Book Description
The book will deal with new nanostructured composites, where both the reinforcement and the matrix are bio based. Cellulose combined with natural polymers led to the development of a new class of biodegradable and environmental friendly bionanocomposites. This new family of nanocomposites is expected to have remarkable improvement of material properties when compared with the matrix polymers or conventional micro- and macro-composite materials. Such improvements in properties typically include a higher modulus and strength, improved barrier properties, increased heat distortion temperature. This new class of renewable nanocomposites is expected to capture new market in transportation, medical and packaging applications. This book will include the raw materials which can be used for making these composites, separation/isolation technologies of cellulose based reinforcements from diverse natural resources and it will also include a brief overview of the recent advancements in the surface chemistry of nanocellulose. Characterization methods such as atomic force microscope (AFM), transmission electron microscope (TEM) and scanning electron microscope (SEM), Raman Spectroscopy, for the nano scale cellulose reinforcements and for the bio-nanocomposites will be discussed. Further, different processing methods for nanocomposites and their mechanical, thermal properties, barrier properties will be included. This will be the first book on the topic of cellulose based Nanocomposites! This is a relatively new research field and there are no books available on this topic. There is a growing interest on biopolymer based nanocomposites in developed and developing world (Japan, USA, Europe, China, South Africa, Australia) and especially if the nanocomposites are based totally on renewable raw materials. We can see several ongoing research projects on this topic in Europe and North America, and there is an emerging research trend for developing micro-and nano-fibre reinforced biopolymers.

Not too much into details ..........2000-09-25
Molecular modeling is a topic every scientist is talking about. At least every physicist and chemist. When I started my diploma work doing molecular simulations of polymers, Gelins book was the first i had to read. and indeed it gives a good overview with very many references to standard literature. The book is diveded into twelve chapters starting with how polymer chains are built, how to consider the detailed interaction mechanisms and then going on to how specific polymeric properties, e.g. mechanical behaviour, scattering, conductivity ... can be and are simulated. The book suits best for people who want to get an introduction to the subject. For those already familiar with the principles of molecular modeling i'd suggest the book of Allen and Tildesley on "Computer Simulation of Liquids".

Customer Reviews:
Good book but overpriced.......2002-02-16
This book deals with polypropylene technology, from catalysis to processing/applications. It is a very informative book and very useful, ... . I bought it for about 100.00 three years ago. You are better off borrowing from the library, because it is not a book that you are going to consult often. It is mostly for informative reading.
A very useful book........1998-04-15
A very good book for people interested in polypropylene. It does not spend an inordinate amount of time in any one subject. Covers the newer metallocene catalysts as well as the older polymerization technologies. Overall a well balanced book.

A Must-have Book for Polyurethane Chemists .......2006-04-07
This is a book that can be used either as a textbook or as a reference book on your desk. I started to read this book in 1989 and used the knowledge in this book when I conducted laboratory research on polyurethanes a year later. I was guided with this book thoughout my polyurethane researches in the following 10 years. This is a very practical book from the fundamentals to the applications.
An excellent overview of Polyurethane chemistry........2000-04-14
This book covers just about everything relating to polyurethanes: Chemistry, catalysts, uses of polyurethanes, processing equipment etc. If you are involved in any kind of polyuethane chemistry you should have this book.
Book Description
This new text provides an integrated view of the forces that influence the patterns and rates of vertebrate evolution from the level of living populations and species to those that resulted in the origin of the major vertebrate groups. The evolutionary roles of behavior, development, continental drift, and mass extinctions are compared with the importance of variation and natural selection that were emphasized by Darwin. It is extensively illustrated, showing major transitions between fish and amphibians, dinosaurs and birds, and land mammals to whales. No book since Simpson's Major Features of Evolution has attempted such a broad study of the patterns and forces of evolutionary change. Undergraduate students taking a general or advanced course on evolution, and graduate students and professionals in evolutionary biology and paleontology will find the book of great interest.
Customer Reviews:
Evolution - the big picture.......2000-11-26
This reference starts off by noting problems in evolutionary theory, particularly that while short-term microevolution shows Darwinian characteristics, long-term macroevolution based on the fossil record does not, with species suddenly appearing and then persisting for long periods with few changes. Vertebrates are proposed as a model for studying evolution, noting that they are a monophyletic group, have sexual reproduction, share a similar body plan, and most importantly have an excellent fossil record. While the knowledgeable reader will find this reference interesting in its integration of the forces affecting vertebrate evolution, the more general reader will find a variety of topics from fundamentals of population genetics to evolutionary development to the origins of major vertebrate groups, useful reading.

Book Description
This textbook examines a broad range of topics covered in evolutionary biology courses. Part one sets the historical, physical, and chemical framework for the origin of life, and provides in-depth coverage of genome evolution, metabolic pathways, the genetic code, and cellular organization in primeval life. Part two concentrates on the genetic processes underlying the diversity of gene organization, function, and expression; adaptation and neutral evolution; gene frequency changes in populations; and tempos and modes of speciation. Part three emphasizes patterns and trends in evolution as deduced from morphological and molecular phylogenetic analyses and from geological and paleontological studies. The final two chapters describe major evolutionary concepts as seen in the emergence of the human family from its ancestral vertebrate beginnings to Homo sapiens. The text is enhanced by numerous tables and illustrations, many from the original research literature. Extensive references, reading lists, and summaries accompany each chapter, providing students with the opportunity to explore further the ongoing challenge of the evolutionary biology of past and present life on Earth.

Book Description
This book explores ways in which systematic patterns are used to infer evolutionary processes. Among evolutionary biologists and systematists there is a constant interchange between those that study the process of evolution (e.g., mutation, selection, speciation) and those that study its patterns (e.g., variation, geographic distribution, ontogeny, phylogeny). Because patterns influence the development of theories, and processes yield patterns, it is not always easy to distinguish one from another. This book is dialectic and helps crystallize a continuing debate over the relationship of patterns to process theories.
Key Features
* Contributions by leading systematists, evolutionary biologists, and philosophers
* Illustrates the debate over how and if evolutionary processes can be inferred from systematic patterns
* Illustrates a continuing interplay between systematics and evolutionary theory
Customer Reviews:
Excellent overview.......2005-12-09
This book, although somewhat dated, provides an excellent look at the broad trends of evolution through the eyes of a leading Johns Hopkins paleontologist. Stanley examines explains the modern synthesis, fossil evidence, speciation and extinction rates, quantum speciation, large-scale trends, and the dynamics of species turnover. Among the groups examined are gastropods, echinoids, corals, microfossils, graptolites, and vertebrates.
