This is a NAVAL HEALTH RESEARCH CENTER WRIGHT-PATTERSON AFB OH TOXICOLOGY DETACHMENT report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A068473. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: Exposure for 2 hr to smoke generated from pyrolysis of 100 g of B2- ACM was lethal to experimental animals. Surviving animals showed elevated carboxyhemogobin levels, severe respiratory acidosis, and diminished oxygen transport in the blood, the combination of which was deemed the cause of death. These animals also showed signs of pulmonary inflammatory response. Two days post exposure, animals exhibited pulmonary pathophysiology indicative of restrictive lung disease. The pattern of pulmonary dysfunction at 14 days post exposure was similar, with some measures of lung function returning to normal while others remained significantly different from normal values. Although no deaths occurred, similar patterns of pulmonary dysfunction were evident in animals exposed for 1 hr to smoke from pyrolysis of 55 or 100 g of 132-ACM. These animals also had elevated carboxyhemogobin levels, decreased blood pH, and diminished oxygen capacity immediately post exposure however these symptoms were not as severe as those in animals exposed for 2 hr to smoke generated from pyrolysis of 100 g of B2-ACM. Quantitative analysis of a few selected smoke gases (CO, CO(2), NO(x), SO(2) and aerosol particulate consistently accounted for over 80% of the amount of B2-ACM that actually burned. Calculation of the nominal concentration of the smoke correlated well with the chemical analysis, the bulk amount of B2-ACM used to generate the smoke, and the pyrolysis rate.

What a mess.......2006-12-13

This review may be a little harsh... but, if you had to sit through an entire semester with this book you would see my point. Book this is full of errors and omissions. Something that can be explained in a few sentences take pages for this author to convey and half the time the reader still has to look elsewhere for clarification of the material. Half way into the semester I had to stop reading the thing and do subject research using other sources. Amazing someone would publish a text book this bad.

Fun Math.......2006-06-06

We used this in my college Math course, and it actually had me pretty addicted to math for a while! We only used selected chapters, but those we used were easy to navigate, even somewhat fun to read, and the math really was practical (ex.-- fair division problems, helping you solve everything from the division of your estate to how to fairly divide a piece of pie!).

A nightmare.......2006-03-22

The editor of this book should be fired. In my entire educational experience, I have never used such an unacceptable text. The book is filled with errors... more than the four page list of corrections provided by the publisher can even cover. Many of the solutions provided are incorrect, and illustrations which correspond to the text are often found on different pages than the pertaining text. More frustration than it is worth, especially if used for a distance education course. Forget it!

My teacher for this class seemed to think that it is vague in parts, and a bit wordy. Regardless, for the concepts it covers, it is effective.

This has been the text for MAT 105 at the University of Georgia for several years, and I have taught the course from it ten times or so. On the whole, I am quite unhappy with the book.

In writing an elementary math text, there often must be a compromise between rigor and ease of comprehension. This book, however, is poor in both areas. It is both mathematically unrigorous and difficult for students to read. In several important cases, principles are stated which are not merely unrigorous, but are actually incorrect. This would be somewhat forgivable if the book were more readable; but students cannot understand the vaguely worded definitions and theorems in this book any more than they could understand the correct, rigorous statements.

The redeeming feature of this book is the selection of topics in it. The topics, such as graph theory, voting, game theory, and scheduling algorithms, require little or no algebra. In this way, students can improve their mathematical and analytic abilites without being subjected to the streams of equations many of them have been trained to fear. Also, each topic covered is directly applicable in a way which is visible to students, which helps hold interest up.
