-14

If you want to have a solid understanding of numerical computation, this book is definitely the last choice. Many theorems are given without any proof or even intuitions behind them in this book. Even when a proof is provided, it's often far from rigorous. The organization of chapters is the worst I have ever seen, revelant materials are scattered over several different locations rather than put together. Take the SVD for example, it is mentioned in the end of chapter 3, but reappears in chapter 4, which is very confusing. If you are new to this area, please don't read this book. It gives you many many facts without explanations, which I think is not a good way to learn new things. David S. Watkins' Fundamentals of Matrix Computations is a lot better and easier to understand. It also emcompasses many detailed treatments of various theorems. If you have bought Heath's book, don't be sad, at least it can serve as a coaster.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Introduction, Sparse on Details.......2004-11-20

While sparse on the details of many of the algorithms and theorems mentioned, as an introduction it covers a broad range of material-enough for two semesters of study. The writing is lucid, and when a proof of a theorem is given, it is easy to follow and explained in english afterward. Rationale is given for everything, which is a great benefit to a student not familiar with the nuances of sophisticated linear algebra.

    4 out of 5 stars A Good Introductory Survey.......2002-11-05

This book excels at presenting a reader with little to no knowledge in computer science and a mild mathematical background (knowledge of differential equations as a prerequisite) with the fundamental concepts regarding scientific computing. The presentation of pseudo-code algorithms helps smooth the transition from analytical (pencil and paper) thinking to numerical thinking. The algorithms are presented in a manner such tha anyone with access to dozens of possible environments can apply them, though they are by no means complete, thus requiring some thought into the processes. The material covered is 110% of what an engineer will want to know, 90% of what an applied mathematician will want to know, and 45% of what a numerical analyist will want to know. In all, a great book to begin a foray into numerical computing.

          Book Description

Despite decades of research and progress in the theory of generalized solutions to first-order nonlinear partial differential equations, a gap between the local and the global theories remains: The Cauchy characteristic method yields the local theory of classical solutions. Historically, the global theory has principally depended on the vanishing viscosity method. The authors of this volume help bridge the gap between the local and global theories by using the characteristic method as a basis for setting a theoretical framework for the study of global generalized solutions. That is, they extend the smooth solutions obtained by the characteristic method. The authors offer material previously unpublished in book form, including treatments of the life span of classical solutions, the construction of singularities of generalized solutions, new existence and uniqueness theorems on minimax solutions, differential inequalities of Haar type and their application to the uniqueness of global, semi-classical solutions, and Hopf-type explicit formulas for global solutions. These subjects yield interesting relations between purely mathematical theory and the applications of first-order nonlinear PDEs. The Characteristic Method and Its Generalizations for First-Order Nonlinear Partial Differential Equations represents a comprehensive exposition of the authors' works over the last decade. The book is self-contained and assumes only basic measure theory, topology, and ordinary differential equations as prerequisites. With its innovative approach, new results, and many applications, it will prove valuable to mathematicians, physicists, and engineers and especially interesting to researchers in nonlinear PDEs, differential inequalities, multivalued analysis, differential games, and related topics in applied analysis.

            Book Description

The primary objective of this book is to give a comprehensive exposition of results surrounding the work of the authors concerning boundary regularity of weak solutions of second-order elliptic quasilinear equations in divergence form. The structure of these equations allows coefficients in certain $L^{p}$ spaces, and thus it is known from classical results that weak solutions are locally Hölder continuous in the interior. Here it is shown that weak solutions are continuous at the boundary if and only if a Wiener-type condition is satisfied. This condition reduces to the celebrated Wiener criterion in the case of harmonic functions. The work that accompanies this analysis includes the "fine" analysis of Sobolev spaces and a development of the associated nonlinear potential theory. The term "fine" refers to a topology of $\mathbf R^{n}$ which is induced by the Wiener condition.

The book also contains a complete development of regularity of solutions of variational inequalities, including the double obstacle problem, where the obstacles are allowed to be discontinuous. The regularity of the solution is given in terms involving the Wiener-type condition and the fine topology. The case of differential operators with a differentiable structure and $\mathcal C^{1,\alpha}$ obstacles is also developed. The book concludes with a chapter devoted to the existence theory, thus providing the reader with a complete treatment of the subject ranging from regularity of weak solutions to the existence of weak solutions.

                Book Description

Dynamic programming is a powerful method for solving optimization problems, but has a number of drawbacks that limit its use to solving problems of very low dimension. To overcome these limitations, author Rein Luus suggested using it in an iterative fashion. Although this method required vast computer resources, modifications to his original scheme have made the computational procedure feasible. With iteration, dynamic programming becomes an effective optimization procedure for very high-dimensional optimal control problems and has demonstrated applicability to singular control problems. Recently, iterative dynamic programming (IDP) has been refined to handle inequality state constraints and noncontinuous functions. Iterative Dynamic Programming offers a comprehensive presentation of this powerful tool. It brings together the results of work carried out by the author and others - previously available only in scattered journal articles - along with the insight that led to its development. The author provides the necessary background, examines the effects of the parameters involved, and clearly illustrates IDP's advantages.

Considering that much of his life was spent in poverty and ill health, it is something of a miracle that in only forty-six years George Orwell managed to publish ten books and two collections of essays. Here, in four fat volumes, is the best selection of his non-fiction available, a trove of letters, essays, reviews, and journalism that is breathtaking in its scope and eclectic passions. Orwell had something to say about just about everyone and everything. His letters to such luminaries as Julian Symons, Anthony Powell, Arthur Koestler, and Cyril Connolly are poignant and personal. His essays, covering everything from "English Cooking" to "Literature and Totalitarianism," are memorable, and his books reviews (Hitler's Mein Kampf, Mumford's Herman Melville, Miller's Black Spring, Goldsmith's The Vicar of Wakefield to name just a few) are among the most lucid and intelligent ever written. From 1943 to l945, he wrote a regular column for the Tribune, a left wing weekly, entitled "As I Please." His observations about life in Britain during the war embraced everything from anti-American sentiment to the history of domestic appliances.

The late James J. Martin stated that one could learn great prose from reading George Orwell. Orwell's anthology titled IN FRONT OF YOUR NOSE is a good book to learn political insight and excellent writing. Orwell was not only knowledgeable, but he expressed some of the political tragedies and problems of the 20 th. century in this book. Readers should note this book is the fourth volume of essays of Orwell's essays literary criticism, political protest, etc.

Orwell was one of the very few who realized what a disaster W.W. II was for both Europeans and Asians. His essays on the forced repatriation of millions to the Soviet Union to miserable die in concentration camps were among the first to publicize this tragedy. Orwell's essays were blunt in stating that the only real winner from W.W. II was Big Communism especially in lieu of the rapid disintegration of the British Empire.

Orwell gave a good description of the inconsistent thinking of the British people. The British wanted total victory at any cost, and found themselves in bad economic shape. Many British complained about the immigration of Polish refugees to mine coal in Great Britain. Yet, the British public also complained (whined) about coal shortages. Orwell indicated the inconsistency of these remarks and commented that the British failed to see the logic between acts and consequences. Orwell Presented a clear picture of what was to occur with the British Empire which disintegrated rapidly after "victory" during W.W. II.

Orwell's essay on Gandhi is an interesting case study of Orwell's honest assessment of political leaders. Orwell is clear that he could not live like Gandhi, and Orwell admitted that he probably could be friends with the Hindu leader. Yet,Orwell highly praised Gandhi's courage, policy of nonviolent resistence to the British rules, and Gandhi's honesty. Orwell gave Gandhi praise for being honest and a decent man among political rogues, hypocrites, and cowards. Whether one agrees with Gandhi, he was indeed a brave, honest man. Among poltical figures these are rare traits indeed.

This reviewer disagrees with part of Orwell's criticism of James Burnham. Orwell correctly shows Burnham's errors in predicting the outcome of W.W.II. However, Orwell should have recognized Burnham's book THE MANAGERIAL REVOLUTION was a solid account that political and economic affairs were to be controlled by managers and "experts" rather than a market economy and by traditional political processes.

Orwell's anthology has interesting essays of literary criticism and correspondence. Orwell was suprisingly well versed with continental European poltical leaders and literary figures. There is an interesting letter that Orwell wrote to Arther Koestler, author of DARKNESS AT NOON,in which Orwell favorably compares this book with Orwell's own 1984.

Orwell also has some disturbing remarks regarding "allied" abuse and torture of defeated German prisoners of war. Orwell reflected that he remembered British and U.S. propaganda against the Germans before and during W.W. II. Yet, right in front of his nose, the "allies" were acting in the same beastial manner against those caught on the wrong side of the war. This was quite disturbing to Orwell, or any thoughtful person.

This reviewer has always been very impressed with Orwell's work. Any thoughtful individual who is not afraid of clear writing, honesty, and truth would enjoy Orwell. Unfortunately, the number of such people is small. As Orwell wrote one time, propaganda and lying do not decieve people. Propaganda and lying only help people who want to be deceived.

Essays and journalism and very good footnotes deal with starvation in Europe, prevention of literature, Gandhi, an attempt to form an organization which would deal with issues like expelling people from their homes, people forced back to Soviet Russia, and much more including civil liberities for anarchists.

                        Product Description

Volume IV covers the years from the publication of Animal Farm to Orwell's death: years shadowed by increaing ill-health. During this time he tried to drop much of his journalism and concentrate on writing Nineteen Eighty-Four, his last book. But in these years he produced many of his finest essays, continued his analysis of the post-war world in articles for the Tribune and other papers and wrote one of his rare straight piees of autobiography in "Such, Such Were the Joys", a description of his private school and a condemnation of such education. It is fascinating to see so many of his worries about events in the post-war world confirmed by their outcome today.
