Lavishly illustrated with seventy-four color plates and fifty black-and-white photographs and drawings, Never for Want of Powder tells the story of a world-class munitions factory constructed by the Confederacy in 1861, the only large-scale permanent building project undertaken by a government often characterized as lacking modern industrial values. In this comprehensive examination of the powder works, five scholars--a historian, physicist, curator, architectural historian, and biographer--bring their combined expertise to the task of chronicling gunpowder production during the Civil War. In doing so, they make a major contribution to understanding the history of wartime technology and Confederate ingenuity.

Early in the war President Jefferson Davis realized the Confederacy's need to supply its own gunpowder. Accordingly Davis selected Col. George Washington Rains to build a gunpowder factory. An engineer and West Point graduate, Rains relied primarily on a written pamphlet rather than on practical experience in building the powder mill, yet he succeeded in designing a model of efficiency and safety. He sited the facilities at Augusta, Georgia, because of the city's central location, canal transportation, access to water power, railroad facilities, and relative security from attack.

As much a story of people as of machinery, Never for Want of Powder recounts the ingenuity of the individuals involved with the project. A cadre of talented subordinates--including Frederick Wright, C. Shaler Smith, William Pendleton, and Isadore P. Girardey--assisted Rains to a degree not previously appreciated by historians. This volume also documents the coordinated outflow of gunpowder and ammunition, and Rains's difficulty in preparing for the defense of Augusta.

Unbalanced level.......2006-11-05

This second volume edited, like the first one Gunpowder: The History of an International Technology, by Brenda J. Buchanan, is an anthology of 20 essays on gunpowder, its history and production. And like in the first one, the academic rank of the various entries is not even but, unfortunately, this time the differences appears to be much more marked. Together with some very remarkable entries (for example: The Indian Response to Firearms, 1300-1750, The Barcarena Gunpowder Factory, Portuguese Overseas Gunpowder Factories, Gunpowder Manufacture in Cairo, Breech-loading Guns with removable Powder Chambers) we find a quantity of essays of very scant relevance and/or of inadequate scholarship.
It is a pity and, for a third volume we look forward to read, we really hope that the Editor will select the material with more awareness and more rigorous criteria.

The Seven Years War, the most severe and geographically extensive yet known, dominated the mid-eighteenth century. In the course of Britain's struggle for supremacy over France the army and navy required an unprecedented quantityof gunpowder. This book supplies the first detailed study of the gunpowder trade, which was of crucial importance to the conduct of the war. It describes how gunpowder was supplied by watermills in south-east England and the hazardous procedure by which it was shipped to the main magazine at Greenwich.
Dr West examines four main aspects of the gunpowder trade: supply, distribution, legislation and trade, and manufacture, paying particular attentionto the needs of the army and navy and the role of central government. In addition, attention is given to the demands of the regular gunpowder trade, of such importance to the nation's economy that it continued to thrive largelyat the expense of the needs of war.
JENNY WEST worked on much of the material presented in this book during the course of her research for her PhD at the Institute of Historical Research, London University.
