Easier to Follow texts are available.......2006-02-23

This book is outlined more as a collection of journal articles on the various aspects of water treatment than as a solid text book style reference book. The book does not "flow" well. I had to use the book for a graduate class, but after leaving academia I now use "Water Treatment: Principles and Design, Second Edition" published by Wiley (and no, I'm not an MWH employee).

Adsorption, Ion Exchange and Catalysis is essentially a mixture of environmental science and chemical reactor engineering. More specifically, three important heterogeneous processes, namely, adsorption, ion exchange and catalysis, are analysed, from fundamental kinetics to reactor design with emphasis on their environmental applications. In Chapter 1, the subject of air and water pollution is dealt with. Data about pollutants and emission sources are given and the treatment methods are shortly presented. In Chapter 2, the very basics and historical development of adsorption, ion exchange and catalysis are presented as well as their environmental applications. Chapter 3 is devoted to heterogeneous processes and reactor analysis. All types of reactors are described in depth and reactor modelling, hydraulics and mass/heat transfer phenomena are examined for each type of reactor. Chapters 4 and 5 are dedicated to adsorption & ion exchange and catalysis, respectively. The basic principles are presented including kinetics, equilibrium, mass/heat transfer phenomena as well as the analytical solutions of the reactor models presented in Chapter 3. In the sixth chapter, the subject of scale up is approached.
The two Annexes at the end of the book contain physical properties of substances of environmental interest as well as unit conversion tables. Finally, nearly all the examples contained are based on real experimental data found in literature with environmental interest. Most of the examples consider all aspects of operation design kinetics, hydraulics and mass transfer.

Lots of Discussion but Few Measures.......2000-07-30

First, I have returned this book. I did not completely read it, but rather skimmed through and was disappointed with my findings. It is pitched at a comparatively elementary level, not the quantitative measures of benefit to a process engineer. In general the teaching presented, which appeared to be little, was inconsistent with the content implied by the title.

Today, membranes and membrane processes are used as efficient tools for the separation of liquid mixtures or gases in the chemical and biomedical industry, in water desalination and wastewater purification.

Despite the fact that various membrane processes, like reverse osmosis, are described in great detail in a number of books, processes involving ion-exchange membranes are only described in a fragmented way in scientific journals and patents; even though large industrial applications, like electrodialysis, have been around for over half a century. This book provides a comprehensive overview of ion-exchange membrane separation processes covering the fundamentals as well as recent developments of the different products and processes and their applications. The audience for this book is heterogeneous, as it includes plant managers and process engineers as well as research scientists and graduate students.

The separate chapters are based on different topics. The first chapter describes the relevant Electromembrane processes in a general overview. The second chapter explains thermodynamic and physicochemical fundamentals. The third chapter gives information about ion-exchange membrane preparation techniques, while the fourth and fifth chapter discusses the processes as unit operations giving examples for the design of specific plants.

The following quote by Albert Camus presents the human dilemma, "It is not the universe that is absurd. It is not human beings that are absurd. It is the human being living within the universe that is absurd. While the universe is random, human beings demand order: thus lies the absurdity."

Sometimes we can see through a persons writtings into the depths of their soul. The thought of power and self gratification for his efforts, didn't bring the inner peace he so sought after. For there is another adventure ahead I sense, for the author, which will bring to him the desires of his inner most being.

Muddled thinking, factual errors, terribly written........2001-12-26

The authors parrot all the obvious targets of criticism in the history of the human species, but offer no coherent suggestions for an improved society or for a better life for individuals. The factual errors are irritating--several times they talk about how Beavers use dams to catch fish and don't learn to use nets, which would be more effective. Don't they know that Beavers are vegetarians who eat the inner bark of trees, not fish? The writing style is tedious with the same stories repeated over and over and over every few pages. There is not a new idea in the book. Any reasonably well read person knows the robber barons did bad things, that some churches that preach poverty in fact accumulate wealth, that humans are driven by lust and a desire for power. Despite the reference to Machiavelli and Darwin, which seduced me into buying this book, there is no intelligent discussion of the ideas of either of them. It is easy to be a critic of humans. It is far more challenging to observe humans and life carefully enough to develop some ideas which may lead to a better society. "Justice is Conflict" by Stuart Hampshire is an excellent example of an inspirational work which can help any person to become a better person and which offers tools for any society to become a better society. If nothing else, it is an example of a book which was written with the careful crafting so painfully missing in the sad attempt by Aloysius and Gibson.

A RELATIVE MATCH.......2001-04-19

If we allow ourselves to be trapped between the jaws of our imagination and our reality -- between that better world we dream of and the worse one we inhabit -- we may find our condition a very unsatisfactory one; and one of our traditional compensations is to look down at all those 'lower' forms of life to which we suppose ourselves superior in happiness.

This book provides a mirror, a cracked mirror.

Our human world may seem cruel and brief; but in the rest of nature at least it is worse. This consolation does not bear close scrutiny, for what is revealed through the pages of "Eat or Be Eaten" then is not a universe of hazard-bestowed privilege, one in which man stands highest on the ladder of luck, but one in which -- with a single eXception -- there reigns a mysterious balance and *equality* among all the forms of animate matter. Paraphrasing Darwin, we should call this equality in eXisting **relativity of recompense**

It can be defined thus: ***Relativity of recompense is that which allows, at any stage of evolution, any sentient creature to find under normal conditions the same comparative pleasure in eXisting as all other sentient creatures of its own or any other age.*** Two factors establish this equality among all sentient forms of life, whether they be past or present, simple or compleX, with a life-span of an hour or one of decades. The first is that they are all able to feel pleasure and pain; the second is that not one of them is able to compare its own eXperience of pleasure and pain with any other creature's.

The single eXception to this happy oblivion is man. James Aloysius and friends well describe the quandary of this eXception...

A surprisingly original and thought provoking book........2001-02-16

I wasn't prepared for how profound an impact this book would have on me. While its style is VERY loose and at times frustrating, the book paints a picture of reality that is both disturbing and liberating. At its heart, the book attempts to expose and thus destroy the many invisible constraints others have placed on our lives. Eat or Be Eaten will clearly be despised by those who control others via social and/or religious precepts. For those who've played by "the rules" yet haven't experienced the joy they've been promised, this book will be a breath of fresh air. Near the end of the book is a quote by Christopher Morley that states, "There is only one success - to spend your life in your own way." Eat or Be Eaten is for those who are ready to make this happen.

A MUST READ.......2000-08-30

Those interested in sociology and pyschology theories will be very happy. The book has a fluid continuium leading us into the 21st. century and beyond. It helps you look inside yourself and in the end it makes you feel better. As you go along, reading this book, you will re-examine your life and thinking. Don't EXPECT a dry read. I got to meet the authors at a book signing, their talk about the book was riveting and the time just flew by.
