Modern NMR Techniques for Chemistry Research.......2002-01-05
This is an excellent book for learning the NMR basics. It is very comprehensible, thorough, and it is aimed at people who, although interested in NMR, might not have the full background to understand an in depth, quantum mechanical treatment of the subject.
I bought a second-hand copy of this book from amazon.com and am very satisfied with it. It is in almost brand new condition, with no underlinings or highlightings of any kind. Although I was at first wary of buying a second-hand book through the internet, this experience turned out to be quite satisfactory and I will likely do it again.
Excellent book for the intuitive reader.......2000-01-28
For one who's interested in NMR research there are several types of books that combine together to give a full picture of the field and its various aspects. The book by Derome supplies the intuitive overview of 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy, which is so much needed, especially by novices in the field, and also by more experienced NMR people who need a quick reference to an NMR related technique, phenomenon or term. Starting with a good introduction to pulse NMR, the book continues to a survey of some of the main methods employed in NMR spectroscopy: NOE and its application to the measurement of internuclear distances, homo- and heteronuclear shift correlation, polarization transfer type of experiments and the use of spin echoes. The book is loaded with illustrations that help clarify the various pulse sequences and their effect on the spin systems in discussion. The language is always clear and the lack of formal rigorousness is more than compensated for by highly imaginative qualitative descriptions of the various phenomena and methods. Each chapter ends with a list of references relevant to the content of the chapter. The only problem is that the book, wonderful as it is, hasn't been updated (if I'm not mistaken) since its first edition (1987), and in such a fast moving field as NMR spectroscopy is, many additions should be made to make the book more complete. Nevertheless, the wealth of information in the book and particularly the way it is presented, makes this book a must in any NMRist library.

Book Description
Magnetic resonance (MR) measures the tiny radio frequency signals emitted by the nucleus of the atom when living or inanimate material is placed in a magnetic field. On the one hand, these signals allow scientists to picture the architecture of molecules too small to be seen under the most
powerful microscope, while on the other hand they give medical doctors a detailed picture of the internal structure of the human body without resorting to surgery of any kind. These two applications (high-resolution NMR spectroscopy and the MRI scanner) seem to be worlds apart, but the underlying
physical principles are the same, and it makes sense to treat them together.
Chemists and clinicians who use magnetic resonance have much to learn about each other's specialities if they are to make the best use of magnetic resonance technology. Many in the medical fraternity will benefit from a general appreciation of how high-resolution NMR has advanced our understanding
of human biochemistry, diagnostic medicine, and the search for new drugs. A broad general understanding of magnetic resonance should prove of interest to doctors who make use of the MRI scanner, and to those of their patients who wish to learn more about these daunting machines, even if it is only
the question of their own personal safety.
At the other end of the spectrum, chemists and biochemists who use high-resolution NMR spectroscopy in their everyday investigations will benefit by broadening their horizons to cover the exciting new developments in MR imaging and in vivo spectroscopy, as one justification for their research is the
eventual benefit to health care.
Finally, anyone interested in how the human mind works (cognitive neuroscience) will find a chapter devoted to the exciting new developments in functional magnetic resonance imaging of the brain. Each disparate group has something useful to learn from the others. The treatment is pictorial rather
than mathematical.

Book Description
Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) spectroscopy - also sometimes termed Electron Spin Resonance spectroscopy - has manifold potential uses in biochemistry and medicine. The paramount importance of EPR spectroscopy applied to biological tissues and fluids is that it identifies the changes in redox processes that contribute to disease.
EPR spectroscopy has come a long way from its original use to detect malignant tumors. For example, the development and later refinement of methods of low-temperature registration of biological tissues widened the scope of EPR spectroscopy. Innovations made possible by the introduction of spin labels, probes, and traps made EPR spectroscopy ever more applicable to biochemistry and medicine, to the point where
in vivo studies are being carefully considered.
This comprehensive book discusses spectra of many tissues and bodily fluids, and the quantitative nature of paramagnetic centers in both normal individuals and patients suffering from a variety of diseases. Special attention is given to the EPR examination of bio-molecules, such as enzymes, polypeptides, vitamins, lipids, hydrocarbons, etc., which play an essential role in human activity.
This book will be of great interest to physicians specializing in many different areas. Similarly, biologists, biochemists, biophysicists, and chemists will find this book very useful. It has also been written so that it may be used as a textbook at graduate level.

Book Description
This is the first book to provide a comprehensive explanation of the bewildering array of acronyms and technical terms which have crept into the literature in recent years. Aimed at chemists and biochemists who have only an elementary knowledge of NMR, it provides a clear description of the concepts and basic principles involved. Recent developments in two-dimensional NMR methods in liquids have had a significant impact on the study of biological systems, and detailed descriptions of the techniques currently available are given. Mathematical descriptions are used where appropriate, since in many cases this is the only medium rigorous enough to convey ideas that are quantum mechanical in nature. However the level of mathematical competence required is low, and the more complex aspects are fully explained in the text. The use of a dictionary format allows easy reference. Each term is explained in full, extensive cross-references are included, and suggestions for further reading are given at the end of many entries.

General Reference Book.......2001-09-13
This is a great general reference book on NMR. Vastly superior to "The Handbook of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance" by Ray Freeman. Save your money and buy this book instead. Every person that uses NMR should have this book. This book also provides a general review of the mathematics used in NMR.

Book Description
The foundation for understanding the function and dynamics of biological systems is knowledge of their structure. Many experimental methodologies are used for determination of structure, each with special utilities. The volumes in this series on
Biological Magnetic
Resonance emphasize the methods that involve magnetic resonance. This volume seeks to provide a critical evaluation of EPR methods for determining the distances between two unpaired electrons. The editors invited the authors to make this a very practical book, with specific numerical examples of how experimental data are worked up to produce a distance estimate, and realistic assessments of uncertainties and of the range of applicability, along with examples of the power of the technique to answer biological problems.

Book Description
Now available in paper, this stimulating book concentrates on evolutionary change under environmental stress at levels ranging from the molecular to the biogeographic, with an emphasis on genetic aspects. This approach contrasts with most of the literature of evolutionary biology, as the emphasis here is upon the extreme end of the stress gradient in terms of resistance. Major topics in this interdisciplinary book include the concept of stress and its evolutionary and ecological importance; genetic variation in stress response and the effects of stress on genetic variation; and costs and trade-offs involving stress responses. An approach to stress resistance in terms of energetics permits the development of links between genetics, ecology, physiology, and behaviour. The book concludes with applications concerning range expansions of species, conservation strategies, and pollution effects.
