Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (Oxford Chemistry Primers, 32)
ASIN: 0080427987 |
Book Description
Paperback. From the initial observation of proton magnetic resonance in water and in paraffin, the discipline of nuclear magnetic resonance has seen unparalleled growth as an analytical method. Modern NMR spectroscopy is a highly developed, yet still evolving, subject which finds application in chemistry, biology, medicine, materials science and geology. In this book, emphasis is on the more recently developed methods of solution-state NMR applicable to chemical research, which are chosen for their wide applicability and robustness. These have, in many cases, already become established techniques in NMR laboratories, in both academic and industrial establishments. A considerable amount of information and guidance is given on the implementation and execution of the techniques described in this book.
Customer Reviews:
Quality book, but can't compete with the original.......2003-03-16
Just a bit of material to supplement the earlier review... This is a very solid book for advanced users of NMR spectroscopy investigating organic compounds. However, if you can get your hands on it, Derome's "Modern NMR Techniques for Chemistry Research" is better written and clearer to understand. Unfortunately, that book has been out of print for some time and is now hard to find. That said, Claridge's book represents and extra decade's worth of material and you really can't go wrong with either book.
successor to classic.......2000-11-14
Many people have been waiting for the publication of this book. As the successor of one of the most beloved classic NMR texts "Modern Nmr Techniques for Chemistry Research - by A.E.Derome, 1987" it is nicely updated and still nice looking and easy to understand.
For those who want to get some insights on the NMR experiment, it would be a great help. This seems to target organic chemists who use NMR everyday and eager to know what is going on inside, but even serious NMR research may want to see this book. This book includes more recent technique and discussion on the solution NMR, and also some of bried overview on the solid state NMR. Easy to follow explanation, more intuitive and pictorial description would be very helpful to the chemistry student and researchers.

Spectrometric Identification of Organic Compounds

Book Description
Nuclear magnetic resonsance (NMR) spectrocopy is the most powerful research tool used in chemistry today, but many chemists have yet to realize its true potential. Recent advances in NMR have led to a formidable array of new techniques - and acronyms - which leaves even the professional spectroscopist bewildered. How, then, can chemists decide which approach will solve their particular structural or mechanistic problem? This book provides a non-mathematical, descriptive approach to modern NMR spectroscopy, taking examples from organic, inorganic, and biological chemistry. It also contains much practical advice about the acquisition and use of spectra. Starting from the simple 'one pulse' sequence, the text employs a 'building block' approach to lead naturally to multiple pulse and two-dimensional NMR. Spectra of readily available compounds illustrate each technique. One- and two- dimensional methods are integrated in three chapters which show how to solve problems by making connections between spins through bonds, through space, or through exchange. There are also chapters on spectrum editing and solids. The final chapter contains a case history which attempts to weave the many strands of the text into a coherent strategy. This second edition reflects the progress made by NMR in the past few years; there is a greater emphasis on inorganic nuclei; some two-colour spectra are used; the treatment of heteronuclear experiments has moved from direct to 'inverse' detection; many new examples and spectra have been included; and the literature to early 1992 has been covered. An accompanying text, Modern NMR spectroscopy: A workbook of chemical problems, by Jeremy Sanders, Edwin Constable, and Brian Hunter, is available from OUP. Using a combination of worked examples and set problems, this workbook provides a practical guide to the accurate interpretation of NMR spectra, which will be of value to students and professional scientists alike.

Modern NMR Techniques for Chemistry Research.......2002-01-05
This is an excellent book for learning the NMR basics. It is very comprehensible, thorough, and it is aimed at people who, although interested in NMR, might not have the full background to understand an in depth, quantum mechanical treatment of the subject.
I bought a second-hand copy of this book from amazon.com and am very satisfied with it. It is in almost brand new condition, with no underlinings or highlightings of any kind. Although I was at first wary of buying a second-hand book through the internet, this experience turned out to be quite satisfactory and I will likely do it again.
Excellent book for the intuitive reader.......2000-01-28
For one who's interested in NMR research there are several types of books that combine together to give a full picture of the field and its various aspects. The book by Derome supplies the intuitive overview of 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy, which is so much needed, especially by novices in the field, and also by more experienced NMR people who need a quick reference to an NMR related technique, phenomenon or term. Starting with a good introduction to pulse NMR, the book continues to a survey of some of the main methods employed in NMR spectroscopy: NOE and its application to the measurement of internuclear distances, homo- and heteronuclear shift correlation, polarization transfer type of experiments and the use of spin echoes. The book is loaded with illustrations that help clarify the various pulse sequences and their effect on the spin systems in discussion. The language is always clear and the lack of formal rigorousness is more than compensated for by highly imaginative qualitative descriptions of the various phenomena and methods. Each chapter ends with a list of references relevant to the content of the chapter. The only problem is that the book, wonderful as it is, hasn't been updated (if I'm not mistaken) since its first edition (1987), and in such a fast moving field as NMR spectroscopy is, many additions should be made to make the book more complete. Nevertheless, the wealth of information in the book and particularly the way it is presented, makes this book a must in any NMRist library.

Book Description
This is the first book to provide a comprehensive explanation of the bewildering array of acronyms and technical terms which have crept into the literature in recent years. Aimed at chemists and biochemists who have only an elementary knowledge of NMR, it provides a clear description of the concepts and basic principles involved. Recent developments in two-dimensional NMR methods in liquids have had a significant impact on the study of biological systems, and detailed descriptions of the techniques currently available are given. Mathematical descriptions are used where appropriate, since in many cases this is the only medium rigorous enough to convey ideas that are quantum mechanical in nature. However the level of mathematical competence required is low, and the more complex aspects are fully explained in the text. The use of a dictionary format allows easy reference. Each term is explained in full, extensive cross-references are included, and suggestions for further reading are given at the end of many entries.

General Reference Book.......2001-09-13
This is a great general reference book on NMR. Vastly superior to "The Handbook of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance" by Ray Freeman. Save your money and buy this book instead. Every person that uses NMR should have this book. This book also provides a general review of the mathematics used in NMR.

Book Description
The use of actual observations to infer the properties of a model is an inverse problem, which are often difficult as they may not have a unique solution. This book proposes a general approach that is valid for linear as well as for nonlinear problems. The philosophy is essentially probabilistic and allows the reader to understand the basic difficulties appearing in the resolution of inverse problems. The book attempts to explain how a method of acquisition of information can be applied to actual real-world problems, including many heuristic arguments. Prompted by recent developments in inverse theory, this text is a completely rewritten version of a 1987 book by the same author, and includes many algorithmic details for Monte Carlo methods, least-squares discrete problems, and least-squares problems involving functions. In addition, some notions are clarified, the role of optimization techniques is underplayed, and Monte Carlo methods are taken much more seriously.

Description:
This paper deals with the use of inverse analysis techniques for the estimation of micro-meteorological parameters required for the characterization of atmospheric boundary layers. The physical problem is formulated in terms of a transient two-dimensional advection-diffusion equation. Concentration measurements of a tracer are assumed to be available for the inverse analysis. The analysis of the sensitivity coefficients and of the determinant of the information matrix reveals the most appropriate sensor locations and duration of the experiment for the estimation of the unknown parameters. The parameter estimation problem is solved with the Levenberg-Marquardt method of minimization of the least squares norm.
