    Book Description

The Chemistry and Physics of Coatings provides an introduction to the science underpinning the paint (organic coatings) industry to graduate level chemists who may have no previous knowledge of polymer-based technologies. This book stresses important physical phenomena such as rheology, film formation, and mechanical properties, their exploitation in paint, and the economic and legislative background against which coatings technology is tested. Attention is given to the chemistry of the polymers, pigments, and solvents that compose typical coatings, and the complex 'science and art' of formulating them effectively. The book also aims to give insights into the commercial application of the chemistries described, and includes a glossary of industry and polymer-related terms. Revised and updated, this second edition includes separate chapters on binders for high solids and solvent-free coatings, inorganic and hybrid coatings and coatings formulation. There is also a new section on coatings additives. The Chemistry of Physics and Coatings will be of interest to graduates with no direct involvement in the field, such as chemistry teachers seeking examples of chemical technology. It should also prove useful to undergraduates studying materials and polymer sciences, who may be seeking a career within the paint industry. Finally, it may provide a useful introduction to the subject for new entrants to the industry. Extracts from reviews of 1st Edition "…Conveniently sized, readable, affordably priced and surprisingly comprehensive ... In short this is an excellent book, which I recommend without hesitation." Journal of Materials Chemistry "..an informative and thoroughly recommended volume." Polymer International

        Book Description

Silicon, the basic material for a multibillion-dollar industry, is the most widely researched and applied semiconductor, and its surfaces are the most thoroughly studied of all semiconductor surfaces. Silicon Surfaces and Formation of Interfaces may be used as an introduction to graduate-level physics and chemical physics. Moreover, it gives a specialized and comprehensive description of the most common faces of silicon crystals as well as their interaction with adsorbates and overlayers. This knowledge is presented in a systematic and easy-to-follow way. Discussion of each system is preceded by a brief overview which categorizes the features and physical mechanisms before the details are presented. The literature is easily available, and the references are numerous and organized in tables, allowing a search without the need to browse through the text.

Though this volume focuses on a scientific understanding of physics on the atomistic and mesoscopic levels, it also highlights existing and potential links between basic research in surface science and applications in the silicon industry. It will be valuable to anyone writing a paper, thesis, or proposal in the field of silicon surfaces.

            Book Description

It became clear in the early days of fusion research that the effects of the containment vessel (erosion of "impurities") degrade the overall fusion plasma performance. Progress in controlled nuclear fusion research over the last decade has led to magnetically confined plasmas that, in turn, are sufficiently powerful to damage the vessel structures over its lifetime. This book reviews current understanding and concepts to deal with this remaining critical design issue for fusion reactors. It reviews both progress and open questions, largely in terms of available and sought-after plasma-surface interaction data and atomic/molecular data related to these "plasma edge" issues.

                Book Description

The development of oriented organic monomolecular layers by the Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) and self-assembly (SA) techniques has led researchers toward their goal of assembling individual molecules into highly ordered architectures. Thus the continually growing contribution of LB and SA systems to the chemistry and physics of thin organic films is widely recognized. Equally well-known is the difficulty in keeping up to date with the burgeoning multidisciplinary research in this area. Dr. Ulman provides a massive survey of the available literature. The book begins with a section on analytical tools to broaden the understanding of the structure and properties of monolayers and films. Following sections discuss LB films, the preparation and properties of SA monolayers and films, the modeling of LB and SA monolayers, and the application of LB and SA films.

                Book Description

This primer provides an introduction to the subject of surfaces at the level of undergraduates and first year postgraduates. There are four chapters, the first concerns basic thermodynamic material used to understand the properties of surfaces including; surface tension, Gibbs adsorption, surface pressure and surface phase equilibria, surfactants and micelles, wetting, detergency, and contact angle. The second chapter concentrates on gas adsorbtion at solid surfaces and covers topics including adsorbtion, Langmuir isotherms, heats of adsorbtion, BET isotherms, physisorbtion, chemisorbtion, precursor adsorbtion kinetics, well-defined surfaces, UHV, surface sensitivity and selectivity, surface diffusion and electrons interacting with matter. Chapter three then outlines the physico- chemical principles of XPS, AES, LEED, STM, AFM, work function measurements, UPS, TPD, molecular beams, HREELS and PAIRS and the types of fundamental surface information each of these techniques provides. The final chapter contains a series of worked examples and problems, bringing together the various strands developed in Chapters 1-3 in order to elucidate surface phenomena. The book is unique in its mix of 'Classical' and 'Modern' surface science and should be relevant to physicists, chemists and material scientists.

                  Book Description

Describes several specific spectrometric techniques that are very useful in elucidating the fundamental nature of matter: EXAFS--Extended X-Ray Absorption of Fine Structure; SEXAFS--which is EXAFS applied to Surface Phenomena; and XANES--X-Ray Absorption Near Edge Structures. Articles explain the phenomena and describe examples of X-ray absorption applications in several fields, including chemistry, biochemistry, catalysis, amorphous and liquid systems, synchrotron radiation, and surface phenomena. Contributors explain the underlying theory, how to set up X-ray absorption experiments, and how to analyze the details of the resulting spectra. This volume will be of particular interest to physicists, chemists, biologists, and materials scientists.

Ion scattering spectrometry, a powerful analytical tool used to determine the structure and composition of a substance, addresses critical problems in semiconductors, thin film growth, coatings, computer chips, magnetic storage devices, bioreactive surfaces, catalytic surfaces, and electrochemical surfaces (including the large battery industry). Principles and Applications of Ion Scattering Spectrometry: Surface Chemical and Structural Analysis represents the first and only book on this exciting field, seamlessly merging theoretical fundamentals with cutting-edge practical applications.

Author J. Wayne Rabalais, the world’s leading expert in ion scattering spectrometry, recognizes both the pedagogic and research needs of such a text and divides his work accordingly. Chapters 1 through 5 address senior undergraduates and beginning graduate students in chemical physics and include figures and illustrative diagrams intended to exemplify the discussions. Chapters 6 through 9 comprise material on the brink of current research and contain specific references to other sources at the end of each; further, chapter 10 is a bibliography of ion scattering publications. Topics covered include:

-Introductory, theoretical, and experimental aspects of ion scattering
                    -General features and structural analysis
-The recent technique of scattering and recoiling imaging spectrometry
                    -Examples of structural analysis
                    -Ion-surface charge exchange phenomena
                    -Hyperthermal ion-surface interactions

Engineers, researchers, professors, and postdoctoral associates involved in surface analysis, surface science, and studies of surfaces of materials will find Rabalais’ incomparable study a seminal moment in the advance of ion scattering spectrometry.
