    Book Description

This volume presents the results of a major international and interdisciplinary study of the mechanisms and consequences of surface water acidification, which is a growing environmental concern. This detailed, long-term study provides an authoritative overview of the chemical process involved in acidification and, in particular, of its biological impact on freshwater life. The Surface Waters Acidification Programme (SWAP) has drawn together for the first time the many facets of this complex phenomenon: the volume includes sections on hydrochemical studies in catchments, catchment process studies, catchment manipulation experiments, chemical processes, paleolimnological studies, biological effects on freshwater life, and modeling studies. The volume finishes with an assessment of SWAP and its conclusions. The results are applicable to all those areas suffering the consequences of acidification, especially in the Northern Temperate Zone. Published on behalf of the Royal Society.

    Book Description

This ground-breaking and provocative book presents new and astonishing interpretations of ancient history, mythology and world religions that will call many established beliefs into question. In Gateway of the Gods, author Craig Hines invites readers to reconsider preconceived notions concerning Biblical theology in light of recent scientific discoveries and inquiries concerning the nature of the universe. This fascinating exploration reveals a number of ideas that have been suppressed and obscured behind layers of symbolism and misguided propaganda for thousands of years... until now. Why is it that so many world cultures share details of an event when fallen angels descended upon the earth and fathered hybrid offspring called the Nephilim? Is it possible that these beings used "gateway" technology housed within pyramids and holy temples to travel between the heavenly and earthly realms? Do the latest advances in theoretical physics lend credibility to the idea that otherworldly beings might reside in dimensions parallel to our own? Do the recorded voices of the "dead," known as Electronic Voice Phenomena (EVP), indicate that we may be able to communicate with these other realms? Was a secret message embedded within ancient texts that could only be revealed after we have attained the knowledge and technology necessary to understand it? Does this message offer a solution to the approaching environmental disaster that scientists warn will be more devastating to human civilization than any others in recorded history? Drawing from a variety of historical sources and years of meticulous research, the author weaves together a compelling argument involving a range of seemingly disparate topics that when considered together, formulate a radically new narrative concerning the history and destiny of the human race.

This is a well written, informative book. It will really get you to consider all possibilites in regards to our future. I very good read.

4 out of 5 stars Gateway To The Pondering Mind.......2007-07-17

If this book is about 'gateways', one of the passages has to be into the realm of thought. Thinking is definitely challenged in this multi-faceted work, and the author is to be admired for what had to be arduous dedication, to his task. It's most assuredly not a book for one who is satisfied having their beliefs and understanding resting comfortably in a box.

The author is honest to the point of almost being apolgetic for suggesting theory over proven fact. For offering possibilities rather than absolutes. I would have been a bit happier had he allowed himself exit from this redundant humility. I'd say extrapolate with gusto, Mr. Hines. Your devotion to this project gives you that right. Your careful attention to detail and fairness in presenting various sides to these unanswerable questions, lends credence to your theory in and of itself.

Whether every Spiritual premise you suggest rings true to everyone who ponders them or not, you are to be commended for 'ringing' the bell. As for the verbal wake up call on the Coming Storm, I'd say you nailed that one way beyond theory.

Gateways of the Gods is a book for anyone who wants to explore outside of 'forced' dogma and the doctrinal limits regarding the questions that Man first asked with etchings on cave walls.

5 out of 5 stars A Fascinating Search for Explanation of Ancient (and Modern) Mysteries.......2007-07-17

Craig Hines has taken on the formidable task of finding common meaning and connections between and among many ancient texts and artifacts, from many civilizations, all pointing to the possibility that Mankind has been visited by beings from another dimension or universe in the past---and may be visited again . . . or we may find the way to visit them. He has collected in one book a remarkable mass of information and detail, showing similarities in myths, construction of holy buildings (pyramids in Egypt and in the New World; Ziggurats in other cultures)and in language, even to similar words from vastly different languages. This is not a "fast read," but instead is a book which rewards the careful reader, who will likely want to come back to re-read many passages---and may be motivated to join the search for meaning in this ancient and modern knoweldge.

5 out of 5 stars Gateway of the Gods: A "Must Have" for your Library .......2007-07-16

Gateway of the Gods is one of the most delightfully surprising works that I have ever read which speaks to earthly/human wonderings and spiritual ponderings. It is both well researched and well written, and the Summary at the end of each chapter is extremely helpful.

Whether you are a `fledgling' along your path of light or have traveled quite a distance, you will find that Gateway offers richness on many levels. It filled in a lot of the blanks in my `crossword puzzle of knowledge' that I have been working on throughout my 61 earth years. The author's ability to be non-threatening with new ideas and simply ask, "What if there is another meaning..." pulled me along, and I couldn't put the book down.

Granted, some of the ideas are beyond my scope of knowledge and understanding right now, but isn't that why we read?

After reading Gateway of the Gods

    · both the Bible and the Book of Enoch now have an enhanced light;
    · Venus (the Evening Star) will never look the same to me again (even though I have to admit that I still make a wish!); and
    · The chapter called "The Gateways of the Gods" was breath taking;
o That chapter was (to me) worth the entire price of the book.

There is no way for me to even begin to describe the wealth of information and new ideas in Gateway of the Gods. You need to read it.

    HOWEVER, the real `Hook' for you to buy the book is;

    · You would never have stumbled onto it (as I did) if you weren't poking around trying to find so-called `hidden/forbidden' truth!! Now admit it!

I had been searching the Internet for fallen angels; Nephilim; giant race after the flood; Watchers; and then, thankfully, Gateway of the Gods popped up.

(You know: When a student is ready, a teacher (in the form of a book this time) appears!) It was money well spent.

Just one question, Mr. Author: Is wine REALLY the nectar of the gods? Please say `Yes'!!

4 out of 5 stars New Answers to Old Questioins.......2007-07-04

Craig Hines, author of GATEWAY OF THE GODS, has obviously done an enormous amount of research in an astoundingly wide variety of fields. Theology, Egyptology, angelology, ancient religious texts, the mystical significance of numbers, String Theory, electronic voice phenomena, the Greek and Hebrew languages, American politics, and global warming, to name a few. Somehow, Hines blends them all together, perhaps for the first time, to arrive at a new and challenging view of some of the world's oldest and most troublesome questions. Where did mankind come from? Why is he here on earth? What is the purpose of his life. And what lies ahead in his future?

Despite the breadth and depth of his subject matter, Hines weaves it all together in an organized, cohesive and well-written way. If you enjoy looking at Life through a set of new lenses, and don't mind plowing through a thicket of theories, GATEWAY OF THE GODS is a good way to spend a rainy (or even a sunny) weekend.

    For the text version :-

Looking at the publisher, you might be suprised by a book with a title like this, but it does fit for them and is not a romance type story.

The book opens with a man witnessing the execution of Joan of Arc, and the splintering of her sword, and he is helpless to do anything about either.

Shift to the present, and we begin to follow the exploits of Anja Creed, a junior tomb raider. A tall, good looking (of course) archaeologist that works for a cable tv show called Chasing History's Monsters. She is in France looking into a local French werewolf legend, when suddenly she is hunted.

Mysterious monks, immortal sword chasers, drug-addled 'Wild Hunt shapeshifters' and more are to be found as she jetsets around the world. Needless to say, she finds Joan's sword, and this means people are more interested in her. It also appears to give her enhanced physical abilities, and she can make it vanish at will.

An action packed ending, not a bad start to the series.

For the Graphic Audio version :-

This is something I didn't expect either. Out of the blue, Graphic Audio emailed me and asked if I would like to listen to their production of the first Rogue Angel book, given I had written about it earlier. Seeing I liked the novel, I said sure, why not.

They are here, for people that are interested Graphic Audio - Rogue Angel : Destiny Their email said you can get audio cd, mp3 cd or download, so that should pretty much cover anyone. Mp3 download perhaps is a good idea too for those that don't do the windows media thing, but I suppose you can always get a cd instead. It would be a useful option for overseas readers, certainly.

Generally speaking, I am not one for audiobooks, as, for me, to listen to an audiobook will take several times longer than reading the novel of the same length. On occasion while working or on a long car trip I have done so.

I have listened to many more radio presentations, or old time radio episodes like The Shadow, or Tarzan, or the Lone Ranger, Green Hornet, or Superman. I much prefer those if I am going to listen to something, as they have acting and the whole thing in there. Some radio shows from the 1980s, and a Sherlock Holmes vs Dracula production that was also pretty much the same as the book, but not as fancy as this.

However, it appears what Graphic audio is doing is a combination. There is a narrator that is basically reading the parts of the book that is not dialogue. In this case it is a woman, which makes sense, as the hero of the piece in this case is female. However, all the dialogue is played by different actors of the appropriate gender. Also, there is a soundtrack, and sound effects. Gunshots, cars, thwackings, and a really cool noise when Annja does the disappear and reappear the mystical sword trick, which is excellent. The mobile phone noises were realistic enough to annoy my wife.

So, this is a hybrid production that is pretty much the full book, which all the added benefits an audio production can bring to enliven the experience. The tagline on the website says 'A Movie In Your Mind', for their books/productions in general. It seems they are not far wrong, as that is the production they are going for.

It all appears to be done quite well. The narrator/actress in effect is playing the straight woman (in a comedic sense), while the male character dialogue flows around her, as she tolerates them to greater or lesser degrees.

The Rogue Angel concept I think is a good one, and designed for crossover appeal. I am guessing that Annja is going to run into a love interest or two to appeal a bit more to romance fans, and there is also the female superhero arse kicker, for fans there, and a bit of the running around with guns for fans of that sort of action. Throw in some monsters and ghostbusting, and a magic sword, and you certainly have an interesting combination. Elements of Witchblade, Highlander, Tomb Raider and/or Relic Hunter, but featuring a character who is a little younger than that crowd.

If you like audio drama, I don't see why this wouldn't appeal, and if you like audio books (or old time radio dramas, or radio drama), there is a lot of that there, as well, which seems to me to be somewhat clever, but this is an area I am not particularly familiar with.

The actual content is pretty much the same, so that rating doesn't change, after a second run through. If I was tempted to change it, it would probably go slightly higher I think, after the repeat. However, I may be new to this sort of thing. This may mean it impresses me more than a highly experienced listener to books and drama I will give the production itself :

This is the first in a long time that I could not put down. I found it fast paced and character driven. Annja Creed is a great character and I cant wait to read more on her and her story. The stroy just flowes and dose not lose you in pointless fillers. All in all a great start to what I hope will be a great series.

5 out of 5 stars great first book in a great series.......2007-03-15

I'm not going to rehash the plot premise, everyone else has done that. Intense, thought provoking, social diatribe this isn't. It's a nice light read that is akin to a more modern day indiana jones meets murder mystery adventure with a little superpower type flare thrown in for originality. The writing is smooth, flows very well, graphic descriptions and well designed scenes and settings make this easily imagined and plays movie-like in the mind as it's being read. Annja is interesting and sardonic as the heroine, which makes her encounters quite amusing and grounded. I'm several books into this series, and highly recommend any of them so far. I would start with this one, though, as it gives a lot of good background information that helps understanding in future story arcs (but not necessary, you could follow along no matter what book you read first)

4 out of 5 stars reads like a video game.......2007-01-10

The first portion of this book is all run, rush, chase, fight and the reader isn't sure just why into much further into the story. Basically, Annja Creed is a serious archeologist with a mysterious background (orphan raised by nuns) and a TV- gig reminiscent of In Search Of mixed with Fear by MTV that helps her to fund her serious work. While hunting down a mysterious serial killer/monster that plagued the French countryside hundreds of years before, Annja finds herself mixed up in a tale that reminds me a bit of Christophe Gans' Brotherhood of the Wolf (2002). It also involves Joan or Arc, some odd monks, 2 probable immortals, some gangster-like criminals and the truth behind the beast Annja seeks. I just wish that more time was spent on the support plots and a little less time was spent playing cat and mouse. It is also a very quick read. Don't expect to have to think a lot to enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars Great story line.......2007-01-09

I started the series with book three. Liked it so well I had to work backward to the beginning. Not the way you want to go, but still great reading.

    Book Description

Arguably no other author has inspired more musicians than has Howard Phillips Lovecraft. Here, for the first time, is a book documenting the music inspired by the works of this literary genius, with insights provided by the artists. The book features a foreword by H. P. Lovecraft expert S. T. Joshi and cover artwork by Joseph Vargo.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Excellent for Lovecraft or music lovers alike.......2006-10-28

The Strange Sound of Cthulhu starts with an introduction to Lovecraft's life. This provides good background for readers who are there for the musical aspect and unfamiliar with his writing. It is strait-forward, giving just the information needed to understand how he could still have an impact on music today, almost seventy years after his death.

The rest of the book is broken down into the musical genres he inspired. From psychedelic rock to country, groups little heard of all the way to big names, such as Black Sabbath and Metallica, have attributed some of their inspiration to Lovecraft.

Hill analyzes the songs--and even group names--that have roots in the literature of Lovecraft. The book compares lyrics with Lovecraft prose, and touches on music rumored to have Lovecraft ties. He gives details of each song, and in many cases, interviews with the artists behind the music. They discuss how their music ties in with Lovecraft, how they were introduced to his writing, and even their favorite Lovecraft tale.

Though the idea of seeing the music described in words may sound dull to some, Joshi was correct in the forward when he said, "Gary has that rarest of skills among music critics: the ability to describe a song, whether vocal or instrumental, in such a way that readers seem to hear it running through their heads."

Though Hill claims that the book is in no way exhaustive on the subject, it is as close to being exhaustive as it can get. It is designed to snare the readers that are there for the music to start reading Lovecraft, and the readers there for Lovecraft to look out for the music. I found myself getting out my old music to listen for what Hill describes.

Splendidly illustrated throughout with paintings by the great masters, as well as images of ancient relics from diverse cultures and religions, this introduction to angels looks in detail at their scriptural origins, symbolism, and guiding energies. It addresses such issues as what angels might look like and whether they have bodies, and examines such celestial beings as the Hindu devas, the amesha spentas or “bounteous immortals” of Zoroastrianism, the apocalyptic angels of Revelations, and even fallen angels. In addition, those who seek a closer relationship with these heavenly messengers will find practical guidance in the form of visualizations, meditations, and exercises to tap into angels' divine loving energy, and gain their protection, healing, and inspiration.

Steiner started each of these lectures, given during the war years, with a verse for those who had died. He begins this volume with a consideration of the destinies of nations from a spiritual point of view. He goes on to consider the Christ-Impulse and the Michaelic Spirits that serve him. Also included are lectures on the three stages of imaginative knowledge, the rhythm of sleeping and waking, the relation between our physical and etheric bodies, and the prophetic nature of dreams. The last lecture takes up the question of the cosmic meaning of our sense impressions and of our thinking, feeling, and willing.

It is understandable and intelligent, but contains profound insights on life, suggesting wisdom beyond the author's age. It is instantly likable as it takes a real look at life, and opens up new ideas and possibilities to readers through clever and linguistically appealing verse. The poems of An Attempt at Adolescence collectively tell an exciting story that will remind readers of their own thoughts and emotions as adolescents. Appealing and memorable, Mr. Coyle's poetry will grab at the hearts of everyone either currently going through, or hoping to connect back to, adolescence.

                Book Description

It was betrayal, greed, murder and passion that was the cause of this torrid love story between Mario Clemente and Rosa Randazza coming to a climactic end in America. This saga covers the years 1871-1945, about the three generations of the reputable Clemente family of Palozta, Sicily. They owned over twenty-five hundred acres of prosperous vineyards plus other successful holdings. A son, Anthony Damien, was born September 14, 1871 to Daniel and Lina Clemente and almost five years later on May 2, 1876 a daughter Anna Daniela was born. In the spring of 1896, Anthony met this lovely Angelina Sabbentini. They fell in love and married a year later on his twenty-sixth birthday. Angelina happily found herself pregnant toward the end of their third year of marriage. On April 9, 1900, Angelina gave birth to their only biological son Mario Augustus Enrico Clemente. Destiny interfered when Mario was ten years old. This caused Anthony to send him away and enroll him at St. Francis Catholic School in Messina. He became an altar boy and later entered the priesthood. He was compelled to return home after his father's untimely death on Friday night July 13, 1923. Unexpected events forced Mario to forsake his religious background and put many unlawful duties ahead of God. In the second decade of the 1900s, rose a lion named Benito Mussolini. This dictator started the Fascist Party throughout Italy. Arnaldo Mussolini, the younger brother of Benito, laid the groundwork for him and his Fascist troops to invade Sicily in the fall of 1924. Their campaign was to annihilate the Blackhand organization. Mussolini led his soldiers through a series of genocidal killings. Thousands of Sicilians suffered through the purges and torture of this disreputable madman. Benito heard of this Don Mario who he called The Mafia Priest. Destiny, is it controllable or predestined by a higher power?
