This book is a comprehensive treatment of the fundamentals of dislocations. Sufficient detail is provided to make the book useful as a underrate text, and extends the treatment of specific problems to stimulate the advanced graduate student. The book covers the elastic theory of straight and curved dislocations, including a chapter on elastic anisotropy. Applications to the theory of dislocation motion at low and high temperatures are presented. Finally, groups of dislocations, grain boundaries, pileups, barriers, and twins are considered.

One of the classic texts on "The Concept of a Dislocation".......2000-07-31
This classic text is a complete treatise on the concept of dislocations and their interactions with various other defects in crystalline materials. The dislocation concept is built up using basic theory of linear elasticity (Part 1 of the text). Hence, this book is ideal for someone with an elaborate background in Mechanics/Elasticity and looking to extend their backgroud in Crystal Plasticity from a Materials Science perspective. Parts 2-4 of the book will be of particular interest, as they deal with substantial Materials Science issues important at the atomic/meso-scale level.
For a Materials Scientist, while Part I might prove to be a challenge, as the references might not be as helpful as one might like (the authors do confess to not being exhaustive in their literature survey), Part 2-4 would be particularly useful in developing a basic intuition in the various dislocation-based phenomena important for understanding the various structure-property relationships that exist in crystalline materials.

During the last century, a change took place in the way people in Western societies understood themselves--the way they understood the self and how it came into being. Steedman tracks this development through changing attitudes about children and childhood as these appear in literature and law, medicine, science, and social history. Moving from the world of German fiction to that of child acrobats and street arabs in nineteenth-century Britain, from the theories of Freud to those of Foucault, she shows how the individual and personal history that a child embodied came to represent human "insideness." Particularly important for understanding this change is the part that Freudian psychoanalysis played, between 1900 and 1920, in summarizing and reformulating the Victorian idea that the core of an individual's psychic identity was his or her own lost past, or childhood.
Using the perspectives of social and cultural history, and the history of psychology and physiology, Strange Dislocations traces a search for the self, for a past that is lost and gone, and the ways in which, over the last hundred years, the lost vision has come to assume the form of a child.

The author applies methods of nonlinear elasticity to investigate the defects in the crystal structure of solids such as dislocations and disclinations that characterize the plastic and strength properties of many materials. Contrary to the geometrically motivated nonlinear theory of dislocations continuously distributed over the body, nonlinear analysis of isolated dislocations and disclinations is less developed; it is given for the first time in this book, and in a form accessible to both students and researchers. The general theory of Volterra's dislocations in elastic media under large deformations is developed. A number of exact solutions are found. The nonlinear approach to investigating the isolated defects produces results that often differ qualitatively from those of the linear theory.

The great thing about this book is that it while it is a rigorous work of political and social philosophy it reaches a wider audience than the academy. It discusses a range of thinkers, from nineteenth century Russian anarchists like Bakunin and Kropotkin to contemporary postsructuralists like Foucault, Deleuze and Lacan, finding a common thread of anti-authoritarianism, and using these insights to deconstruct ideas about power, subjectivity and radical political action in the wake of the failure of Marxist revolutionary projects.
Anarchism and Poststructuralism.......2002-08-28
I thought this book was great. It deals with issues of power, subjectivity and political identity through a comparative analysis of anarchist and poststructuralist political philosophy. It is one of the few substantial works of political theory to take this comparison seriously and draws out startling parallels between thinkers like Bakunin, Foucault, Stirner and Derrida. Unlike a lot of texts in philosophy and politics it is clearly written and well argued, and would transcends the narrow academic focus. It would be approachable for anyone interested in the subject of radical politics today.

If you are a Mechanical, Materials, or Industrial Engineer, you will need this book somewhere down the road. I am currently in graduate studies, and virtually every professor in those three faculties has a well used copy. It is well written and very complete. I shopped around looking for a used copy, but most of them are used so often they're almost worn out.

Good Undergraduate metallurgy books are hard to find, this one's an essential for any forging class and any metallurgist's bookshelf.
Thorough and comprehensive.......2006-01-01
Metallurgy is one of the oldest established branches of materials science, and science in general. Yet many of the underlying principles, such as dislocation theory and plasticity, have only been explored within the last 100 years or so. As such, there is a wealth of information in metallurgy that one could learn. This book by G. Dieter is one of the better books to use to learn about metallurgy. Coming in at 800 pages even, this book is a thorough study of the principles behind mechanical metallurgy and is appropriate for both students in the field and practicing engineers. The book provides complete mathematical treatments of numerous subjects within mechanical metallurgy, including crystallography of defects, thermodynamics of plastic flow, kinetics, etc... The book is somewhat old-fashioned in that it leaves out more modern topics such as the use of computer simulations in metallurgy. Because of this, the book does not deserve 5 stars. But due to its breadth and coverage of other topics, it deserves 4 out of 5 stars.

The Bible of material science.......2000-10-12
This book covers the entire scope of mechanical behavior in a single volume! How Dieter accomplished his, I can't imagine. But he did.
He covers everything, from the fundamentals of strees and strain, through dislocation theory, basic deformation and fracture, and the whole scope of metal-forming operations. If you need it, it's in this book.
Two complaints:
1) There is relatively little coverage of computer modeling, FEM, etc. These are the future of engineering, and Dieter needs to get on the boat when (if) he writes a fourth edition.
2) The index is USELESS.
These two faults don't change the fact that this is one of he most important single books ever written in the field of material science.

Parasitology books are traditionally compendia of the bizarre and macabre-page after page of sinister pathogens infecting obscure hosts and undergoing complex metamorphoses via stages with esoteric names. Combes's book is appropriately replete with these details, covering a wealth of natural history, anatomy, life history and behaviour. What sets this book apart is the way in which this information is presented. Rather than merely catalogued, host-parasite interactions are used to illustrate broad ecological, evolutionary and philosophical discussions. After each chapter, one comes away both with a detailed knowledge of current parasitological research, but also with a deeper and broader grasp of fundamental conceptual issues in the biological sciences generally.
Rather than restricting himself to the usual suspects-nematodes, flukes, trematodes and tapeworms-the reader is presented with an unprecedented breadth of examples. This book is the first parasitology text that considers mitochondria, mycorrhizae and mistletoes; cuckoos, cyanobacteria and chromosomes as worthy examplars of parasitism. Many biologists will be startled to find their study organisms included in a parasitological treatise, and Combes is to be credited for working from such a broad literature base. This breadth makes the emergent generalities and widely supported patterns all the more remarkable. A pertinent example is this passing comment: "this is why we know of no parasite (at least among the multicellular species) that has evolved to become free-living, even if such a passage appears to be theoretically possible", p 34; pointing out that the route to parasitism is necessarily a one-way street.
In addition to novel examples, many case studies are well known-leaf cutting ants and their fungus gardens, Madagascan orchids and their moth pollinators, ungulates and their blood-borne trypanosomes. By incorporating recent findings and drawing comparisons with analogous systems, Combes presents many of these "text-book examples" in a new light, often revealing these interactions to be more convoluted than first thought. Hence, in the review of cuckoos and other nest parasites, we learn that cuckoos do not pick up ectoparasites from their adoptive parents-it is only when they mate in their second year that they acquire lice and mites from conspecifics. Hence, the very act of being a parasite confers a cuckoo immunity to parasitism until maturity. Even the footnotes are replete with parasitological gems: reminding us that the reason prized Woodcock are best consumed whole is to ensure the flavour of "millions of small tapeworms in the genus Amoebotaenia" residing in their intestines infuse the meat during cooking.
A persistent theme throughout the book relates to the two filters or diaphragms defining the evolution of host-parasite systems: the encounter filter and the compatibility filter. Originally introduced in his 1995 book, this theme is well integrated and makes a significant contribution to the conceptual basis of understanding host-parasite interactions. There is a thoughtful clarification of the distinction between virulence and pathogenicity, an excellent précis of the Red Queen Hypothesis and a succinct summary of adaptationism, although he perpetuates the misuse of the term spandrel (c.f. pendentive, after Houston 1990). Closer to home, Combes discusses why humans play host to more parasites than any other species and, far from being merely a sampling artefact, elucidates the many facets of human history, behaviour, distribution and lifestyle that pre-dispose us to infection. This has dramatic consequences for human health and, more surprisingly, the health of our domestic animals. Taenia saginata and T. solium (the beef and pork tapeworms respectively) were both human parasites first, passed horizontally to these animals soon after domestication.
The writing style is accessible, lucid and surprisingly engaging, using occasional anecdotes and asides to punctuate the text. Originally published in French, Daniel Simberloff translated the book into English, and his voice is almost imperceptible-the hallmark of a skilled translator (although I doubt Voltaire would have approved of his satire "Candide" being referred to as a pamphlet!). The French character of the book is still retained-the text is replete with idioms and analogies familiar to francophones. More importantly, Combes cites the French parasitological literature extensively, revealing a wealth of hitherto under-appreciated literature to monolingual researchers.
While I was pleased at the inclusion of a glossary, it was all too brief (four pages) and many terms defined in the text were not included, including the subtle differences between endoparasites and mesoparasites, and the distinction between allomones and kairomones. The book is well illustrated with half-tone diagrams, flow-charts and graphs, all of a consistently high standard, and index is comprehensive.
While the engaging style and uncluttered language make this book accessible to a general audience, this book is aimed squarely at non-parasitologist professional biologists, emphatically underscoring the relevance of parasitology to evolutionary biology and the life sciences generally. Combes demonstrates that there are few, if any clear-cut distinctions between predation, parasitism, commensalism, and mutualism. Rather, they are presented as a continuum, challenging current typological approaches to their study. Any biologist interested in interspecific interactions of any kind should read this book-it will change their view of what is (and isn't) a parasite, broaden their taxonomic horizons and remind them that there is a wealth of primary scientific literature written in other languages awaiting the adventurous explorer.
