Book Description

This well-illustrated and well-referenced book provides a systematic introduction to the modern aspects of the topographical stereochemistry of coordination compounds, which are made up of metal ions surrounded by other non-metal atoms, ions and molecules.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars It is a good book but difficult to read........1999-04-18

Zelewsky's book covers an important topic which is typically not covered in detail in graduate classes in inorganic chemistry. Although the book is somewhat difficult to read, which is probably because the author is not a native English speaker, it is worth wading through.

5 out of 5 stars A concise and beautifully written book on stereochemistry........1997-11-19

The book explains the modern aspects of stereochemistry of coordination compounds including nomenclature, chirality elements, isomer counting, helices, chains and knots, gives an account of the historical background and includes many 3D-figures as stereograms. All figures and additional material are available on the internet. The book is well suited for undergraduates, post-graduates and especially lecturers who can benefit from the supplementary material available. Just colors are missing - but this for the sake of a really affordable price.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as it could be.......2007-07-28

1. No review of subject - only solved problems
2. Not keyed in with Schaum's College Chemistry which does have some basic theory - so you will be doing them out of order with some texts.
3. No unsolved problems to work on to test yourself.

The thing I love about Schaum's outline series is they give you a brief discussion of theory, then a few problems solved in great detail and then several more just like it with the answer but no detail for you to figure out. This book doesn't do that - each problem is solved in moderate detail and some are fairly complex so you have to be pretty sure of what they are talking about before you tackle the problem. The problems increase in difficulty within each chapter so it has some tutorial aspect there.

I would use this for review after I've completed my text and the Schaum's College Chemistry or to hunt some problem that stumped me in my textbook to see how to do it.

2 out of 5 stars Useless.......2005-02-12

This book has the educational value of an inert gas, and is untainted by so much as a chemical trace of intelligence. If you buy this book thinking that it wil save your posterior, think again; most of the problems do not correspond to the types of questions routinely asked in college/university chemistry examinations. Find a good textbook, and search ebay for a corresponding instructor's solution manual.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent referrence book for college chemistry........2000-03-26

I have used this book as a referrence numerous times when I needed to reinforce my understanding of certain problems. Most college text books do not provide enough (or varied) chemistry problems. This book may help you in that arena. The chapters may not go in order with the text that you are using but each section is very simple to find. The book claims to take you all the way through to the most advanced chemistry problems. This book may even be useful in brushing up for your MCAT. Good luck.

        Book Description

        Despite the central role anionic species have been shown to play in both mineralogical and biological processes, until now there have been no comprehensive references dealing exclusively with anionic coordination chemistry. Written by a group comprising pioneering researchers from the United States and Europe, Supramolecular Chemistry of Anions covers all theoretical and practical aspects of anion complexation, from thermodynamics and structure to catalysis and various applications. The authors begin with the 1967 discovery of halide inclusion by bicyclic diammonium receptors and trace the development of anion coordination chemistry through the most recent developments in the field. Topics covered in detail include:
        * Pre-supramolecular anion chemistry
        * Natural and artificial molecules that can act as anion receptors
        * Preorganization and chemical design
        * Structural, thermodynamic, electrochemical, and photochemical aspects of anion coordination
        * Computer methods for receptor design and multiple host-guest relations
        * Anion receptor catalysis and molecular recognition and transformation of nucleotides

        Supramolecular Chemistry of Anions is a valuable professional resource for organic and inorganic chemists, analytical chemists, biotechnologists, pharmaceutical scientists, and environmental chemists. It also serves as an excellent graduate-level text for students of molecular recognition, catalysis, and biomimetic chemistry.

        Book Description

        This book deals with polypyrazolylborates (scorpionates), a class of ligands known since 1966, but becoming rapidly popular with inorganic, organometallic and coordination chemists since 1986, because of their versatility and user-friendliness. They can be readily modified sterically and electronically through appropriate substitution on the pyrazole ring and on boron, and have led to a number of firsts in coordination chemistry (first stable CuCO complex, first monomeric MgR complex, and many other such firsts). Their denticity can range from two to four, their "Bite" can be adjusted, and additional coordinating sites can be added to the pyrazolyl rings. Over 170 different scorpionate ligands are known today, and some are published for the first time in this book.

        The author, Swiatoslaw Trofimenko, discovered and developed this ligand system and has written several reviews on the subject. The book is intended as a reference work, placing at the researcher's command practically all of the over 1500 references on the subject up, and into 1999, organized both according to the ligand type and according to the metal or metalloid being coordinated. It acquaints the reader with the special features of this ligand system and permits an assessment of what has been done in a given sub-area, and of which areas remain relatively unexplored. It presents procedures for ligand synthesis, and also covers their use in catalysis and in the modelling of biologically active substances.

              Book Description

              This class-tested text introduces the basics of coordination, solid state, and descriptive main-group chemistry in a uniquely accessible manner, featuring a "less is better than more" approach. The approach offers instructors the opportunity to build upon and present concepts and applications that they find particularly important and fascinating. Consistent with the philosophy that less is better than more, this book does not contain traditional chapters reviewing or expanding on atomic and molecular structure and other topics previously and adequately developed in most introductory courses. As a result, the book moves directly into the presentation of topics central to inorganic chemistry. Written for students, with a conversational prose that is enjoyable and easy to understand, this book presents not only the basic theories and methods of inorganic chemistry (in three self-standing sections), but also a great deal of the history and the applications of the discipline. The author's presentation does not assume prerequisites of organic or physical chemistry.

              Customer Reviews:

              Here's what you're getting with this book:

              Wrong Equations
              Wrong Rules
              Ambiguous and technical (non-clarifying) descriptions
              Important missing sections and theories

              DO NOT buy this text book! I recommend buying a different inorganic chemistry book, perhaps Chang. This book is awful. My fellow students, friends, and professor (who required us to buy it) all agree.
