Handbook of Phosphorus-31 Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Data
Manufacturer: CRC Press ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0849335310 |
Book Description
To fully utilize Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, a comprehensive and well-organized compilation of NMR data is necessary. While compilations have been available for other important NMR nuclei, such as carbon and fluorine, no comprehensive collection of data has been prepared for phosphorus-until now. The CRC Handbook of Phosphorus-31 Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Data provides a collection of 31P NMR chemical shifts for nearly 20,000 organic and inorganic phosphorus compounds. Each class of phosphorus compound is discussed. Bond types, stereochemistry (with the exception of metal complexes), media, important coupling constants, and data sources are included. The information is systematically organized according to coordination state, the atoms bound to phosphorus, and their connectivities. A comprehensive series of bar charts is also included to allow structure types to be assigned to chemical shift data. This handbook is an invaluable resource for all scientists working with phosphorus compounds, including chemists, biochemists, medical researchers, and pharmaceutical chemists.

Modeling Phosphorus in the Environment
Manufacturer: CRC ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 0849337771 |
Book Description
Despite advances in modeling, such as graphical user interfaces, the use of GIS layers, and databases for developing input files, the approaches to modeling phosphorus (P) have not changed since their initial development in the 1980s. Current understanding of P processes has evolved and this new information needs to be incorporated into the current models. Filling this need, Modeling Phosphorus in the Environment describes basic approaches to modeling P, how the current models implement these approaches, and ways to improve them. The book sets the scene with a review of general approaches to modeling runoff and erosion, P in runoff, leaching of P, stream processes that affect P, and an examination of the important issue of model uncertainty. It describes state-of-the-science watershed-scale P transport models including dynamic semi-disturbed models, models of intermediate complexity, and two lumped models. Phosphorus Indexes (PIs) represent one end of the modeling spectrum and the book takes a comprehensive look at PIs developed in each state, and illustrates some of the problems encountered when incorporating PIs into farm-scale manure management software. The book discusses monitoring data, which is critical for calibrating models, and concludes with suggestions for improving the modeling of P. From researching mechanisms to applying regulations, the uses of phosphorus models have increased as our knowledge of the effects of phosphorus in the environment has increased. Drawing on contributions from experts, the book gives you the tools to select the model that best fits your needs.

From alchemy to soap powder........2002-11-24
Products such as pesticides, incendiaries, smoke screens and nerve gas show its aggressive uses, while other chapters show the benefits of fertilizers, preservatives and detergents.
On a side-track, phosphorus's involvement in spontaneous human combustion is investigated - also explaining will o'wisps and graveyard apparitions.
Immensely readable and crammed full of facts and figures, I recommend this as a welcome addition to any amateur science historian's library. *****
An Entire Book About one Element?.......2002-06-21
Emsley has created a thoroughly engrossing tale of the discovery and use of one of the more common elements on our planet as well as being able to include a sizable amount of solid scientific information in a thoroughly engrossing form. Other reviewers have outlined in some detail the contents of this book but let me emphasize that the "science" never gets in the way of the narrative. Anyone who has even a passing interest in natural science should find this book an excellent read. I purchased this book in hardback form some time ago but have given a couple of the paperback copies away to friends and have not gotten a negative response yet.

Water Residuals to Reduce Soil Phosphorous (Awwa Research Foundation Reports) (Awwa Research Foundation Reports)
James DeWolfe Manufacturer: Amer Water Works Assn ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 1583214275 |
Book Description
The goal of the co-sponsoring utilities (Pennsylvania American Water Company, Tulsa Metropolitan Utility Authority, and Denver Water), , is to exploit the unique characteristics of WTR for beneficial use. Specifically, the targeted beneficial use is improved P management of agricultural lands by controlling the release of P. The mechanism for this approach is to use metal hydroxides present in WTR to bind P in agricultural soils that have high P levels. The differences in WTRs observed during this research support the recommendation that utilities characterize their WTRs on a seasonal basis due to changes in source water quality or the required level of pretreatment chemicals. Further, utilities that are considering modifying WTR management programs for greater capacity should include the enhanced ability of liquid WTR to bind P as a selection factor. Numerous suggestions for further research are provided.

The 2007 Import and Export Market for Nonalloyed Pig Iron in Primary Forms with Less Than 0.50% Phosphorus by Weight in Belgium
Parker, Philip M. Manufacturer: ICON Group International, Inc. ProductGroup: Book Binding: Paperback ASIN: 0546186262 Release Date: 2006-11-21 |
Book Description
On the demand side, exporters and strategic planners focusing on nonalloyed pig iron in primary forms with less than 0.50% phosphorus by weight in Belgium face a number of questions. Which countries are supplying nonalloyed pig iron in primary forms with less than 0.50% phosphorus by weight to Belgium? How important is Belgium compared to others in terms of the entire global and regional market? How much do the imports of nonalloyed pig iron in primary forms with less than 0.50% phosphorus by weight vary from one country of origin to another in Belgium? On the supply side, Belgium also exports nonalloyed pig iron in primary forms with less than 0.50% phosphorus by weight. Which countries receive the most exports from Belgium? How are these exports concentrated across buyers? What is the value of these exports and which countries are the largest buyers? This report was created for strategic planners, international marketing executives and import/export managers who are concerned with the market for nonalloyed pig iron in primary forms with less than 0.50% phosphorus by weight in Belgium. With the globalization of this market, managers can no longer be contented with a local view. Nor can managers be contented with out-of-date statistics which appear several years after the fact. I have developed a methodology, based on macroeconomic and trade models, to estimate the market for nonalloyed pig iron in primary forms with less than 0.50% phosphorus by weight for those countries serving Belgium via exports, or supplying from Belgium via imports. It does so for the current year based on a variety of key historical indicators and econometric models. In what follows, Chapter 2 begins by summarizing where Belgium fits into the world market for imported and exported nonalloyed pig iron in primary forms with less than 0.50% phosphorus by weight. The total level of imports and exports on a worldwide basis, and those for Belgium in particular, is estimated using a model which aggregates across over 150 key country markets and projects these to the current year. From there, each country represents a percent of the world market. This market is served from a number of competitive countries of origin. Based on both demand- and supply-side dynamics, market shares by country of origin are then calculated across each country market destination. These shares lead to a volume of import and export values for each country and are aggregated to regional and world totals. In doing so, we are able to obtain maximum likelihood estimates of both the value of each market and the share that Belgium is likely to receive this year. From these figures, rankings are calculated to allow managers to prioritize Belgium compared to other major country markets. In this way, all the figures provided in this report are forecasts that can be combined with internal information sources for strategic planning purposes.

Darwin on rye, hold the pickles.......2003-07-03
This cute little book is completely disarming. It mixes comic book style sketches with random photos and odd bits of clip-art, jumbles various typefaces, including one that looks as if came from a typewriter in need of repair, and is printed on the type of recycled-looking paper that you might wrap a large parcel with. It's thoroughly self-effacing. Yet--and here's the clincher--its little blurbs are actually informative and accurate; each one is short (often no more than a few sentences) and fun to read.
Each blurb covers some little topic that is in some way relevant to the theory of evolution: DNA, genetics, vestigial organs, mutations, Darwin, the difference between a hypothesis and a theory, the evolution of behavior, the formation of fossils, and even a few good-natured jabs at creationists (one sports a tiny illustration of a newspaper with the headline "Breaking News. Darwin was WRONG!").
I'm not sure who the intended audience of this book was, but I suspect that quite a few people would enjoy it; especially those with a streak of irreverence. But you definitely can't take this book too seriously. It's something you could keep in the bathroom, or by the pool. If it gets wet, Oh well. If for some reason you're in the market for a completely disarming and unpretentious little book on evolution, then here you go. It might make a good stocking stuffer (it's actually the right shape). Enjoy.
Great anecdotal book on Evolution.......2000-11-27
The book was "pretty" to look at and was very artistically pleasing with line drawings on brown (grocery bag) type paper... The sections read as small paragraphs over the pages. I would not recommend this book for someone wanting to get a long explanation of evolution topics, However if you are looking for some historical tidbits, this is great.
For another great overview with pictures.. Try the book Eyewitness Science: Evolution by Linda Gamlin.
