      Book Description

Rubber elasticity is an important sub-field of polymer science. This book is in many ways a sequel to the authors' previous, more introductory book, Rubberlike Elasticity: A Molecular Primer (Wiley-Interscience, 1988), and will in some respects replace the now classic book by L.R.G. Treloar, The Physics of Rubber Elasticity (Oxford, 1975). The present book has much in common with its predecessor, in particular its strong emphasis on molecular concepts and theories. Similarly, only equilibrium properties are covered in any detail. Though this book treats much of the same subject matter, it is a more comprehensive, more up-to-date, and somewhat more sophisticated treatment.

        Book Description

Carbon Fibers presents an up-to-date review of the progress pertaining to the formation of carbon fibers from rayon, acrylic, and pitch precursors. The book emphasizes the preparation, characterization, and properties of commercial materials. It also considers the compressive properties of carbon fibers, the lack of correlation between surface characterization and fiber-matrix interactions, and the discrepancy between surface composition as determined by XPS and the reaction of surface groups with chemical reagents. Other topics discussed include:

        Book Description

Thermal Analysis of Polymeric Materials systematically treats macroscopic measurements by thermal analysis and the quantitative link to microscopic, molecular structure and mobility. Reversible and irreversible thermodynamics, kinetics, quantum mechanics, and statistical thermodynamics are the roots of the described thermal analysis. The book aims to broaden readers’ understanding of materials and the connection of flexible macromolecules (polymers) to small molecules and rigid macromolecules (minerals, salts, and metals). An effort is made to discover how the long, flexible molecules fit into their small phases which are characterized as microphases or nanophases. Their order ranges from amorphous to mesophase-like and crystalline. Ultimately, it is shown that the basic structure-property-processing triangle is connected to the better-known types of molecules and their common macroscopic phases.

I was disappointed with the content of the book. It is largely about the history and general principles. It did not get into methodology or details about polymers themselves. It may be good for the classroom, but is lacking for industry use.

          Book Description

Relating Materials Properties to Structure: Handbook and Software for Polymer Calculations and Materials Properties lays the foundation for an understanding of the basic structure of materials and the significant distinguishing features between major classes. It provides a method of comparison between the structure of different classes of materials and their attendant properties. The structural differences between individual polymers and the resultant properties are a primary focus, since this is the only class of materials where data and techniques allow properties to be estimated. This book and CD-ROM software package provides an easy, straightforward technique for estimating polymer properties via simple software. The software permits the user to see the effects of changing a structure, and to estimate the properties of a polymer that might be unavailable or very time-consuming to find. The ability of the software to estimate the miscibility of various polymer blends is one of its most valuable aspects. While most methods that are extremely easy make simplifying assumptions that adversely affect accuracy, in this case, the inaccuracies introduced do not obviate the usefulness of the software or techniques. Relating Materials Properties to Structure: Handbook and Software for Polymer Calculations and Materials Properties Software offers the most comprehensive system presently available. Invaluable to all involved in fundamental polymer research, new product polymer alloy development, investigating polymer/plasticizer miscibility, and those involved in designing and specifying polymeric materials required to meet mechanical, physical, thermal, electrical and blending properties.

                Book Description

The rise in the production and use of polymers as everyday materials has for the most part been due to advances in polymers synthesis allowing the manufacture of huge range of materials suitable for many different applications. The current and potential applications of ion-containing polymers or ionomers are many and varied. One of the most well-established of these is the use of perfluorinated ionomers as members in chlor-alkali cells. Ionic interactions may also be used to modify the properties of thermoplastics, as in the case of the well-known Surlyn materials which are widely used in packaging applications. Other current applications of ionomers include their use as thermoplastic elastomers blend compatibilizers and fluid additives such as dispersants.
For every existing application, there are a great many potential applications that have yet to be exploited and with the tremendous explosion in ionomer research and applications, the time has arrived for a concise and authoritative account of the field.
This book written by a team of industrial and academic researchers, is directed at polymer scientists and chemical engineers.

                    Book Description

The remarkable achievements that modern science has made in physics, chemistry, biology, medicine, and engineering contrast sharply with our limited knowledge of the human mind and behavior. A major reason for this slow progress, claims Gary Cziko, is that with few exceptions, behavioral and cognitive scientists continue to apply a Newtonian-inspired view of animate behavior as an organism's output determined by environmental input. This one-way cause-effect approach ignores the important findings of two major nineteenth-century biologists, French physiologist Claude Bernard and English naturalist Charles Darwin.

Approaching living organisms as purposeful systems that behave in order to control their perceptions of the external environment provides a new perspective for understanding what, why, and how living things, including humans, do what they do. Cziko examines in particular perceptual control theory, which has its roots in Bernard's work on the self-regulating nature of living organisms and in the work of engineers who developed the field of cybernetics during and after World War II. He also shows how our evolutionary past together with Darwinian processes currently occurring within our bodies, such as the evolution of new brain connections, provide insights into the immediate and ultimate causes of behavior.

Writing in an accessible style, Cziko shows how the lessons of Bernard and Darwin, updated with the best of current scientific knowledge, can provide solutions to certain long-standing theoretical and practical problems in behavioral science and enable us to develop new methods and topics for research.

I have only read about the first third of this book, so this review is only temporary. But if somebody stumbles into this page, then I want you know without delay that Gary Cziko is an authentically kind and intelligent researcher into the problem of what's going on with human behavior.

His book "Without Miracles" established his credibility with me. And I am extremely pleased to be able to benefit from his informed investigations into why I find myself doing things that otherwise mystify me.

Pointing me in the direction of internal reference levels has cleared away much of the fog that defied logical analysis with regard to examining the subject of motivating human purposes.

Thank you Gary!! I will flesh this review out when I finish reading your work.

                    5 out of 5 stars A Thoughtful Classic.......2001-07-31

Prof. Hodge was arguably America's most respected theologian for most of his 56 years teaching at Princeton Theological Seminary. This was laregly due to how he was able to apply his keen insights to such a wide number of cultural interests. Dr. Hodge had his fingers on the pulse of politics, the arts, literature and history. After theology his greatest interest was in science. He enjoyed lively debate and had strong opinions, but he was always fair and gracious to his opponents. Folks often disagreed with Hodge's conclusions, but they always knew he was going to summarized the subject at hand lucidly and insightfully.

This book is chiefly known for its conclusion, *What is Darwinism? It is atheism.* This is unfortunate. He only condemns Darwinism after he has spent more than 100 pages closely defining it. It is not all change that he condemns, or even evolution, but a particular species of evolution -- naturalistic Darwinism.

Hodge rarely made hasty judgments. He wa sone of the first theologians to comment on Darwin's The Origin of Species (1859) in print -- 1861. Hodge spent many years studying all aspects of the theory. He identifies its strengths as well as its philosophical inconsistencies.

This book is of great value not only to those interested in theology and 19th century history and culture, but also to those interested in the contemporary debates over the merits of Neo-Darwinism (Hodge would have surely been fascinated by the exciting new Intelligent Design [ID] theorists -- like William Dembski, Jonathan Wells, Hugh Ross, Michael Behe, etc.).

First published in 1874. 190 pages. As applied to man, Darwin's theory of the struggle for existence, and survival of the fittest is nothing less than the basest and most horrible of superstitions. It makes man not merely carnal but devilish. It takes his lowest appetites and propensities, and makes them his God and Creator. His higher sentiments and aspirations, his self-denying philanthropy, his enthusiasm for the good and true, all the struggles and sufferings of heroes and martyrs, not to speak of that self-sacrifice which is the foundation of Christianity, are, in the view of the evolutionist, mere failure in the struggle of life. What does he give us in exchange? An endless pedigree of bestial ancestors, without one gleam of high and holy tradition to enliven the procession; and for the future, the prospect that the poor mass of protoplasm, which constitutes the sum of our being, and which is the sole gain of an indefinite struggle in the past, must soon be resolved again into inferior animals or dead matter. That men of thought and culture should advocate such a philosophy, argues either a strange mental hallucination, or that the higher spiritual nature has been wholly quenched within them. It is one of the saddest of many sad spectacles which our age presents.
