From the author: Reconstituted collagen membranes (thickness 20-40 microns), used in periodontal guided tissue regeneration, were prepared by solubilization of bovine serosa and bovine tendon using an alkaline treatment and by solubilization of bovine serosa in acetic acid. Dielectric properties of these materials were determined in the frequency range of [10.sup.-5]-[10.sup.6] Hz (poling temperature = 313 K, poling time = 3 h, E = [10.sup.7] V/m), using a General Radio Bridge system (high frequencies) and a discharge current technique (low frequencies). The true pyroelectric coefficient p(T) was determined for these materials by a direct method over an appropriate temperature range. Their magnitude appear to be in the range of [10.sup.-4] to [10.sup.-5] C/[m.sup.2] [K.sup.-1], which is considerably higher than that of the ferroelectric poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) and its copolymer vinylidene fluoride-trifluorethylene (VDF-TrFE).

Customer Reviews:
Better books are out there.......2004-01-09
I have been working for a number of years teaching primatology courses, and find this text to be dead last in the list of ones I might choose to assign to my students. If one has little respect for the undergraduate students to whom one is teaching primatology, then it might be OK, but some professors take their jobs seriously. It is a bit light on science, has nice pictures with cutsey captions, and frankly shows an atypical lack of modesty for a scientist in that the author has had herself drawn as the model human in all her cladograms. Whether this book is poor because the author does not believe college students to be capable of comprehending a worthy text (like that of John Fleagle), or because she does not understand theory-driven issues herself is not clear, but in later editions more attention needs to be paid to issues scientific relevance.
More effort needed on this one before it is passable.
wonderful book for introductory primate course.......2000-09-26
I am using this book for a university level primate survey course. Though some books are now available for upper level primate behaviour and ecology courses, few of these books are accessible to beginning students, many of whom do not yet "know" they have an interest in primatology. This book is up to date, provides pertinent information on the Order Primates in a wonderful easy to read style. This information is accompanied by equally delightful drawings. Furthermore, despite her "accessible" writing style, Falk also introduces the beginning student to many of the important controversies in the study of primate behaviour and evolution.

Chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes) and bonobos (Pan paniscus), otherwise known as pygmy chimpanzees, are the only two species of the genus Pan. As they are our nearest relatives, there has been much research devoted to investigating the similarities and differences between them. This book offers an extensive review of the most recent observations to come from field studies on the diversity of Pan social behaviour, with contributions from many of the world's leading experts in this field. A wide range of social behaviours is discussed including tool use, hunting, reproductive strategies and conflict management as well as demographic variables and ecological constraints. In addition to interspecies behavioural diversity, this text describes exciting new research into variations between different populations of the same species. Researchers and students working in the fields of primatology, anthropology and zoology will find this a fascinating read.
Book Description
The great debates about human origins, cultural history, and human nature confront us with two opposing images of human beings. One view emphasizes biology, the other emphasizes culture as the foundation of human behavior. In The Chosen Primate, Adam Kuper reframes these debates and reconsiders the fundamental questions of anthropology. Balancing biological and cultural perspectives, Kuper reviews our beliefs about human origins, the history of human culture, genes and intelligence, the nature of the gender differences, and the foundations of human politics.
Customer Reviews:
A subtle, well written introduction to social anthropology.......2000-02-04
This is, without doubt, probably one of the best introductions to anthropology produced in recent years. Firstly, style: the author is witty and uncondescending. He treats the reader with respect. Secondly, content: the book is a work of synthesis but it is, simultaneosly, a work of great originality. Kuper links social anthropology to evolutionary anthropology in important and subtle ways. Recent trends in cultural anthropology - in particular the postmodern variety - have presented human beings in such a rarified way you would wonder sometimes if the planet itself was necessary for their existence. Culture has been conceived by this misguided trend as some kind of evanescent noosphere with no connection with materiality. Kuper is a wonderful antidote to this. On the other hand, his work is equally a powerful critique of the misguided trend known as `sociobiology'. In short, a wonderful subtle journey between the Scylla of biological reductionism and the Charbadis of idealist relativism. I very strongly recommend this book to all: specialists and general reader alike. It is yet another text in what is turning into something of renaissance of `Social' anthropology (one thinks of the work of Carrithers and Ingold as well.

Book Description
It has been twelve years since a work relating to the long-tailed African monkeys known as the guenons has been published and fifteen years have passed since the last major scientific symposium was held that was solely dedicated to current research on members of this monkey group living in the wild. Since that time, new guenon species and subspecies have been discovered, previously unstudied guenon species have become the subject of long-term research projects, and knowledge of the more well-known guenon species has greatly increased. This volume presents novel information and keen insight on research previously studied and newly discovered. A wide range of topics related to guenon biology is presented, including evolution, taxonomy, biogeography, reproductive physiology, social and positional behavior, ecology, and conservation. Composed of 26 chapters compiled by 47 authors, many of whom are young investigators in their field,
The Guenons: Diversity and Adaptation in African Monkeys provides a valuable resource for researchers and scientists in the fields of anthropology, primatology, zoology, and conservation biology.
Customer Reviews:
John G. Fleagle.......2003-07-25
"Guenons are one of the most specifically diverse groups of living primates, but the true extent of their behavioral, ecological, and phylogenetic diversity has remained largely unappreciated. This exciting volume describes many new aspects of guenon biology. The authors use the diversity of guenons to address, and often question, several major tenets of primate socioecology. Most significantly, this volume thoroughly demolishes the view that guenons are a uniform radiation."
- John G. Fleagle, State University of New York at Stony Brook
John F. Oates.......2003-07-25
"This book is a cornucopia of recently-gathered knowledge about the natural history of Africa's most species-rich group of anthropoids. The volume is particularly strong on behavioral ecology, but it also presents important new evolutionary analyses and, in a useful section on conservation, makes practical suggestions to address the growing threats posed to the survival of African primates by ever-increasing habitat loss and hunting."
- John F. Oates, Hunter College
Karen B. Strier.......2003-07-25
"The Guenons is encyclopedic in its coverage of this remarkably diverse group of primates. From chapters on evolutionary history, behavior, ecology, and conservation, The Guenons also offers a window into the world of primatology, as seen through the lenses of these monkeys and the researchers who study them. Glenn and Cords should be commended for assembling such an impressive set of contributions from so many guenon experts. This volume will be the standard reference on the guenons for many years to come."
- Karen B. Strier, University of Wisconsin-Madison

Book Description
A great deal has been written about primates; however few volumes have focused on an entire community of sympatric monkeys at a single site. Drawing upon diverse sets of data, the authors provide a multi-thematic case study of the entire monkey community of the Taï forest (Ivory Coast). Featuring a large section of colour photographs, which significantly enhance the behaviours discussed in the text, the breadth of this important volume means it will be of interest to a wide variety of primatologists, functional anatomists, psychologists, and behavioural ecologists.
