Book Description
Noble Metals and Biological Systems examines the relationship between noble metals (gold, silver, and platinum group metals) and biological systems. The book is divided into three parts. Part 1 is concerned with the analytical chemistry of noble metals and includes a description of the latest methods of analysis. Part 2 describes such topics as ecology and environmental science of noble metals as they pertain to biogeochemical exploration, noble metals in hair, the environmental geochemistry of palladium, microorganisms and noble metals, animals and noble metals, and a general survey of noble metals in the environment. Coverage is comprehensive and includes information regarding the use of dogs and termites as field assistants in mineral prospecting, as well as the fascinating story of the "gold bug", a microorganism that plates itself with gold. Part 3 is devoted entirely to noble metals in the treatment of disease and includes chapters describing the use of osmium and gold for arthritis treatment, silver as a bactericide, and platinum and ruthenium as anticancer agents. Noble Metals and Biological Systems will provide fascinating reading for applied geochemists, environmentalists, public health specialists, ecologists, microbiologists, clinical biochemists, oncologists, and specialists in rheumatic diseases.

Book Description
Subsequent to the profiling of organometal(loid) compounds in important biogeogenic and anthropogenic deposits, the importance of this class of compounds for human health are evaluated by the analysis of both physicochemical and biological formation, distribution and transformation processes. Multidisciplinary articles written by experts from disciplines as diverse as biogeochemistry, ecotoxicology, analytical chemistry, microbiology and genetics estimate the global levels of biogeogenic and anthropogenic emissions of organometal(loid) compounds, and thus obtain an insight to processes which influence the genesis, as well as the distribution and stability of organometal(loid) species and their interaction with each other and other matrix compounds. The authors evaluate various environmentally relevant sources from a toxicological point of view, in order to identify potential "hot spots" of organometal(loid)s, which can negatively influence ecosystems and human health.

- Includes general developments in analytical techniques.
- Discusses several minority elements including antimony and selenium.
The book addresses the subject in a single, manageable size and each chapter can be used either as a single review or sequentially within the topic area. A useful resource for all researchers and scientists in industry working with organometallic compounds, including, chemists, environmentalists and ecologists.
Download Description
"This completely revised and updated second edition of Organometallic Compounds in the Environment treats environmental organometallic chemistry as an integrated and coherent subject area in its own right, bringing together contributions from leading scientists throughout the world. The Introduction summarizes and explores those properties of organometallic compounds that are relevant to their behaviour and impact in the natural environment. Subsequent chapters cover those elements whose organometallic derivatives are especially important in the environmental context. The natural formation of organometallics from inorganic precursors under environmental conditions is also treated in detail. An important underlying theme running through the work is the biological properties and toxicities of the organometallic species present in the environment. In general a full speciation approach is taken, where the full molecular identities of the compounds concerned are considered. Research workers in the fields of organometallic compounds and their environmental impact, as well as those interested in organometallic and environmental chemistry generally, will welcome this new edition. It will also be invaluable as a source book to lecturers teaching courses at undergraduate or graduate level in applied, analytical, industrial, organometallic or environmental chemistry, or in environmental science in general."

Book Description
The possible importance of volatile alkyl and hydride derivates in environmental processes has only begun to be explored, and the literature on these compounds (especially the alkyls), while substantial, is widely diffused through many professional journals. This book will provide a critical, concise review on these compounds and will point out future possibilities and needs. It should appeal to environmental scientists, geochemists, toxicologists and persons interested in waste receycling.
Customer Reviews:
Not a lot to it, but what do you expect for the price?.......2002-06-15
The guide has a minimum of information on petroglyphs, and I'm not sure that there is much here that will really be useful in the field. It contains more of an overview of what petroglyphs are, and a VERY sketchy view of different categories (different cultures, different methods of making petroglyphs, etc.). I kept being reminded of something I might have been given as a handout in elementary school.
I have two criticisms, one is that I don't really see much information here that will be useful in the field. The other is that the guide is printed on medium-quality paper, and with no plasticizing or water-proofing at all. It will quickly disintegrate when taken into the field, unless you take strong measures to protect it from moisture, dirt, and rough handling. I just don't see much use for it, even at this very low price.
Excellent Quick Source.......2000-05-03
Elizabeth Welsh provides an instructive quick overview ofpetroglyphs and pictographs. Within the the 32 pages of text the bookprovides the bare fundamentals of recoginizing, appreciating andpreserving different forms of southwestern United States rock art. The wallet sized book (lighter than pair of sunglasses) is a must for the day hiker or amatuer acrhaeologist.
Customer Reviews:
You get what you pay for.......2003-04-23
This volume is a nice way to start getting interested in Native American rock symbols that can be found in the southwest. It's a convenient size for hiking trips, or just to carry around if you live in the region. But it's also small enough to lose in a pile of matches. It's slightly informative, you must remember that not a lot is actually known about the meaning of the rock symbols, and this volume is not the defining one when it comes to the intricacies of reading rock symbols. It is enough to get the basics down. There are better works out there for the serious enthusiast, but if you're just trying to enjoy a vacation more, then yeah, get this and throw it in your pocket.
Great Little Primer on Petroglyphs.......2001-08-19
This is an easy to digest beginners book on rock art of the Four Corners States (Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico and Utah). It is small enough to tuck in a backpack or jacket pocket to take along on your hike. The illustrations of the petroglyphs are bold and clear. Between the well written background information and the wonderful drawings this little 32 page book is a must for anyone who wants to begin to gain insight on the rock symbols that the ancient peoples have left behind.

What's a dinosaur watcher to do? Where do you go to find creatures that have been dead for 65 million years, and how do you know them when you see them?
If you're a bird watcher, you get a field guide to the birds. Now dinosaur watchers can get their own field guide, a just-bigger-than-pocket-size encyclopedia of dinosaur science. The text is clear, objective, up-to-date, and dense with information, containing sections on every aspect of dinosaur discovery and biology.
The heart of Dinosaurs is the guide. Each page in this section has an artist's portrait of an interesting dinosaur, tells how its name is pronounced and what it means, tells where and when it lived, and describes the animal's discovery and lifestyle. Most helpfully, it also lists museums where the fossils can be seen, and it does not confine itself to North America: London, Paris, Cape Town, Beijing, Melbourne, and Ulan Bator get noticed, too.
The book also has descriptions of some of the world's major dinosaur museums and field sites. Even if you can't make it to the Flaming Cliffs of Mongolia this year, you can learn why it might be worth the trip. --Mary Ellen Curtin
Book Description
Take a journey back in time to a land filled with dinosaurs- and don't leave without this full-color, information-packed guide to the dinosaurs' world. The field guide section provides a species-by-species portrait of individual dinosaurs and the sites in which they were found. Also includes practical advice about where to see and find dinosaur remains.
Customer Reviews:
Great Pictures and Paintings!.......2001-09-29
Half of this book is about famous paleontologists, what dinosaurs are, and how they became extinct. The next half has at least 80 pictures and paintings of different species of dinosaurs, and a description of their characteristics and how they live. I would especially recommend it to 11 and 12 year olds who know their dinosaurs. WARNING: This is not a little kid's book. It does contain A LOT of information. It has at least a page on each species of dinosaur, but I think it should go into even more detail on these amazing animals.
