Interfacial Phenomena and Convection
Alexander A. Nepomnyashchy , Manuel G. Velarde , and Pierre Colinet Manufacturer: Chapman & Hall/CRC ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 1584882565 |
Book Description
Interfacial phenomena driven by heat or mass transfer are widespread in science and various branches of engineering. Research in this area has become quite active in recent years, attributable in part, at least, to the entry of physicists and their sophisticated experimental techniques into the field. Until now, however, the field has lacked a readable account of the recent developments. Interfacial Phenomena and Convection remedies this problem by furnishing a self-contained monograph that examines a rich variety of phenomena in which interfaces pay a crucial role. From a unified perspective that embraces physical chemistry, fluid mechanics, and applied mathematics, the authors study recent developments related to the Marangoni effect, including patterned convection and instabilities, oscillatory/wavy phenomena, and turbulent phenomena. They examine Bénard layers subjected to transverse and longitudinal thermal gradients and phenomena involving surface tension gradients as the driving forces, including falling films, drops, and liquid bridges. It is only in the past two or three decades that researchers have performed suitable, clear-cut experiments involving interfacial phenomena, and the stage is now set for a virtual explosion of the field. Interfacial Phenomena and Convection will bring you quickly up to date on the advances realized and prepare you to both use the results and to make further advances.

Interfacial Instability
Lewis E. Johns , and Ranga Narayanan Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items: ASIN: 0387954805 |
Book Description
This book presents a set of essays on interfacial instability, essays on such topics as jets, solidification and melting, precipitation, and electrodeposition. The book deals with the linear theory; as a result, pencil and paper suffice to work through the material. The first two essays provide the necessary background: the first is an introduction to jets; the second explains how to solve a problem in interfacial instability, where the boundary separating two phases can be displaced.||The authors approach interfacial instabilities through their physical origins. These lie in the effect of surface displacements on gradients of pressure, temperature, and composition and on whether or not a perturbed gradient reinforces the displacement causing the perturbation. Intended for graduate students, the discussions are not mathematically demanding, but they do rely on an understanding of fluid flow, heat conduction, and diffusion.||Students will find that the book deepens their understanding of problems in which deflecting surfaces are important; instructors will find in the essays useful material to enrich their lectures.||Contents:|- Domain and Surface Perturbations|- Applications to the Stefan Problems|- Jets and Bridges|- Spinning Jets|- Rayleigh-Taylor and Saffman-Taylor Problems|- Solidification and Precipitation|- ElectrodepositionCustomer Reviews:
The best book in its area.......2003-06-16
One of its kind.......2003-06-08
A worth buy book.......2003-06-04
A worthy book for the careful reader.......2003-04-15
The energy arguments in the chapters on jets and Rayleigh Taylor are really nice. The chapters on rotating liquid bridges, solidification, precipitation, and electrodeposition contain a lot of new material. The subject matter is explained in physical terms with pictures and predictive calculations are then made that support the physical arguments. This book is great for intermediate graduate students and teachers who like to use a pen and a tablet. I have read several books on stability of fluid flow and this book is among the best. The book is best read in a research group and many interesting ideas will emanate. A worthy buy!

Liquid and Vapor Flows in Porous Bodies: Surface Phenomena (Topics in Chemical Engineering)
V N Churaev Manufacturer: Taylor & Francis ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 9056991493 |
Book Description
Adopts a completely original approach to the study of processes of mass transfer. In contrast to the usual approach, based on the concept of continuum media and the theory of heat and mass transfer, the topic is considered from a new viewpoint, taking into account the heterogeneous dispersal state of porous bodies. The editord base their discussion on the theory of surface forces and microhydrodynamic analysis of the processes of mass transport of gases, liquids and vapors, providing the reader with a systematic account of liquid/solid and gas/solid interfaces.
Topics treated in this book include structural peculiarities, equilibrium and properties of liquids in porous bodies. Various mechanisms of mass transfer are considered, including liquid flow in pores and films, gas diffusion, combined transfer of liquid and vapor, convective diffusion in solutions, structure formation, capillary phenomena, and wetting. This unique book provides a wealth of information from the former Soviet Union.

Statistical Thermodynamics and Differential Geometry of Microstructured Materials (The IMA Volumes in Mathematics & Its Applications)
Manufacturer: Springer-Verlag Berlin and Heidelberg GmbH & Co. K ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 3540940278 |
Book Description
Substances possessing heterogeneous microstructure on the nanometer and micron scales are scientifically fascinating and technologically useful. Examples of such substances include liquid crystals, microemulsions, biological matter, polymer mixtures and composites, vycor glasses, and zeolites. In this volume, an interdisciplinary group of researchers report their developments in this field. Topics include statistical mechanical free energy theories which predict the appearance of various microstructures, the topological and geometrical methods needed for a mathematical description of the subparts and dividing surfaces of heterogeneous materials, and modern computer-aided mathematical models and graphics for effective exposition of the salient features of microstructured materials.
