Book Description
Provides an authoritative source of practical information on stereochemistry and its impact on drug development. Unlike other books which focus on synthesis, this work explores analytical, pharmacological, and regulatory topics in dealing with the theory and practice of stereochemistry in the pharmaceutical industry today. It specifically addresses how the body metabolizes chiral molecules; the varying effects of different chiral molecules; and provides detailed evaluations of current seperation techniques. Includes regulatory information.
Average customer rating:
- It is a good book but difficult to read.
- A concise and beautifully written book on stereochemistry.

Book Description
This well-illustrated and well-referenced book provides a systematic introduction to the modern aspects of the topographical stereochemistry of coordination compounds, which are made up of metal ions surrounded by other non-metal atoms, ions and molecules.
Customer Reviews:
It is a good book but difficult to read........1999-04-18
Zelewsky's book covers an important topic which is typically not covered in detail in graduate classes in inorganic chemistry. Although the book is somewhat difficult to read, which is probably because the author is not a native English speaker, it is worth wading through.
A concise and beautifully written book on stereochemistry........1997-11-19
The book explains the modern aspects of stereochemistry of coordination compounds including nomenclature, chirality elements, isomer counting, helices, chains and knots, gives an account of the historical background and includes many 3D-figures as stereograms. All figures and additional material are available on the internet. The book is well suited for undergraduates, post-graduates and especially lecturers who can benefit from the supplementary material available. Just colors are missing - but this for the sake of a really affordable price.

Bible of Stereo.......2006-10-06
This is still the single best book for learning stereochemistry, which is one of the most fundamental aspects of organic structure and synthesis, and it became an instant classic when it was first published in the 60s. Stereochemistry is a topic that comes up again and again in an important manner no matter what kind of research in chemistry you are doing. Ernest Eliel was probably the foremost expert in stereochemistry of his time, and even now, there is nothing which compares with his book. Luckily, he has updated it periodically. It now includes an excellent section on stereoselective synthesis, which drives research in both academics and industry. The earlier chapters on the stereochemistry of acyclic and cyclic systems (especially six membered rings) are updated and still remain the clearest explanations of conformation and reactivity that I have seen. They contain very basic and extremely important concepts which drive the reactivity of organic molecules in any reaction, including those in biological systems. I have this book on my shelf for six years now, and so do most of my professors. And we find that no matter what kind of reesearch question we are pondering, we often keep coming back to 'Eliel'. An indispensable reference.
A Classsic.......2000-04-19
This is a classic book by a world-renowned expert. I am a practicing organic chemist, and this book has never failed to answer even the most obscure questions I have had about stereochemistry. It is highly recommended as an indispensible reference on the subject.
Book Description
A short historical introduction serves to introduce many common stereochemical terms used throughout the book. Chapter two is an account of the structures of simple unstrained organic molecules followed by examples of strained molecules. The third chapter deals with conformational analysis of acyclic and carbocyclic molecules, ending with a short exposition of molecular mechanics. Chapter four is about stereoisomerism in molecules and compounds. A full description of enantiomerism and diastereomerism is followed by an explanation of the nomenclature for absolute and relative configurations of molecules and for topism. A short chapter describes racemates, their resolution, and methods for determining enantiomeric purity. The book concludes with a survey of stereoselective and stereospecific reactions, including the use of chiral catalysts and auxiliaries, rules for predicting stereoselectivity, and double asymmetric synthesis.

Great for those who are begining.......2000-06-15
This is an excelente book, for students of College first semesters ,you can learn a lot about chiral molecules and stereo ysomers, the Ingold rules and synthesis of molecules with an specific optical activity or with a nedded conformation a configuration.
note; I read this book in spanish, because it was written by my teacher's teacher
Book Description
Stereochemistry covers the fundamental principles in all aspects of stereochemistry. This concise resource is generously enriched with numerous worked examples. Concentrating on organic chemistry, early chapters in this resourceful publication deal mainly with definitions of terms such as chirality, enantiomers, diastereoisomers and racemisation, complete with suitable examples to illustrate key concepts. Use of a polarimeter and associated definitions are described, together with two different conventions D, L and R, S for specification of configuration. The distinction between conformation and configuration is developed to include assignment onf configurations to di-substituted cyclohexanes and to the decalins.

Book Description
Many chemicals are found in "right-" and "left-handed" forms that may react differently in the body. In planning a synthesis, chemists must know how to select the best method for making the preferred form of a chemical. This book shows how to choose the best method for a given synthesis. It provides readers with a thorough understanding of stereoselectivity in organic and medicinal chemistry as well as the pharmaceutical, agricultural, and food industries.
Book Description
In recent years, evolutionary theorists have come to recognize that the reductionist, individualist, gene-centered approach to evolution cannot sufficiently account for the emergence of complex biological systems over time. Peter A. Corning has been at the forefront of a new generation of complexity theorists who have been working to reshape the foundations of evolutionary theory. Well known for his Synergism Hypothesis—a theory of complexity in evolution that assigns a key causal role to various forms of functional synergy—Corning puts this theory into a much broader framework in Holistic Darwinism, addressing many of the issues and concepts associated with the evolution of complex systems. Corning's paradigm embraces and integrates many related theoretical developments of recent years, from multilevel selection theory to niche construction theory, gene-culture coevolution theory, and theories of self-organization. Offering new approaches to thermodynamics, information theory, and economic analysis, Corning suggests how all of these domains can be brought firmly within what he characterizes as a post–neo-Darwinian evolutionary synthesis.
Customer Reviews:
Keeps getting better.......2006-09-09
This work states the case for the importance of synergy across biology and economics much more solidly than his prior work. It is surprising that the book has not gotten a review until now. I wish that works like this were getting more attention than the intelligent design vs. evolution debate. Corning assembles a lot of evidence to point towards the "new evolutionary paradigm." I cannot think of another work which marshalls so many parallel lines of research to where a new synthesis might be coming. Readable, sometimes polemical, informative, and clear. At some point, though, there is almost too much thrown into his case. Four sections packed in a lot: Synergy and evolution, Bioeconomics, Thermodynamics of life, and Evolutionary ethics. The thermodynamics section was a gem on the often confused subject of how biology meets thermodynamic theory. His idea: "In sum, the development of novel bioenergetic technologies in the evolutionary process has had little to do with entropy or dissipative structures and much more to do with engineering--design improvements in the ability of living systems to capture and utilize available energy. It is the organized use of available energy in evolved, informed (cybernetic) structures that has been the key, as noted earlier. And the explanation for these changes lies in their economic advantages, as Lotka long ago suggested." (p. 351)
A great read; a passionate and encylopedic collection of current ideas assembled into an intriguing hypothesis. I look forward to other reviews of his work.
