Book Description
Functional imaging tools such as fMRI (functional magnetic resonance imaging), PET (positron emission tomography), EEG (electro-encephalogram), and MEG (magneto-encephalogram) allow researchers to record activity in the working brain and draw inferences about how the brain functions. This book provides a survey of theoretical and computational approaches to neuroimaging, including inferential, exploratory, and causal methods of data analysis; theories of cerebral function; and biophysical and computational models of neural nets. It also emphasizes the close relationships between different approaches, for example, between causal data analysis and biophysical modeling, and between functional theories and computational models.

Book Description
NMR DATA PROCESSING
Jeffrey C. Hoch and Alan S. Stern
Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) spectroscopy is a powerful nondestructive technique for exploring the structure of matter. In recent years, NMR instrumentation has become increasingly sophisticated, and the software used to acquire and process NMR data continues to expand in scope and complexity. This software has always been difficult to understand, and, until now, it seemed likely to remain that way.
NMR Data Processing examines and explains the techniques used to process, present, and analyze NMR data. It provides a complete account of the fundamentals of spectrum analysis and establishes a framework for applying those fundamentals to real NMR data. It also details, in clear and concise language, the basic principles underlying the complex software needed to analyze the data.
Two chapters are devoted to the fundamentals and applications of discrete Fourier transform (DFT) in NMR, which was crucial to the development of modern NMR spectroscopy. A large part of the book focuses on increasingly important non-DFT methods, which obtain higher sensitivity and resolution. Other topics covered include:
* Data formats
* Processing for multidimensional experiments
* Parametric modeling of NMR signals
* Standard techniques-apodization, zero-filling, the Hilbert transform
* Artifacts-aliasing, leakage, solvent signals
* Advanced processing techniques-LP, MaxEnt, Bayesian analysis
Jeffrey C. Hoch and Alan S. Stern conclude their in-depth look at this rapidly growing field by exploring methods for analyzing processed data, including visualization, quantification, and error analysis. Readers are provided with a solid foundation for developing new methods of their own.
NMR Data Processing is an important tool for students learning basic principles for the first time, technicians troubleshooting data processing problems, and professional researchers developing new techniques. It will help all NMR users acquire a true grasp of the methods behind the process, avoid the pitfalls of misapplication and misinterpretation, and exploit the full power of NMR software.
Customer Reviews:
Great introduction.......2007-01-30
Starting with the essentials of Fourier Transform theory, this great book takes you through an enjoyable tour of modern methods of spectral analysis in NMR, highlighting the most relevant techniques with clarity in what could otherwise become a confusing array of acronyms. The book does not hesitate to invoke mathematical formulas where necessary to explain the function of the methods, but does so in the gentle style that makes the classic Numerical Recipes books so pleasant to read. Hoch and Stern have had ample experience in the field of modern spectrum analysis. Although the authors try to assist the newbie in the selection of appropriate techniques, a lot of questions still remain as to which is the optimal method for a particular problem, and a conclusion to be drawn from this book, as from the literature in general, is that some experimentation with numerical techniques is often required before the "best" method is hit upon. Unfortunately the book has aged and is ready for a second edition as new concepts such as GFT make their way into the mainstream.

Book Description
Signal analysis and signal treatment are integral parts of all types of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance. In the last ten years, much has been achieved in the development of dimensional spectra. At the same time new NMR techniques such as NMR Imaging and multidimensional spectroscopy have appeared, requiring entirely new methods of signal analysis. Up until now, most NMR texts and reference books limited their presentation of signal processing to a short introduction to the principles of the Fourier Transform, signal convolution, apodisation and noise reduction. To understand the mathematics of the newer signal processing techniques, it was necessary to go back to the primary references in NMR, chemometrics and mathematics journals.
The objective of this book is to fill this void by presenting, in a single volume, both the theory and applications of most of these new techniques to Time-Domain, Frequency-Domain and Space-Domain NMR signals. Details are provided on many of the algorithms used and a companion CD-ROM is also included which contains some of the computer programs, either as source code or in executable form. Although it is aimed primarily at NMR users in the medical, industrial and academic fields, it should also interest chemometricians and programmers working with other techniques.

Customer Reviews:
Molecular Biology of the Gene.......2002-10-25
Molecular Biology of the Gene written by James D. Watson is one of the best texts on biology of the molecular level. With ample illustrations this makes a wonderful text for students and those who want to learn more about the primary structures of proteins and the interplay between them.
Molecular genetics is but one part of the whole of biology, the nature of cells and how they divide, but this book makes an attempt to address both in a seemless fashion. Genetic code, the replication of viruses and the control of protein synthesis are all a part of this book.
I found the narrative to be straight forward and very understandable as the author makes the point in a logical and lucid manor. You will need some schooling in the biological sciences as this is not a book for the novice. This text will give the biologist of the future the rigor, the perspective, and the enthusiasm that will be needed to bridge the gap between the single cell and the complexities of higher organisms.
This is an excellent text.
Clear, Concise and Comprehensive!.......2000-01-08
This book gives a better understanding and representation of recombinant DNA procedures. All topics relevant to Molecular Biology of the Gene has been addressed in a lucid manner with excellent description and illustrations. A lot of progress had been made in this field hence. But this is a must buy for students as well as educators of molecular biology.
Book Description
Cytogenetics is concerned with matching inherited traits with the appearance, structure, and behavior of chromosomes. The first volume, Human Cytogenetics: Constitutional Analysis, covers all aspects of basic human cytogenetic study other than malignancies and acquired abnormalities. The
second volume, Human Cytogenetics: Malignant and Acquired Abnormalities, describes the techniques used to study how chromosomal rearrangements can cause malignancies.
Book Description
A collection of key cytogenetic and FISH techniques used by modern clinical laboratories in the genetic analysis of human malignancies. The book's practical advice and methods are suitable for use at every level of expertise, including fully established laboratories, but with a sympathetic bias towards anyone considering setting up a new cytogenetics service. Here the reader will find not only elementary tutorials on the fundamentals of human karyotypes and chromosome analysis, but also detailed discussions on how laboratories may optimally upgrade their repertoire of capabilities to include such newer complementary techniques as CGH, FISH, and M-FISH.
Book Description
Studies of the cells and genes of the nematode C. elegans have become a cornerstone of current biology. A classic 1988 Cold Spring Harbor monograph, The Nematode Caenorhabditis elegans, described the basic genetics, anatomy and development of the organism. Now, in that authoritative tradition, comes C. elegans II -- not a second edition but a book that breaks new ground and defines the current status of the field, providing a detailed molecular explanation of how development is regulated and the nervous system specifies varied aspects of behavior. This volume is a must for any investigator doing worm studies but it has been written and rigorously edited to illuminate for a wider community of investigators in cell and molecular biology who should know how new knowledge of C. elegans relates to their own specialty.
