This is an excellent book about the iron oxides. as the book says it talks about everything you every wanted to know about iron. It helped me understand a great deal about iron chemistry in a very short amount of time. the book is very user friendly and divided very well into different chapters. If you want to learn about iron chemistry this book is by far worth every penny.

Krebs introduces the user to the background of how we came to know and understand the chemical nature of Earth and everything in the universe. He also examines the present concerns about the effects of chemicals on the Earth's environment. The elements are arranged according to their placement on the Periodic Table, which enables the user to examine the similarities and differences of elements found in different groups, periods, and series of the Periodic Table. A comprehensive glossary as well as appendixes and an index provide easy access for student users.

Very Disappointing.......1999-09-03
I wanted so much to like this book-- there is such need for a good tome of this sort. Unfortunately this book doesn't satisfy that need. I had hoped it would give much in-depth knowledge of each element. It does not: it is remedial, and, sadly, that in the truest sense. Now, even a remedial book of this sort would be nothing to sneer at, and I would have rated it much, much higher were it not for the fact that, not only does it offer but a smidgeon of information about each element, but that information is badly written (often quite prolix), and worse, replete with the most glaring inaccuracies and downright errors! I found myself scribbling corrections and refutations in the margins, I was so annoyed! One could quote literally dozens -- almost every little element-entry contained one or more flat inaccuracies. The definitions of technical terms alone are so poor I can only surmise the author has but a poor understanding of his subject. And indeed the information he presents seems to be an uneven patchwork of data gleaned from all over, some from old books now quite out of date. (He, for example, writes that Thorium is "like hafnium above it in Group IVA of the periodic chart"-- and that's no longer the case as of the 1940s. He says that Iodine "has no naturally occuring isotopes" -- and his definition of an isotope is an element "with more than the normal neutrons" in its nucleus). He writes that Helium was one of the elements "predicted by the periodic chart" -- totally wrong: far from being predicted by the chart, the discovery of the Noble Gases in toto, from 1895 to 1899, came as a complete surprise to all. In fact, no one had the slightest clue that an entire group of the chart remained to be discovered. I could go on-- and on-- AND ON --- with this litany of error, but why? Better to look for an old copy of Hammond's "Encyclopedia of the Chemical Elements", or Greenwood & Earnshaw's magisterial "Chemistry of the Elements", than wasting your money on this.

I'm a big fan of books that give the sweeping histories of common, overlooked substances, particularly when they use language that a layman can understand. (One of my favorites is The 13th Element, which gives the complete history of phosphorus and its promethean relationship to mankind.) Dealing with Calcium Carbonate, this book lives up to its ambitious title, showing how the mineral has influenced everything in civilization, from the earliest chalk artworks, to the plastic on our keyboards. Read this book and you will never look at limestone or paper or a bottle of Tums the same way again. Calcium is as indispensible a part of our experience on earth as carbon or oxygen or nitrogen or cadmium, or any other elements. And what's most remarkable about this book is that it's compelling for everyone. As most of you can probably already infer--I'm not the brightest bulb around. Yet I was enlightened and entertained, from the Cretaceous Period straight through to today. Nice work.

The Ontogeny of Information is a critical intervention into the ongoing and perpetually troubling nature-nurture debates surrounding human development. Originally published in 1985, this was a foundational text in what is now the substantial field of developmental systems theory. In this revised edition Susan Oyama argues compellingly that nature and nurture are not alternative influences on human development but, rather, developmental products and the developmental processes that produce them.
Information, says Oyama, is thought to reside in molecules, cells, tissues, and the environment. When something wondrous occurs in the world, we tend to question whether the information guiding the transformation was pre-encoded in the organism or installed through experience or instruction. Oyama looks beyond this either-or question to focus on the history of such developments. She shows that what developmental “information” does depends on what is already in place and what alternatives are available. She terms this process “constructive interactionism,” whereby each combination of genes and environmental influences simultaneously interacts to produce a unique result. Ontogeny, then, is the result of dynamic and complex interactions in multileveled developmental systems.
The Ontogeny of Information challenges specialists in the fields of developmental biology, philosophy of biology, psychology, and sociology, and even nonspecialists, to reexamine the existing nature-nurture dichotomy as it relates to the history and formation of organisms.

Great Book.......2002-03-29
Sorry that my review is so small. This is a great book about the dichotomy of genes and environment and how there is no real line dividing the 2. It speaks of some of the misconceptions that way of thinking produces. It also discusses some of the common metaphors that have been used in the past relating genes to "blue prints" and the such and how these metaphors should be gotton rid of. The ingredients that go into an oransism and inheritance are many which includes genes, atmosphere, culture, and many more that she discuses. All are important in the construction of an organism and none are more important then any other. She also discuses the silliness of the nature nurture debate. I think this book and way of thinking is very important for science, social sciences and just the everyday [mis]conceptions most people in the western world have of the dualism of genetics and environment.
