      Book Description

This development of the theory of complex algebraic curves was one of the peaks of nineteenth century mathematics. They have many fascinating properties and arise in various areas of mathematics, from number theory to theoretical physics, and are the subject of much research. By using only the basic techniques acquired in most undergraduate courses in mathematics, Dr. Kirwan introduces the theory, observes the algebraic and topological properties of complex algebraic curves, and shows how they are related to complex analysis.

4 out of 5 stars A very nice little book.......2003-05-14

This is a very nice, short introduction to the subject -- This series of blue paperbacks by CUP is excellent. Typically, all books in the series are readable introductions. Somewhat higher level than the corresponding series from Springer (the one where all exercises have full solutions).

Incidentally, the author is a very attractive woman.

4 out of 5 stars Well suited as an introduction to algebraic curves.......2001-03-15

The book gives a good general overview of algebraic curves using only elementary algebra, topology, and complex analysis. There are lots of diagrams of elliptic curves in the historical introduction in the first chapter and the subject is well motivated. Hilbert's Nullstellensatz is introduced in the context of real algebraic curves as an answer to the question of when the polynomials definte the same curve. The visualization approach taken by the author in the first chapter has taken on dramatic proportions do to the computer graphics packages currently available. The author introduces complex algebraic curves in complex 2-dimensional space in the next chapter. Recognizing that such curves are not compact, he compactifies them by adding suitable points at infinity, giving complex projective curves. The algebraic properties of these curves are studied in the next chapter. He does a good job of motivating the group law on elliptic curves on the last theorem of the chapter, leaving the proof of associativity to the reader in the exercises. The topology of complex projective curves is taken up in Chapter 4. The author gives two proofs of the degree-genus formula, one geometric and the other from a holomorphic point of view. This leads to a consideration of branch points and ramified covers. The author's outline of the proofs is very detailed and therefore very helpful to one encountering the proof for the first time. The statement of the formula via the Riemann-Roch theorem in more formal treatments (and later in the book) can then be appreciated more. The subject of non-singular complex projective curves, namely Riemann surfaces, is effectively discussed in Chapter 5, with holomorphic differentials outlined in Chapter 6. The Riemann-Roch theorem makes its appearance here, and the author is careful to point out its use as an alternative characterization of the genus given earlier by topological arguments. Divisors are introduced as formal sums, but their understanding is straightforward here because the author has motivated them with a discussion of the properties of holomorphic and meromorphic functions earlier in the chapter. The proof of the Riemann-Roch theorem is very detailed and understandable. The book ends with a discussion of singular curves via resolution of singularities. Newton polygons and Puiseux expansions are used to investigate the behavior of degree d projective curves near a singular point. The geometrical constructions used here by the author are of great help in understanding the behavior of these curves. A very well-written book for students and new-comers to the area of algebraic curves. It will pave the way for more advanced reading on the subject.

          Book Description

Singularity theory is a field of intensive study in modern mathematics with fascinating relations to algebraic geometry, complex analysis, commutative algebra, representation theory, theory of Lie groups, topology, dynamical systems, and many more, and with numerous applications in the natural and technical sciences.

This book presents the basic singularity theory of analytic spaces, including local deformation theory, and the theory of plane curve singularities. Plane curve singularities are a classical object of study, rich of ideas and applications, which still is in the center of current research and as such provides an ideal introduction to the general theory. Deformation theory is an important technique in many branches of contemporary algebraic geometry and complex analysis. This introductory text provides the general framework of the theory while still remaining concrete.

In the first part of the book the authors develop the relevant techniques, including the Weierstraß preparation theorem, the finite coherence theorem etc., and then treat isolated hypersurface singularities, notably the finite determinacy, classification of simple singularities and topological and analytic invariants. In local deformation theory, emphasis is laid on the issues of versality, obstructions, and equisingular deformations. The book moreover contains a new treatment of equisingular deformations of plane curve singularities including a proof for the smoothness of the mu-constant stratum which is based on deformations of the parameterization. Computational aspects of the theory are discussed as well. Three appendices, including basic facts from sheaf theory, commutative algebra, and formal deformation theory, make the reading self-contained.

The material, which can be found partly in other books and partly in research articles, is presented from a unified point of view for the first time. It is given with complete proofs, new in many cases. The book thus can serve as source for special courses in singularity theory and local algebraic and analytic geometry.

            Book Description

This fine book by Herb Clemens quickly became a favorite of many complex algebraic geometers when it was first published in 1980. It has been popular with novices and experts ever since. It is written as a book of "impressions" of a journey through the theory of complex algebraic curves. Many topics of compelling beauty occur along the way. A cursory glance at the subjects visited reveals an apparently eclectic selection, from conics and cubics to theta functions, Jacobians, and questions of moduli. By the end of the book, the theme of theta functions becomes clear, culminating in the Schottky problem.

The author's intent was to motivate further study and to stimulate mathematical activity. The attentive reader will learn much about complex algebraic curves and the tools used to study them. The book can be especially useful to anyone preparing a course on the topic of complex curves or anyone interested in supplementing his/her reading.

From the reviews: "This volume... consists of two papers. The first, written by V.V. Shokurov, is devoted to the theory of Riemann surfaces and algebraic curves. It is an excellent overview of the theory of relations between Riemann surfaces and their models - complex algebraic curves in complex projective spaces. ... The second paper, written by V.I. Danilov, discusses algebraic varieties and schemes. ... I can recommend the book as a very good introduction to the basic algebraic geometry." European Mathematical Society Newsletter, 1996

                Book Description

The first contribution of this EMS volume on complex algebraic geometry touches upon many of the central problems in this vast and very active area of current research. While it is much too short to provide complete coverage of this subject, it provides a succinct summary of the areas it covers, while providing in-depth coverage of certain very important fields. The second part provides a brief and lucid introduction to the recent work on the interactions between the classical area of the geometry of complex algebraic curves and their Jacobian varieties, and partial differential equations of mathematical physics. The paper discusses the work of Mumford, Novikov, Krichever, and Shiota, and would be an excellent companion to the older classics on the subject.

                    Book Description

Given a homogeneous ideal $I$ and a monomial order, one may form the initial ideal $\textnormal{in}(I)$. The initial ideal gives information about $I$, for instance $I$ and $\textnormal{in}(I)$ have the same Hilbert function. However, if $\mathcal I$ is the sheafification of $I$ one cannot read the higher cohomological dimensions $h^i({\mathbf P}^n, \mathcal I(\nu))$ from $\textnormal{in}(I)$. This work remedies this by defining a series of higher initial ideals $\textnormal{ in}_s(I)$ for $s\geq0$. Each cohomological dimension $h^i({\mathbf P}^n, \mathcal I(\nu))$ may be read from the $\textnormal{in}_s(I)$. The $\textnormal{in}_s(I)$ are however more refined invariants and contain considerably more information about the ideal $I$.

This work considers in particular the case where $I$ is the homogeneous ideal of a curve in ${\mathbf P}^3$ and the monomial order is reverse lexicographic. Then the ordinary initial ideal $\textnormal{in}_0(I)$ and the higher initial ideal $\textnormal{in}_1(I)$ have very simple representations in the form of plane diagrams.

                    Features:

enables one to visualize cohomology of projective schemes in ${\mathbf P}^n$

provides an algebraic approach to studying projective schemes

                        Book Description

This monograph presents a comprehensive treatment of recent results on algebraic geometry as they apply to coding theory and cryptography, with the goal the study of algebraic curves and varieties with many rational points. They book surveys recent developments on abelian varieties, in particular the classification of abelian surfaces, hyperelliptic curves, modular towers, Kloosterman curves and codes, Shimura curves and modular jacobian surfaces. Applications of abelian varieties to cryptography are presented including a discussion of hyperelliptic curve cryptosystems. The inter-relationship of codes and curves is developed building on Goppa's results on algebraic-geometry cods. The volume provides a source book of examples with relationships to advanced topics regarding Sato-Tate conjectures, Eichler-Selberg trace formula, Katz-Sarnak conjectures and Hecke operators.
