Book Description

Our eyes are perhaps our most delicate and sensitive organs. They are at high risk for damage, especially from UV rays and other causes of free radical damage.

Cataracts afflict approximately 29% of Americans between 65 and 74 years of age.

Age-related macular degeneration is the most common cause of severe visual impairment in older Americans. Approximately 1.7 million have decreased vision and 100,000 are blind from the disease.

Glaucoma afflicts over 2 million and has caused blindness in 120,000 people in the United States. It is the leading cause of blindness in African-Americans.

Diabetic retinopathy is the leading cause of blindness for Americans under 60. Diabetics are 25 times more at risk for blindness than the generalpopulation.

WHAT ARE YOU DOING TO PROTECT YOUR EYES?

Bilberry and Lutein are clinically proven to help protect against, slow down the progression of and even help reverse these and other common vision disorders. Get the facts on these powerful anti-oxidant vision enhancers!

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Look elsewhere. This pub is awful........2007-09-03

Bilberry & Lutein is replete with words and phrases like "ischaemia reperfusion injury", "artiolar tone", and "vasomotion". But mostly they are not anywhere defined. Evidently the reader is supposed to dope out their meaning from context. Lotsa luck.

Again, there are sentences like, "Italian researchers also showed that bilberry anthocyanosides was beneficial against on ischaemia reperfusion injury...."
And there are facts like, "Corn is the vegetable with the highest quantity of lutein...". (According to the USDA database, spinach, kale, and various other kinds of greens contain many times as much lutein per unit weight as corn.)

I read a lot of health literature. I found Lutein & Bilberry exceedingly difficult to puzzle out, and to the extent I managed to do so, rather unreliable. It reads as though written by someone whose first language is not English, whose knowledge of the subject matter going in was zero, and whose "research" consisted of reading abstracts of journal articles and copying out sentences from them not too carefully. I find the pamphlet (at 28 pages of large-print text, it certainly is not a book) so bad that I have strong doubts about the genuineness of the three enthusiastic reviews that are standing as I write this one. Bilberry and lutein are undoubtedly good for you, but if you want the details, look elsewhere.

At the end of the pamphlet is a full-page, 30-item, list of titles (including Bilberry & Lutein), all but two by Beth Ley, offered for sale by BL Publications. For me, this author's name on any publication is sufficient reason to reject it without further consideration.

For info on the significance of Ms. Ley's "Ph. D.", see:

5 out of 5 stars Short and complete!.......2006-11-13

This book is short, yet it covers all the essential information you need regarding Bilberry and Lutein for healthy eyes.
Ley covers it all in easy to understand language. A fast read for busy readers who don't want to be short-changed on information. The title of this book is a perfect summary of its contents.

5 out of 5 stars PROTECTING OUR EYES!.......2006-10-16

This is an easy to read guide to learning about our eyes and how to safeguard our vision. This compact thirty-nine page phamplet offers insight into Macular Degeneration, Cataracts, Glaucoma, Diabetic Retinopathy, Night Blindness, "Snow" Blindness, Antioxidants, Bilberry, Lutein, and nuturing properties contained in some foods.

Author Beth M. Ley, Ph.D, has given us the first step, the basics, in helping us to help ourselves. I especially liked the chapter on foods. Spinach, collard greens, leeks, peas, kiwi fruit, zucchini, corn, grapes, kale, squash, broccoli. I knew about carrots but not the other veggies and fruits.

Author Ley includes results of studies documenting those at risk for eye damage, and emphasizes that our eyes are our most delicate and sensitive organs. Protect them.

Read the book. It is clear, informative, helpful.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent short read..........2004-09-17

This book is great. Dr. Ley explains all the details including research and scientific information. It's a short read seeing that there are less than 50 pages but the information is compact.

      Book Description

We all know that fruits and vegetables are among the healthiest foods. But relatively few people understand that the health benefits of these foods are largely the result of two families of powerful antioxidant nutrients: carotenoids and flavonoids. In this User's Guide, two leading health writers explain the health benefits of the most important dietary and supplemental carotenoids and flavonoids-and how they can help protect you against eye diseases, cancer, and cardiovascular diseases.

        Book Description

With the number of natural carotenoid structures reported rising above 700, there is a clear need for a single reference work containing data on all these compounds. This Handbook includes all natural carotenoids and common isolation artefacts for which structures have been assigned up to the end of 2001. For each compound, it provides selected key references and critically assessed information about natural occurrence and isolation, and spectroscopic data for identification. A standard full-page entry is given for each compound that has been characterised unambiguously, showing

        - Common name
        - IUPAC name
        - Structure, including stereochemistry, when assigned
        - Spectroscopic data: UV/Vis (with illustration); MS; CD; NMR (type and references)
        - Chemical synthesis (references)
        - Natural sources and outline of isolation procedure
        - Remarks, e.g. further spectroscopic data, stability, properties, derivatives
        - Selected key references

            Book Description

This book discusses in detail the effects of vitamin C, vitamin E, selenium, and beta-carotene and other caroteniods on human physiology and health. The expert panel also explores the evidence relating these substances-loosely termed dietary antioxidants-to the reduction of risk of chronic disease, including a research agenda for using biomarkers to confirm the relationship between antioxidant intake and disease.

The book explains how DRIs-which include Recommended Daily Allowance (RDA), Adequate Intake, and other measures-are derived for men and women throughout their life stages. This volume reflects several important new insights: a revised approach to estimating vitamin E requirements and a complete review of the literature to allow a determination of RDAs and upper levels (or maximum intakes) for vitamin C, vitamin E, selenium, and beta-carotene and other carotenoids. This book will be important to professionals in nutrition research and education.

4 out of 5 stars A long cry from just vitamin C........2000-08-26

Years ago it was Linus Pauling of Caltech touting the benefits of Vitamin C. Then others added the benefits of vitamin A, but be careful because one could go toxic with too much of the oil-based form. Then others came up with a plant-based form. Now, we are completely accepting of these and Passwater and Davis are bringing us into the millenium with an explanation of a whole new realm of antioxidants - their benefits, their necessity, etc. This is a good book for the beginners who want to learn more about how they can do more for themselves.

Although many aspects of carotenoid research are comprehensively covered in recent monographs, the aroma chemistry of carotenoid-derived compounds has not been explored. This volume highlights the importance that carotenoid metabolites have in the flavor and fragrance industry. It provides state-of-the-art coverage of analytical and sensory characteristics of carotenoid-derived aroma compounds. The volume includes discussion on the (bio)generation and means for biotechnological and thermal formation as well as the occurrence and generation of carotenoid-derived aroma compounds in tobacco, tear, flower scents, fruits, spices, grapes, and wine.
