Book Description
In the past three decades, local search has grown from a simple heuristic idea into a mature field of research in combinatorial optimization that is attracting ever-increasing attention. Local search is still the method of choice for NP-hard problems as it provides a robust approach for obtaining high-quality solutions to problems of a realistic size in reasonable time. Local Search in Combinatorial Optimization covers local search and its variants from both a theoretical and practical point of view, each topic discussed by a leading authority. This book is an important reference and invaluable source of inspiration for students and researchers in discrete mathematics, computer science, operations research, industrial engineering, and management science.
In addition to the editors, the contributors are Mihalis Yannakakis, Craig A. Tovey, Jan H. M. Korst, Peter J. Customer Reviews:
Not Good as a Textbook or Study Reference.......2007-02-20
I bought this book for a graduate course. Despite the applause I see in the back cover, it is not so good as a textbook. It might be good if you are well-versed in the lexicon of optimization and optimization is your main area, then I think this book is good to understand the quantitative as well as the qualitative dimensions of each technique. For a novice researcher or student in the field, this is not the right book.

Combinatorial Optimization: Algorithms and Complexity
ASIN: 0262220776 |
Book Description
The ubiquity of combinatorial optimization problems in our society is illustrated by the novel application areas for optimization technology, which range from supply chain management to sports tournament scheduling. Over the last two decades, constraint programming has emerged as a fundamental methodology to solve a variety of combinatorial problems, and rich constraint programming languages have been developed for expressing and combining constraints and specifying search procedures at a high level of abstraction. Local search approaches to combinatorial optimization are able to isolate optimal or near-optimal solutions within reasonable time constraints.
This book introduces a method for solving combinatorial optimization problems that combines constraint programming and local search, using constraints to describe and control local search, and a programming language, COMET, that supports both modeling and search abstractions in the spirit of constraint programming.
After an overview of local search including neighborhoods, heuristics, and metaheuristics, the book presents the architecture and modeling and search components of constraint-based local search and describes how constraint-based local search is supported in COMET. The book describes a variety of applications, arranged by meta-heuristics. It presents scheduling applications, along with the background necessary to understand these challenging problems. The book also includes a number of satisfiability problems, illustrating the ability of constraint-based local search approaches to cope with both satisfiability and optimization problems in a uniform fashion.

Book Description
Integer Optimization addresses a wide spectrum of practically important optimization problems and represents a major challenge for algorithmics. The goal of integer optimization is to solve a system of constraints and optimization criteria over discrete variables.Integer Optimization by Local Search introduces a new approach to domain-independent integer optimization, which, unlike traditional strategies, is based on local search. It develops the central concepts and strategies of integer local search and describes possible combinations with classical methods from linear programming. The surprising effectiveness of the approach is demonstrated in a variety of case studies on large-scale, realistic problems, including production planning, timetabling, radar surveillance, and sports scheduling. The monograph is written for practitioners and researchers from artificial intelligence and operations research.

Book Description
Meta-Heuristics: Advances and Trends in Local Search Paradigms for Optimizations comprises a carefully refereed selection of extended versions of the best papers presented at the Second Meta-Heuristics Conference (MIC 97). The selected articles describe the most recent developments in theory and applications of meta-heuristics, heuristics for specific problems, and comparative case studies. The book is divided into six parts, grouped mainly by the techniques considered. The extensive first part with twelve papers covers tabu search and its application to a great variety of well-known combinatorial optimization problems (including the resource-constrained project scheduling problem and vehicle routing problems). In the second part we find one paper where tabu search and simulated annealing are investigated comparatively and two papers which consider hybrid methods combining tabu search with genetic algorithms. The third part has four papers on genetic and evolutionary algorithms. Part four arrives at a new paradigm within meta-heuristics. The fifth part studies the behavior of parallel local search algorithms mainly from a tabu search perspective. The final part examines a great variety of additional meta-heuristics topics, including neural networks and variable neighbourhood search as well as guided local search. Furthermore, the integration of meta-heuristics with the branch-and-bound paradigm is investigated.

Decision Support.......2000-11-16
Once one has read the articles in this book it becomes clear that meta-heuristics are intelligently designed methods to provide decision makers with tools for decision support. Each chapter is self-contained and provides different insights into specific methods (especially genetic algorithms, neural networks, tabu search, simulated annealing). These methods are well explored and explained by means of theoretical as well as practical results, e.g., for vehicle routing or mail delivery or generalized assignment. Ideas on how to implement the methods are also provided. Most papers are easy to read with only some preliminaries in mathematics (or combinatorial optimization). The chapters are carefully collected and could have been accepted for high-quality journals as well. Well done.
this book must be good@.......1999-10-12
i have no idea what it is avbout, but it looks really cool from the name and totally confusing nature of it.

Book Description
Multiobjective Combinatorial Optimization Problems (MCOPs) arise in many real-life applications and they are among the hardest optimization problems. Therefore, high-quality approximations that can be obtained in reasonable time are, in practice, preferable to the often infeasible long computation times required for finding the optimum. Stochastic Local Search (SLS) algorithms were shown to give state-of-the-art results for many other problems, but little is known on how to design and analyse them for MCOPs. The main purpose of this book is to fill this gap. We start by defining two search models that correspond to two distinct ways of tackling MCOPs by SLS algorithms. Notions of local optima for MCOPs are formally introduced and related to the typical outcome of SLS algorithms. Moreover, we present a systematic approach for the design of these algorithms based on the notion of SLS components and a general guideline to empirically analyse algorithm performance. Finally, several SLS algorithms and SLS components are tested on the Multiobjective Traveling Salesman Problem and the Multiobjective Quadratic Assignment Problem. The effect of instance features and SLS components on the performance of the SLS algorithms are identified by experimental design techniques. The results obtained clearly indicate that the best performing variants are new state-of-the-art algorithms.

Book Description
Local search has been applied successfully to a diverse collection of optimization problems. It's appreciated for its basic conceptual foundation, its general applicability, and its power to serve as a source for new search paradigms. The typical characteristics of combinatorial optimization problems to which local search can be applied, its relation to complexity theory, and the combination with randomized search features have led to a wealth of interesting theoretical results. However, these results are scattered throughout the literature.
This is the first book that presents a large collection of theoretical results in a consistent manner, thus providing the reader with a coherent overview of the achievements obtained so far, but also serving as a source of inspiration for the development of novel results in the challenging field of local search.

Description:
The probabilistic traveling salesman problem is a well known problem that is quite challenging to solve. It involves finding the tour with the lowest expected cost for customers that will require a visit with a given probability. There are several proposed algorithms for the homogeneous version of the problem, where all customers have identical probability of being realized. From the literature, the most successful approaches involve local search procedures, with the most famous being the 2-p-opt and 1-shift procedures proposed by Bertsimas [D.J. Bertsimas, L. Howell, Further results on the probabilistic traveling salesman problem, European Journal of Operational Research 65 (1) (1993) 68-95]. Recently, however, evidence has emerged that indicates the equations offered for these procedures are not correct, and even when corrected, the translation to the heterogeneous version of the problem is not simple. In this paper we extend the analysis and correction to the heterogeneous case. We derive new expressions for computing the cost of 2-p-opt and 1-shift local search moves, and we show that the neighborhood of a solution may be explored in O(n^2) time, the same as for the homogeneous case, instead of O(n^3) as first reported in the literature.
