Book Description

Hurricane Katrina, in its torrential devastation was indeed likely to generate emotional and psychological trauma in the minds of children, if only for a temporary period of time.

Thus, the perceived need for the collaborative (educator and illustrator) creation of this book was born with the decision to use realistic art renderings, rather than cartoons along with incisive educational text to more accurately portray, however unfortunately one of America's most devastating acts of nature.

This book with the understanding of children's natural ability for resiliency and optimism, imaginatively place themselves in the midst of Katrina's fury, and permits them to react in a measurable manner to the dispair, as well as to the courage, faith, spirit, future hopes and determination of the actual victims.

The art and captions of this publications are intended to emphasize, and to depict for children in a particpatory manner, the extreme impact Katrina has made in the lives of New Orleaneans, and also on the lives of caring people in general.

The line drawings in this colouring book are so lovely that I was almost too intimidated to start colouring them in! Truly beautiful illustrations and I have enjoyed my time with them, and look forward to many more hours of colouring.....

5 out of 5 stars An Incredible Gift.......1999-12-13

This book makes an incredible gift. I, personally, can't wait to color in these beautiful Tibetan Drawings. I have always loved the art of Tibet and admired the meditation involved in producing it. I think it is a brilliant idea to make a book that allows all of us a chance to participate in this sacred tradition.

5 out of 5 stars "The Tibetan Art Coloring Book" is one of my favorites!.......1999-09-02

I am a teenager interested in Tibetan culture and the Tibetan Buddhist religion. I love to look at, color, and create my own thangkas (Tibetan paintings), which made this book a pleasure to work on! "The Tibetan Art Coloring Book" is one of two Tibetan art coloring books I have. Unlike the other one, this book comes with a coil on the top, so you can easily fold the book, and go from one picture to another! The paper is of perfect texture to use with colored pencils, being very smooth. I, infact, scanned some of the pictures I colored, and put them on my personal homepage!

Why some you may ask, it could be the technology that I was looking is still new in the market place or may be in another book that I has yet to find. I strongly recommend to those who need to understand about colorants to read this book. Thank you

                Book Description

Recent studies of vocal development in infants have shed new light on old questions of how the speech capacity is founded and how it may have evolved in the human species. Vocalizations in the very first months of life appear to provide previously unrecognized clues to the earliest steps in the process by which language came to exist and the processes by which communicative disorders arise.

Perhaps the most interesting sounds made by infants are the uniquely human 'protophones' (loosely, 'babbling'), the precursors to speech. Kimbrough Oller argues that these are most profitably interpreted in the context of a new infrastructural model of speech. The model details the manner in which well-formed speech units are constructed, and it reveals how infant vocalizations mature through the first months of life by increasingly adhering to the rules of well-formed speech.

He lays out many advantages of an infrastructural approach. Infrastructural interpretation illuminates the significance of vocal stages, and highlights clinically significant deviations, such as the previously unnoticed delays in vocal development that occur in deaf infants. An infrastructural approach also specifies potential paths of evolution for vocal communicative systems. Infrastructural properties and principles of potential communicative systems prove to be organized according to a natural logic--some properties and principles naturally presuppose others. Consequently some paths of evolution are likely while others can be ruled out. An infrastructural analysis also provides a stable basis for comparisons across species, comparisons that show how human vocal capabilities outstrip those of their primate relatives even during the first months of human infancy.

The Emergence of the Speech Capacity will challenge psychologists, linguists, speech pathologists, and primatologists alike to rethink the ways they categorize and describe communication. Oller's infraphonological model permits provocative reconceptualizations of the ways infant vocalizations progress systematically toward speech, insightful comparisons between speech and the vocal systems of other species, and fruitful speculations about the origins of language.

                    Book Description

Research in whale origins is now in an explosive phase, with a cascade of discoveries adding to our understanding of the evolutionary pattern and a suite of new techniques being applied to address new questions. The objective of this volume is to provide a snapshot of this explosion. The volume paints the scene with a broad brush. Taken together the chapters clearly indicate that cetacean origins is a field that is dynamic, multidisciplinary, and that the end of the explosive phase is not in sight.

'Up to now, a 'state of the art' summary of research on whale origins has not been available. This book admirably fills that void and should be added to the library of any serious mammologist or paleomammalogist.'

4 out of 5 stars A little out of date but still very good.......2004-05-05

Although it's a little out of date now, The Emergence of Animals: the Cambrian Breakthrough by McMenamin and McMenamin is a very nice, easy to read overview of the PreCambrian-Cambrian diversification of animal populations. Both the Edicarian and the Burgess Shale fauna are discussed extensively as are stromatolites, as one would expect, since these are the primary fossil and trace fossil representations of the biota of the period. The limitations of this material, and the rarity of fossilization of animals without hard body parts is also pointed out to the reader. In particular, the difficulty of positively identifying remains of early life is pointed out by the primary author who himself misidentified a geological phenomenon for a biological one. The likelihood that there existed a long era of evolution prior to the apparent "explosion" in the Cambrian is discussed as is the chemical and geological evidence for such precursors.

While the book by J. William Schopf, Cradle of Life : The Discovery of Earth's Earliest Fossils, is more current and goes into greater detail about the discovery of early life, what forms evidence takes, how it can be mistaken, what information is derived from study of the remains, and what indirect evidence tells us about the early earth, it might be a little too much information for those who are only casually interested in the topic of fossils. The McMenamin book might be a better place to begin, while the Schopf book would be a good follow-up for those who want more information.

5 out of 5 stars Points to ponder about the emergence of animals on earth.......2000-09-07

In this book McMenamin and McMenamin set the stage and provide their thoughts about the emergence of animals on earth. Contents of the book include the following:

                    1) The Cambrian explosion -- this section provides a brief introduction to the "explosion" of shelled animal fossils in Cambrian rock formations, following the Precambrian rocks that lack such fossils, and leaves off talking a bit about the Ediacaran fauna -- a fauna that is found in Precambrian rock strata.

                    2) Aliens here on earth? -- this section deals with the issue of trace fossils vs body fossils, and continues discussing the relevance and significance of the Ediacaran fauna as evidence of Precambrian (animal?) life. The authors also provide a helpful overview of Ediacaran fauna including photos and illustrations of them.

                    3) The mudeaters -- this section deals with psuedofossils (apparently disturbances in ancient mud/sediment layers), misidentifications of those as being fossils when they are not, etc. The authors then go on to discuss possibilities of animal life that were real makers or Precambrian trace fossils.

                    4) Small shelly fossils -- this section presents ideas about the earliest assemblages of shelly fossils at the Precambrian - Cambrian boundary, including the "Tommotian fauna."

                    5) The golden spike -- this section addresses the process and uncertainty of identifying a definitive boundary marker that hails the beginning of the Cambrian era. (This is no small issue, and the beginning time mark of this era has shifted farther and farther back in time as we learn more about the history of life.)

                    6) Rifting of Rodinia -- this section addresses the possibility that the emergence of animal life may well have been associated with a period of glaciation, as well as other pieces of evidence that help to unravel the sticky problem of describing the emergence of metazoan animal life.

                    7) The garden of Ediacara -- this section addresses trophic strategies for acquiring energy and nutrients anomg early animal life on earth.

                    8) Ecological feedback and intelligence -- this section addresses the effects of feedback mechanisms on the emergence of life. For example, the emergence of grazing herbivores led to the demise of previously ungrazed stromatolite beds...nothing had eaten them before. That consequently opened up more open space on the substrate, and in ecological and evolutionary space for other kinds of autotrophs to gain a toe-hold in new community structures. This section also addressed the significance of symmetrical animals bearing eyes and better developed nervous systems than ever before.

                    9) Precambrian oxygen -- this section provides an overview of the development of an atmosphere on earth that is suitable for sustaining animals that rely on respiration. By the Cambrian, the atmosphere attained an O2 level of about 2%...apparently a critical level needed to sustain respiring life.

                    10) Ecological chaos and innovation -- this section addresses ideas about the nature of the emergence of life on earth...was it a gradual or a fast process of emergence...as the authors put it, "did the Cambrian come in with a whimper or a bang?" In either case, the consequence of an apparent age of chaotic ecological activities, extinctions and emergences of many kinds of animals (and presumably other forms of life, too) led to a fossil record that includes evidence of rapid and wide-spread innovation. Thus, the emergence of animal life that gave rise to the kinds of animal diversity we have today.

Though now 10 years old, this is still a good book. Evolutionary biologists and paleontologists will nod in agreement at some points, shake their fists at others. But, all in all, this is an excellent book if you are interested in ideas and information describing possible scenarios about the emergence of life on earth. There are good photos and abundant illustrations that help the reader see and start to understand the forms of animals being discussed.

                    Give it a look.

5 stars for the informed lay-naturalist as well as for the professional biologist/paleontologist!

                            Book Description

This Monograph examines a series of ten studies conducted on the social-cognitive abilities of three young chimpanzees, ages one to four years. In the studies, all previously conducted with human infants, showed the chimpanzeesrsquo; abilities to understand and imitate the goal-directed actions of others, but not their rational choices. Each exhibited the ability to understand the visual perception of others, but not the precise focus of their attention. There was no evidence of any ability to reverse roles with a partner in a collaborative interaction, to comprehend the communicative comprehensions behind a pointing gesture, or to engage in genuine joint attention with others. These results suggest that the ontogeny of human social cognition comprises two relatively distinct trajectories: one for understanding intentional action and perception, common to all apes, and another for sharing psychological states with others in collaborative acts involving joint intentions and attentions, unique to the human species.

'Hot Blood', despite the title and the gaping pelycosaur on the cover isn't a Jurassic Park ripoff by any means. So if that's what you're looking for, save your money (but not much money - check the price..). Instead, it's a very well put together combination of coloring book and text (sort of like a Zoology text for kids) that both shows how this family evolved and how they (supposedly) worked. The latter is described in a form that reminded me of my old Romer + Parsons undergrad text, but this is a lot more fun. I have a 5 year old boy who has loved 2 of them to small pieces. First time thru was the coloring; then cutting them out. You might want to take advantage of the authors' copyright that allows you to make copies of the pages for personal use - and some of the halftones are so ncely done that it seemed a shame to 'waste' them on a 5 year-old, but it was hardly wasted. Good kids books are rare; good cheap ones are rarer; good ones that are so cheap that you can chop them up...? my $0.02 hjm
