    Book Description

The manipulation of functional groups by oxidative or reductive processes is central to organic chemistry. Despite the importance of these reactions, no existing text has attempted to summarize them simply for students. Together with a later volume in the series, this book provides a clear and comprehensive summary of oxidative and reductive processes, emphasizing general principles and common factors, and showing the applications of these reactions in organic synthesis.

      Book Description

Catalysts are increasingly used by chemists engaged in fine chemical synthesis within both industry and academia. Today, there exists a huge choice of high-tech catalysts, which add enormously to the repertoire of synthetic possibilities. However, catalysts are occasionally capricious, sometimes difficult to use and almost always require both skill and experience in order to achieve optimal results. This series aims to be a practical help for advanced undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate students, as well as experienced chemists in industry and academia working in organic and organometallic synthesis.
      The series features:
      * Tested and validated procedures.
      * Authoritative reviews on classes of catalysts.
      * Assessments of all types of catalysts.
      * Expertise from the Leverhulme Centre for Innovative Catalysis, Liverpool, UK.
The review section in the first volume of the series contains a report by Stanley M. Roberts on the integration of biotransformations into the catalyst portfolio.
The procedure section contains a wide variety of synthetic protocols, such as epoxidations of unsaturated ketones and esters, asymmetric reductions of carbon-oxygen double bonds, asymmetric hydrogenations of carbon-carbon double bonds and other types of reaction. The featured catalysts include a wide range of different materials such as poly-D-leucine, D-fructose-based dioxiranes, oxaborolidine borane, some important titanium and ruthenium complexes as well as baker's yeast. For each reaction there are one or several detailed protocols on how to prepare and employ the various catalysts.

        Book Description

Volume 5 in the Catalysts for Fine Chemical Synthesis series describes new procedures for the regio- and stereo-controlled transformations of compounds involving oxidation or reduction reactions. It describes a wide range of catalysts, including organometallic systems, biocatalysts and biomimetics. This volume also includes descriptions of a variety of conversions, including: Baeyer-Villiger oxidations; Epoxidation reactions; Hydroxylation reactions; Oxidation of alcohols to aldehydes, ketones and carboxylic acids; Reduction of ketones; and Reduction of alkenes including α, β-unsaturated carbonyl compounds. The book will be an important text for practising synthetic organic chemists in industry and academia.

                Book Description

Provides comprehensive coverage of the types of reductions undergone by the various classes of organic chemistry. Discusses reductions according to what bond or functional group is reduced by different reagents. Gives special attention to selective reductions that are suitable for the reduction of one particular type of bond or function without affecting other bonds or functions present in the same molecule. Special emphasis is placed on enantioselective and diastereoselective reductions effected both by chiral reagents and by microorganisms. Reducing agents are correlated with both the starting compounds and the products of reduction. Includes discussions of methods, mechanisms, stereochemistry, and scopes of reducing agents. Selected laboratory procedures demonstrate the main reduction techniques. Correlation tables and thorough author and subject indexes make this book easy to use.

Throughout the manual, a variety of interactive activities and experiments convey the basic concepts of microbiology––all in a student-friendly tone. Students also have the opportunity to explore methods that allow the safe movement or transfer of microbial cells from one type of growth environment to another, classification and identification of microbes, microbial biochemistry, as well as laboratory exercises from medical, food, and environmental microbiology.

From the biology of the protozoa to parasites of rabbits and hamsters, mice and birds, reptiles to dogs, cats and even sheep, edits FLYNN'S PARASITES OF LABORATORY ANIMALS offers up extensive chapters packed with black and white photos, tables and charts, diagnosis, hosts, lifestyle, and pathologic effects, and more.

                  5 out of 5 stars A masterpiece!.......2007-06-24

Dr. Baker has done an outstanding job of updating and expanding the classic Flynn's Parasites of Laboratory Animals. This new edition has chapters summarizing the biology of each class of parasites as well as a chapter for each commonly used laboratory animal. This is the definitive text on the subject, and will likely remain that way for many years like its previous edition.

                          Book Description

A diverse team of researchers, technologists, and engineers describe, in simple and practical language, the major current and evolving technologies for improving the biocatalytic capabilities of mammalian, microbial, and plant cells. The authors present state-of-the-art techniques, proven methods, and strategies for industrial screening, cultivation, and scale-up of these cells, and describe their biotech and industrial uses. Special emphasis is given to the solving critical issues encountered during the discovery of new drugs, process development, and the manufacture of new and existing compounds. Other topics include recombinant protein expression, bioinformatics, high throughput screening, analytical tools in biotechnology, DNA shuffling, and genomics discovery.

2 out of 5 stars Horrible Lab Book.......2007-09-30

Well, I received the manual and I was expecting that I purchased the 7th edition. Instead, I got the 6th edition. I think they should of specified in the beginning that it was the 6th edition originally so I wouldn't have bought it in the first place. ALSO, a majority of the EXERCISES were MISSING! How can I use a manual that is missing questions! I decided to keep it since it had the same instructions as the 7th, but now I have to always photocopy the exercises from someone else. Basically it was a HORRIBLE experience.

5 out of 5 stars Microbio Lab Manual.......2006-11-10

Medical applications within each lab exercise are pertinent and relevant to my career interests. Great detail and excellent diagrams are helpful, although novice laboratory students should perform experiments under supervision of experienced instructors.

3 out of 5 stars Pricey, but good.......1999-09-02

An excellent introduction into microbiology. It covers agar working techniques beautifully.

Some problems with it though. First, it references a text book for further reading. I don't have the text book.

Second, the expirements call for very specific bacteria/fungi/viral cultures that are difficult to obtain and mix if you are not using the book as part of a university class, in which case you'll likely not have any choice as to which text you use. Specifically a large number of the experiments utilize organisms which are potentially human pathogens, so do not expect to be able to aquire the raw materials for many of these experiments.

And last but not least is the price. However I've not found a better book for self teaching basic agar culture. Emphasis is on test tube culture, making the working materials a bit chearper and more available to most folks.
