      Book Description

To gain a complete overview of what is presently known about molecular carcinogenesis would prove to be a very daunting task for those not already steeped in this complex subject. Fortunately, David Warshawsky and Joseph Landolph Jr., both highly respected for their own contributions to the field, know exactly whom to call upon to fulfill the need for a definitive summary. Molecular Carcinogenesis and the Molecular Biology of Human Cancer provides a technical, as well as historical, overview of research covering the science of cancer. This volume explores molecular information specific to chemical, viral, and radiation carcinogenesis, explains the working of cellular oncogenes and tumor suppressor genes, and also introduces readers to the latest genomic and proteomic approaches. The first part of the book offers basic information; the second part deals strictly with cancer in humans. It commences with discussions on induction and exposure, then reviews complex mixtures of chemical carcinogens, and provides several chapters on tumors, organized by specific organs. This section also covers chemoprevention of chemical carcinogenesis, exposure assessment, and biomarkers, as well as the role of risk assessment, before offering a discussion on prevention that includes the history and particulars of carcinogen regulations. Featuring leading researchers writing about their areas of expertise, this book provides a succinct yet detailed reference that meets the needs of professional researchers, clinicians, and environmental regulators, as well as attorneys practicing law in the area of toxic torts. Its progressive structure allows it to also serve as a primary text or resource for students in medicine and cancer research.

        Book Description

The fourth edition of this classic text provides a thorough, yet concise review of the cellular and molecular mechanisms involved in the transformation of normal into malignant cells, the invasiveness of cancer cells into host tissues, and the metastatic spread of cancer cells in the host organism. It defines the fundamental pathophysiologic changes that occur in tumor tissue and in the host animal or patient. Each chapter discusses the historical development of a field, citing the key experimental advances to the present day, and evaluates the current evidence that best supports or rules out concepts of the molecular and cellular mechanisms regulating cancer cell behavior. For all the areas of fundamental cancer research, an effort has been made to relate basic research findings to the clinical disease states. The book is well written and well illustrated, with schematic diagrams and actual research data to demonstrate points made in the text. There is also an extensive, up-to-date bibliography, making the book valuable to scientists, and to physicians, students, and nurses interested in the field of cancer biology. The topics covered include pathologic characterization of human tumors, epidemiology of human cancer, regulation of cell proliferation and differentiation, cellular and molecular phenotypic characteristics of the cancer cell, mechanisms of carcinogenesis, tumor initiation and promotion, viral carcinogenesis, oncogenes and oncogene products, growth factors, chromosomal alterations in cancer, mechanisms of tumor metastasis, host-tumor interactions, fundamental aspects of tumor immunology, and the advances in cancer cell biology that will lead to improved diagnosis and treatment of cancer in the future.

Raymond Ruddon's book may be ten years past publication, but it is the first book I would recommend for a person seeking a reliable overview of the basic nature of cancer and cancer research. Ruddon gives an easily readable account of the history of cancer biology, emphasising the mechanics and characteristics of many forms of cancer and cancerous stages. The clarity of his discussion engages the reader. I wish that he would be willing to rewrite a new edition, because I know of no other single volume that describes the issues of cancer research so well and cogently for the student and interested layperson.

                Book Description

Metamorphic rocks make up the largest volume of the Earth. They systematically change their mineralogical composition as a result of tecto-thermal events. The outstanding feature of the 7th edition of this book is the large number of phase diagrams showing the stability relations among minerals and groups of minerals found in metamorphic rocks. The diagrams help to determine the pressure and temperature conditions under which a given collected set of metamorphic rocks may have formed. More than half of the chapters have been completely rewritten or revised. All figures have been edited and improved and recent advances in the field such as multiequilibria thermobarometry and pseudosections were incorporated in the text. The bibliography has been revised and extended, new research publications have also been included. Graduate students will find in depth information on the origin, significance and genesis of metamorphic rocks.

5 out of 5 stars one of the best textbooks available.......2000-04-10

Petrogenesis of metamorphic rocks is probable the best textbook available for students of metamorphic petrology. In a short, concise form it introduces the reader to the principles of metamorphic petrology as well as to the evolution of different rock types under changing metamorphic conditions.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent source for anyone studying metamorphic rocks........1999-06-02

This book is divided into two sections. The first section deals with the basic princiles of metamorphism, including composition of source rocks, types, processes and condidtions of metamorphism. A very detailed description on the construction of metamorphic projections is also included. Part two covers the metamorphism of different rock compositions including ultramafic, mafic, carbonate, pelitic, and granitoid rocks. This section is very detailed, without bogging down with specific examples of metamorphism.

                  Book Description

The subject of this book is forward and inverse modelling of surface waves. Although the emphasis is placed in Rayleigh wave propagation in geomaterials, the theory is developed for rather general constitutive models spanning from one-component linear elasticity and viscoelasticity to multi-component systems and nonlinear continua. An attempt is made to achieve a good balance between the formal development of the theory and its practical implementation, always highlighting the similarities of the approaches in different fields of application of surface waves.
Experimental techniques for geotechnical site characterization using surface waves are presented in details. A chapter is devoted to computational methods for generalized surface and interface waves. A part of the book concerns with the propagation of surface waves in poroelastic saturated materials and to theoretical foundations of nonlinear surface waves.
The approach to the subject is new in the scientific literature. Several results are published for the first time. Attached to the book is a CD containing freeware software for surface wave analysis.

                    Book Description

In September 1996, the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT), prohibiting nuclear explosions worldwide, in all environments. The treaty calls for a global verification system, including a network of 321 monitoring stations distributed around the globe, a data communications network, an international data center, and onsite inspections, to verify compliance. The problem of identifying small-magnitude banned nuclear tests and discriminating between such tests and the background of earthquakes and mining-related seismic events, is a challenging research problem. Because they emphasize CTBT verification research, the 12 papers in this special volume primarily addresses regional data recorded by a variety of arrays, broadband stations, and temporarily deployed stations. Nuclear explosions, earthquakes, mining-related explosions, mine collapses, single-charge and ripple-fired chemical explosions from Europe, Asia, North Africa, and North America are all studied. While the primary emphasis is on short-period, body-wave discriminants and associated source and path corrections, research that focuses on long-period data recorded at regional and teleseismic distances is also presented Hence, these papers demonstrate how event identification research in support of CTBT monitoring has expanded in recent years to include a wide variety of event types, data types, geographic regions and statistical techniques.

                      Book Description

The book presents new clustering schemes, dynamical systems and pattern recognition algorithms in geophysical, geodynamical and natural hazard applications. The original mathematical technique is based on both classical and fuzzy sets models. Geophysical and natural hazard applications are mostly original. However, the artificial intelligence technique described in the book can be applied far beyond the limits of Earth science applications. The book is intended for research scientists, tutors, graduate students, scientists in geophysics and engineers
