      Book Description

Interesting applications for disperse systems exist in many areas of modern technology. Weight and cost savings achieved in engineered foams for complex designs and computer-modeled optical pigments for creating astounding effects in coating are but two examples of such diverse applications. In addition to the cost and material reductions already achieved in existing applications, future applications of disperse systems are ripe with many heretofore-undeveloped products possessing unprecedented properties. A thorough understanding of the relationship between microscopic composition and the measurable macroscopic behaviour of disperse systems is necessary for technologists to exploit the unique properties of these systems. With such an understanding, the reader will be equipped to develop new products efficiently and to effectively achieve required material properties.

Professor Makoto Takeo, the renowned expert from Portland State University, addresses this need for an understanding of disperse systems in a remarkable new text. The current knowledge base is presented and the underlying principles of these systems are revealed in a straightforward and easily accessible manner. It is an indispensable work for those who want to competently enter this fascinating field, and an absolute must for tomorrow's physicists and materials scientists.

                Description:
The measurement of residence time distribution of solid particles in solid-liquid suspension is experimentally difficult. However, the twin system approach is particularly suited for the assessment of particle RTD in flow systems as it allows overcoming some of the usual difficulties generally encountered in this kind of measurement. Twin system consists of two vessels and external piping in total recycle. Experimental results from this system can be evaluated using Z-transforms to derive particle RTD for subsequent testing of alternative flow models. Recently, the axial dispersion model was applied using the ''advection diffusion equation'' (sometimes called the ''diffusion with bulk flow equation'') derived thereof, which was solved numerically. This contribution presents an analytical solution of analogous equations, which enables direct and precise evaluations of this problem.

                  Description:
A fully mechanized set-up was built for the experimental determination of bi-dimensional dispersion with high spatial resolution (2400@mm^2). Gravitational and wall effects in a single stream were evaluated by using time-based sampling and a micro-flow cell. Vertical upward and downward flows as well as horizontal flows were investigated. Ethylene glycol (MEG) and Rhodamine B in MEG were used as carrier and sample solutions, respectively. Longitudinal profiles were obtained by laser induced total fluorescence (LIF) at up to 19 transversal sites and combined to generate high-resolution bi-dimensional profiles. A two frontal maxima pattern was observed for all flows. The volumetric fraction of RB shape was highly stretched for downward flow and there was high asymmetry for horizontal flow. The sensitivity of three dispersion parameters was evaluated: maximum peak value, peak half-width at half-height, and peak area. Data modeling showed that the tanks-in-series was more sensitive to wall effects, had good adjustment with only one tank for upward and horizontal flow and needed two tanks for downward flow which was attributed to the latter having higher dispersion. A black box empirical modeling described better the gravitational effect and allowed to identify a parameter sensitive to upward and downward flow as well as hinting to two inner streams within the horizontal flow. It also pointed to a wall dispersion contribution of twice that of the liquid-liquid dispersion.

                    Description:
Liquid phase residence time distribution studies are reported in 2-phase inverse fluidized bed for the first time in the literature. Using a pulse tracer technique and deconvolution method of analysis, RTD of the system, residence time, Peclet number and dispersion coefficient are determined. The liquid phase axial dispersion coefficient increases with increase in liquid velocity and Archimedes number and is independent of static bed height. An empirical correlation has been proposed for liquid phase axial dispersion coefficient in 2-phase IFB.

5 out of 5 stars Quick and compact Matlab book.......2007-05-12

This is a very good reference. It is also very suitable for people starting in Matlab. Also the book has a very nice format, namely small and thin. In passing, I showed the book to a collegue with a Matlab question and he wanted to have a copy for himself. I can also recommend it for students.

5 out of 5 stars Great for the beginner of MATLAB.......2006-05-30

Great book at introducing MATLAB. If you are an ABSOLUTE beginner in programming with MATLAB this book is a must. It answers practically all the questions a beginner would have and shows you where to go if you need additional information.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful matlab reference.......2003-02-22

Excellent text. Contains nice, brief summaries of matlab functionality, with references on where to go to get more verbose explanations. This book is about the size of a postcard. When I need to locate or discover a new function that I'm sure matlab has somewhere, this Primer is usually more effective than the matlab on-line help. Also good for an overview of functionality, an area where Matlab's on-line help is particularly weak. Assumes no knowledge of matlab.

                      5 out of 5 stars Don't need anything else.......2000-07-03

In MATLAB, really the only thing you need is a list of commands, then you can type 'help command' and be done. Sigmon's book is just this. Good enough to carry me through undergrad to first year grad school. Next year I'll need a reference specializing in the controls toolkit, but this Primer will still be glued to my hand whenever I start Matlab. I'm buying one for each of my students.

                      3 out of 5 stars Quick "primer".......2000-03-19

This is a quick reference book (VERY small and thin)for matlab commands. Has come in handy in getting a quick fix to some problems/equations. BUT you have to know what you are looking for already.

                      Book Description

Because of the wide use of adaptive filtering in digital signal processing and, because most of the modern electronic devices include some type of an adaptive filter, a text that brings forth the fundamentals of this field was necessary. The material and the principles presented in this book are easily accessible to engineers, scientists, and students who would like to learn the fundamentals of this field and have a background at the bachelor level. Adaptive Filtering Primer with MATLAB® clearly explains the fundamentals of adaptive filtering supported by numerous examples and computer simulations. The authors introduce discrete-time signal processing, random variables and stochastic processes, the Wiener filter, properties of the error surface, the steepest descent method, and the least mean square (LMS) algorithm. They also supply many MATLAB® functions and m-files along with computer experiments to illustrate how to apply the concepts to real-world problems. The book includes problems along with hints, suggestions, and solutions for solving them. An appendix on matrix computations completes the self-contained coverage. With applications across a wide range of areas, including radar, communications, control, medical instrumentation, and seismology, Adaptive Filtering Primer with MATLAB® is an ideal companion for quick reference and a perfect, concise introduction to the field.

5 out of 5 stars Good book, worth buying.......2007-09-12

This is a thin little book, usually, thinner is better, in my opinion, because the author explained the bare bone of adaptive filter theory and application in a concise way in stead of using pages and pages of words to confuse people, and to waste precious forest resource. I like it, and would recommend it to people who has some adaptive filter backgound, and who wants to fresh their memory.

                        Book Description

Signals and Systems Primer with MATLAB® equally emphasizes the fundamentals of both analog and digital signals and systems. To ensure insight into the basic concepts and methods, the text presents a variety of examples that illustrate a wide range of applications, from microelectromechanical to worldwide communication systems. It also provides MATLAB functions and procedures for practice and verification of these concepts. Taking a pedagogical approach, the author builds a solid foundation in signal processing as well as analog and digital systems. The book first introduces orthogonal signals, linear and time-invariant continuous-time systems, discrete-type systems, periodic signals represented by Fourier series, Gibbs's phenomenon, and the sampling theorem. After chapters on various transforms, the book discusses analog filter design, both finite and infinite impulse response digital filters, and the fundamentals of random digital signal processing, including the nonparametric spectral estimation. The final chapter presents different types of filtering and their uses for random digital signal processing, specifically, the use of Wiener filtering and least mean squares filtering. Balancing the study of signals with system modeling and interactions, this text will help readers accurately develop mathematical representations of systems.

                          Book Description

The term "photomechanics" describes a suite of experimental techniques which use optics (photo) for studying problems in mechanics. The field has been in existence for some time, but has always lagged behind other experimental and numerical techniques. The main reason for this is that the interpretation of data, which whilst providing whole-field visualization, is not in a form readily amenable to the end-user. Digital image processing has become common within the photomechanics community. However, one approach does not fit all, and subtle variations in technique and method have been developed by different groups working on specific applications.

This primer enables the user to get started with their experimental analysis quickly. It is based on the universally popular MATLAB® software, which includes dedicated and optimized functions for a variety of image processing tasks. These can readily scripted, along with the necessary mathematical expressions, for particular experimental techniques. The book provides an introduction to some of the optical techniques, and then introduces MATLAB® routines specific to the image processing in experimental mechanics. There are also case studies on particular techniques.

As part of the book, a collection of M-files is provided on CD-ROM, which also contains example images and test code. This provides a starting point for the user, who can then easily add or edit statements or function for their own images.
