P. W. Fowler and D. E. Manolopoulos: AN ATLAS OF FULLERENES; Clarendon Press, Oxford 1995. This book is based on the spiral generation and enumeration algorithm which practically solves the topological problem of fullerene isomerism. Manolopoulos and Fowler developed the algorithm (1992) and also demonstrated its limitations (1993). In particular, they reported a tetrahedral fullerene C380 which is without a spiral (and thus, the species cannot be discovered by the algorithm). For present practical purposes, however, the treatment is certainly a reliable enumeration tool. In fact this treatment is one of the most important contributions of chemical theory to fullerene science. Primarily, the book is a catalogue of fullerenes. It presents all pentagon/hexagon based isomers for C20 - C50 and all isolated-pentagon (IPR) isomers for C60 - C100. This limitation is dictated by a rapid increase of the number of the fullerene isomers with the carbon content n (this number is roughly proportional to n**9). For C100 the number of all isomers equals 285913 (or 570602, if enantiomers are regarded as distinct). Each isomer is presented graphically together with important select characteristics (topological symmetry, NMR pattern, symmetry-conditioned vibrational activities, HMO HOMO-LUMO gaps, etc.). Generally, it has been known that in reality the symmetry of some species can be reduced either by Jahn-Teller distortion or by general energy reasons; this aspect can be handled only beyond the HMO model. Nevertheless, the topologically generated structures represent a useful input for any more sophisticated quantum-chemical computation. In addition to its function as a catalogue, the book also systematically discusses various conceptual topics. This excellent monograph is of interest to any fullerenist, but it will serve especially as a reference tool to anyone involved with higher fullerenes (after all, the book supplies their versatile nomenclature). Book Description

A decade has elapsed since the discovery of C60 in molecular beams, and five years since the first synthesis of solid C60. At the time, the opening of a new era for chemistry was foreseen and high expectations were shared by physicists and material scientists. Where are we now? Where are we aiming? What can we expect from now on? The answer will be found in this volume, written by the protagonists of the fullerene adventure. There is a whole new generation of materials now, in the form of molecules, solids, nanostructures, either directly derived from Bucky or inspired by it. They continue to create new challenges to our fundamental understanding and seem to be ready for important, long-lasting applications. Audience: The book is mainly directed to specialized scientists - physicists, chemists, material scientists and biochemists - who will find it a source of learning and inspiration. Younger researchers, too, will find it fascinating, since it allows them to learn about and quickly acquire a critical view of an interdisciplinary, frontier subject.

5 out of 5 stars Chemical Physics of Fullerenes.......2001-11-05

Fullerene science remembered a triad of anniversaries
in 1995: 25 years since C60 appeared in the literature,
10 years since it was observed in the gas-phase, and 5 years
since it was prepared in macroscopic amounts as a solid
material. The triad was commemorated, inter alia,
at the NATO workshop which was included in the program of
the Enrico Fermi School and held in Varenna, Italy
    in June 1995.

The book opens with a survey article from Kroto et al.
which places the events into a historical perspective
and links them with the contemporary research front. The
theme is further elaborated by articles from the other
three capital cities of fullerene science, written by
Smalley et al., Kratschmer and finally Huffman.
The four articles are combined into the first chapter:
    Past, Present and New Horizons.

The words chemical physics from the title could
equally well read chemistry and physics, as the
    following eight specialized chapters
    indeed give a representative cross-section
of the present fullerene science. The individual
chapters are: Formation and Structural Growth,
Physical Properties, High Fullerenes and Endohedrals,
    Exohedrals, Functionalization, Intercalated C60
    Compounds, Carbon Nanotubes, Non-carbon Nanostructures.
Altogether 28 contributions expose the on-going
research in its width and vigor.

This is a valuable volume, well balanced scientifically
as well as geographically, relevant to basically any
subfield of carbon-cluster studies. The book, no doubt,
will find its way into the libraries of many fullerene
groups. The volume was published in the NATO ASI Series, E:
Applied Sciences - Vol. 316, and it has altogether 498 pp.

4 out of 5 stars outdated, but good summary in its time.......2006-07-05

You should not get this book, as it is now heavily outdated. But in 1993, it gave a very good summary of what was known about C60 and its many variants. Already then, there was great recognition of its manifold promises for industrial uses. As the title suggests, the book explores these, under physics, microbiology and nanotech.

But the book also gives a retrospective. In the few short years to 93, a lot of research was conducted on C60, and Koruga strived to give proper accreditation to those who made the key advances.

        Book Description

The discovery and macroscopic production of the fullerenes in the early 1990's led to the initiation of a new sub-field of atomic and molecular collision studies. The beautiful structure and remarkable properties of these hollow, all-carbon molecules made them ideal subjects as model systems for studying the collision dynamics of complex molecules.
Fullerene Collision Reactions provides a comprehensive overview of the state-of-the-art of fullerene collision studies. The book begins with introductory chapters that provide the necessary background in experimental and theoretical techniques. This is followed by experimental results and theoretical calculations covering the wide range of available gas-phase fullerene collision experiments.
Emphasis is placed on gas-phase molecular beam experiments where reaction, fragmentation and charge transfer cross sections have been determined covering collision energy ranges from thermal to MeV. Atomic, ionic, electronic, cluster and surface collisions involving fullerenes are covered in depth accompanied by a clear presentation of the most commonly applied experimental and theoretical techniques.
This book will be an invaluable resource for senior undergraduate students, graduate students and researchers working in the field.

4 out of 5 stars Good book for the proper reader........2002-05-29

I got a lot out of this book: not mastery of the subject, but the kind of feel for genetics you cannot get from a popular book on the subject. I occasionally had to skip material, but I rarely got frustrated. It is well written, and reasonably short. Its production values are somewhat lacking for the price: self references are to chapters, not chapter sections, and the diagrams are often amateurish, although sometimes very helpful. My background: very minimal organic chemistry (but the terms covalent bond and hydrogen bond weren't unknown to me), a popular science book on genetics under my belt, not very extensive knowledge of biology. A book such as "Dictionary of Modern Biology" by Norah Rudin is a definite help, and that book is very inexpensive.

                  4 out of 5 stars A good book.......2000-09-19

This book has the minimun to know about molecular genetics of bacteria (I am studing this subject). The illustrations are clear and very good.I can very easily see this book being used to supplement lectures in an introductory course on biotecnology. I thoroughly recommend it.

                      Book Description

Genomics and Evolution of Eukaryotic Microbes synthesizes the rapidly emerging fields of eukaryotic diversity and genome evolution. Eukaryotes, cells with nuclei, evolved as microbes and have existed on Earth for approximately two billion years. The tremendous diversity of eukaryotic microbes (protists) is often overlooked by those who study the macroscopic eukaryotic lineages: plants, animals, and fungi. Yet, eukaryotic microbes are of critical importance to ecosystems, human health, and our desire to understand biodiversity on Earth. By bringing together groundbreaking data from genome studies of diverse eukaryotic microbes, this book elucidates the many novelties among eukaryotic genomes and provides a single resource for otherwise widely dispersed information. Eukaryotic microorganisms impact both our health and our environment. These organisms include some of the deadliest known pathogens such as iPlasmodium falciparum/i causative agent of malaria, and iEntamoeba histolytica/i an agent of dysentery. Eukaryotic microbes also play a significant role in environments through their involvement in global biogeochemical cycles. Such roles are perhaps best exemplified by the, coccolithophores including the species iEmiliania huxleyi/i, which can create 'blooms' in the oceans that are visible from outer space (i.e. as large as the state of Alaska). Despite the great importance and breadth of eukaryotic microbes (the vast majority of major ukaryotic lineages are microbial, with plants, animals and fungi representing just three of an estimated 60-200 major lineages), our understanding of their diversity, and phylogeny is only now rapidly expanding, in part bolstered by genomic studies. This book presents analyses and interpretations from experts in the field. Recent advances, particularly in DNA sequencing technologies, have made eukaryotic microbes more accessible through genome analyses. Unravelling the wealth of information on eukaryotic genomes will invariably revolutionize our understanding of eukaryotes, including their physiology, systematics, and ecology.

In this book, outstanding researchers from the US and Japan review recent progress in Epstein-Barr virus research. Most people carry EBV in memory B-cells in a latent stage. Many malignancies such as T/NK cell lymphoma, AIDS-associated B-cell lymphoma, gastric carcinoma and Hodgkin's disease have been causally linked to EBV. The development of molecular biology technique has allowed us to study the roles of individual EBV genes that act in the maintenance and disruption of EBV latency.

                            Book Description

Even before the publication of Darwin's Origin of Species, the perception of evolutionary change has been a tree-like pattern of diversification - with divergent branches spreading further and further from the trunk. In the only illustration of Darwin's treatise, branches large and small never reconnect. However, it is now evident that this view does not adequately encompass the richness of evolutionary pattern and process. Instead, the evolution of species from microbes to mammals builds like a web that crosses and re-crosses through genetic exchange, even as it grows outward from a point of origin. Some of the avenues for genetic exchange, for example introgression through sexual recombination versus lateral gene transfer mediated by transposable elements, are based on definably different molecular mechanisms. However, even such widely different genetic processes may result in similar effects on adaptations (either new or transferred), genome evolution, population genetics, and the evolutionary/ecological trajectory of organisms. For example, the evolution of novel adaptations (resulting from lateral gene transfer) leading to the flea-borne, deadly, causative agent of plague from a rarely-fatal, orally-transmitted, bacterial species is quite similar to the adaptations accrued from natural hybridization between annual sunflower species resulting in the formation of several new species. Thus, more and more data indicate that evolution has resulted in lineages consisting of mosaics of genes derived from different ancestors. It is therefore becoming increasingly clear that the tree is an inadequate metaphor of evolutionary change. In this book, Arnold promotes the 'web-of-life' metaphor as a more appropriate representation of evolutionary change in all lifeforms. This research level text is suitable for senior undergraduate and graduate level students taking related courses in departments of genetics, ecology and evolution. It will also be of relevance and use to professional evolutionary biologists and systematists seeking a comprehensive and authoritative overview of this rapidly expanding field.

Mobile genetic elements are responsible for many previously little-understood phenomena. This collection of review articles surveyss some of the most recent and exciting advances in our understanding of the mechanisms, regulation, and consequences of genetic transposition of these elements. It surveys transposition in a wide range of organisms, both prokaryotic and eukaryotic. In addition, the possible evolutionary consequences of transposition are given full consideration. The whole area of transposition is generating considerable interest and excitement and this up-to-date and timely volume will have broad appeal.

The birth of bacterial genomics since the mid-1990s brought withit several conceptual modifications and wholly new controversies. Working beyond the scope of the neo-Darwinian evolutionary synthesis, a group of leading microbial evolutionists addresses the following and related issues, often with markedly varied viewpoints: DT Did the eukaryotic nucleus, cytoskeleton and cilia also orginate from symbiosis? DT Do the current scenarios about he origin of mitochondria and plastids require revision? DT What is the extent of lateral gene transfer (between "species") among bacteria? DT Does the rDNA phylogenetic tree still stand in the age of genomics? DT Is the course of the first 3 billion years of evolution even knowable?
