Customer Reviews:
Essential for any lab student.......2007-10-04
This is such a useful, and more importantly, durable lab notebook - the binding of my old one has stayed on for 5+ years and the new one is going strong! Also, the copy pages are just as legible as the originals, and the quadrille-ruled pages help you to copy charts and organize data much better than plain notebook paper.
Great Lab Notebook........2007-07-11
I was required to use these in my general chemistry courses and now that I'm doing my own research, I knew this would be perfect.
PROS:
Pages are numbered.
Duplicates are made, but if you don't need duplicates you can have a 100 page notebook (numbering will be a bit strange.
Pages are like graph paper instead of regular notebook paper.
CON:
If you spill chemicals on the notebook, the paper will absorb them and then you'll be stuck exposing yourself to those chemicals for the rest of the semester. This is probably true for notebooks, to a greater or lesser extent. :)
Great product!.......2005-09-26
I needed this product for a class. I bought the item on Friday and I had it by Monday. Definitely was impressed!

Book Description
This text is intended for the one-semester introductory biochemistry text for sophomore/junior level, non-biochemistry majors. Most students who use this book are biology, agriculture, technology, nursing, physics, geology, or nutrition majors. A beginning biology, general chemistry, and at least one semester of organic chemistry are assumed as preparation. Noted for their ability to demonstrate the connection between biochemistry and students' lives, authors Mary Campbell and Shawn Farrell draw students into the material with stellar coverage of the latest research. The standard-setting illustration program enhances students understanding. The flexible organization of the text can be changed to suit the needs of specific courses and students, depending on the instructor's preference.
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Choice.......2006-11-06
This textbook has an excellent mix of detailed information and readability. Explanations are clear and illustrations are numerous and greatly add to the learning experience. The flow of material is well suited to learning. There is a logical flow that aids the student in building a solid understanding of the subject. I am so thankful that my Biochem professor chose this text as the requirement for our class (Biochemistry for PharmD program).
Typo City.......2006-01-30
Chap 2 Question 34 answer from the back of the book states:
"We now have .003 mol of H+ in approximately 0.1 L of solution. This is approximately 0.3 M H+."
Now, I might be wrong, but isn't it really 0.03 M H+? M = moles/L and since 0.1 L is one-tenth of a liter, one should be able to multiply both .003 and 0.1 by 10 to get the correct molarity.
I've found other boo-boos in this book too.
A good introduction.......2001-07-03
I used this text in our 300-level undergrad biochemistry course. It was written quite simply, and most of the diagrams were good (although the professor had to correct many mistakes he had found). It is great for an introductory book, but it stinks for a student intending to pursue graduate study in the subject. I would recommend Stryer's biochem book for a more in-depth look at the topic.
Good, but carbohydrates a mess.......1999-07-25
It's a good one semester-type of book. It is concise and clear at the same time. I just saw a number of mistakes with carbohydrates, esp. disaccharides, e.g. Fig 12.12 on p.435, problem 14.b on p.452 etc. Please Mary, do not trust your TA-s for these things because you cause a lot of confusion among us, the stupid undergrads!

Customer Reviews:
Thorough Guide to Keeping an Industrial Laboratory Notebook.......2006-05-31
As a technical rewriter for an international patent office in Tokyo, Japan, I came across this book sitting on my desk. It provides a thorough guide to keeping an industrial laboratory notebook. Topics discussed included the following:
* types of suitable acid-free ink and paper for laboratory notebooks
* suitable methods for storage of laboratory notebooks
* differences between academic notekeeping and industrial notekeeping
* the importance of teaching notekeeping skills, starting with the sophomore year in college
* the importance of witnesses and clearly dated and qualified notebook entries in the patent industry
* good layout of the laboratory notebook, together with examples of the same
* electronic counterparts to the laboratory notebook
The writing was clear and easy to read and follow, and included numerous examples and photographs.
Of particular note were the descriptions and examples of the critical importance of witnesses in laboratory notekeeping for patents. The author gave an example of how the testimony of a witness for a Dr. Kassel on May 6, 1938, was found to be "even stronger proof of conception than the inventor's own ... records" (p. 108).
On a related note, the author discussed the importance of continuity (diligence) in securing patents by explaining that even if it could be shown in court that one inventor had initially conceived of an idea before another, the initial inventor could still lose the patent to the later inventor if the latter showed much greater diligence in pursuing the invention.
This title shed much new light on aspects of industrial notekeeping. The only reason that I did not give this review five stars was that the chapter on the electronic notebook was outdated; it did not take into account the World Wide Web. This is understandable, considering that the title was published in 1985; nevertheless, there should be an updated edition, which does not seem to exist. However, the rest of the chapter, and the rest of the book, was sufficiently general in scope to continue to be of great use, even now. I would actually have given this book 4.5 stars if possible.
Overall, the title proved useful and easy to read, and I finished reading the entire work in just a few days. Highly recommended.
Benjamin L. Russell
Good summary of standard industrial practice.......1999-09-02
If you need to keep a lab notebook for your work you'll probably end up getting instructions like these. I picked up my copy used; I believe that the American Chemical Society has published a revised edition.
I write a notebook for personal reasons, so some of the detail about getting pages notarized and witnessed seem a bit of overkill.

Science writer Matt Ridley has found a way to tell someone else's story without being accused of plagiarism. Genome: The Autobiography of a Species in 23 Chapters delves deep within your body (and, to be fair, Ridley's too) looking for dirt dug up by the Human Genome Project. Each chapter pries one gene out of its chromosome and focuses on its role in our development and adult life, but also goes further, exploring the implications of genetic research and our quickly changing social attitudes toward this information. Genome shies away from the "tedious biochemical middle managers" that only a nerd could love and instead goes for the A-material: genes associated with cancer, intelligence, sex (of course), and more.
Readers unfamiliar with the jargon of genetic research needn't fear; Ridley provides a quick, clear guide to the few words and concepts he must use to translate hard science into English. His writing is informal, relaxed, and playful, guiding the reader so effortlessly through our 23 chromosomes that by the end we wish we had more. He believes that the Human Genome Project will be as world-changing as the splitting of the atom; if so, he is helping us prepare for exciting times--the hope of a cure for cancer contrasts starkly with the horrors of newly empowered eugenicists. Anyone interested in the future of the body should get a head start with the clever, engrossing Genome. --Rob Lightner
Book Description
The genome's been mapped.
But what does it mean?
Arguably the most significant scientific discovery of the new century, the mapping of the twenty-three pairs of chromosomes that make up the human genome raises almost as many questions as it answers. Questions that will profoundly impact the way we think about disease, about longevity, and about free will. Questions that will affect the rest of your life.
Genome offers extraordinary insight into the ramifications of this incredible breakthrough. By picking one newly discovered gene from each pair of chromosomes and telling its story, Matt Ridley recounts the history of our species and its ancestors from the dawn of life to the brink of future medicine. From Huntington's disease to cancer, from the applications of gene therapy to the horrors of eugenics, Matt Ridley probes the scientific, philosophical, and moral issues arising as a result of the mapping of the genome. It will help you understand what this scientific milestone means for you, for your children, and for humankind.
Customer Reviews:
Understanding what makes us, US.......2007-07-12
This is a great primer for anyone wanting to understand what genes are - and they are not there to cause diseases!!!. The writing style is informative without being weighty and the book is an easy read for the non-scientific.
Compelling.......2007-06-27
I love this book. I only gave it 4 stars because I haven't finished it yet. It's one of those books that you can read over and over and learn new material each time. Matt Ridley's writing style is very easy to follow and he makes the discoveries of science compelling. It's a well organized piece that will most likely intrigue your friends and family as it makes for great conversation. I'm planning on checking out his other published works as well. Great gift too!
review of genome .......2007-05-29
I only read one chapter but i thought it was well written and easy to read despite the complex subject matter.
Genome.......2007-02-07
This is one of the most interesting books I have read in a long time. I am in the field of music and business. This book broke it down so that I could understand most of the major concepts. It is a very good overview of what the Genome Project is and begins to discuss some of the implications that it may have for the future.
Remarkable.......2006-12-31
Fascinating revelations about the workings of genes by a talented writer who makes a complex subject entertaining, insightful, and informative without overloading the non-scientist with arcane scientific and technical jargon. Perhaps even puts a thumb on the scale when a person weighs the contibutions of nature verses nurture in determining who we are and who we will become.

Product Description
"A Lucid and exhilarating romp through our 23 human chromosomes that lets us see how nature and nurture combine to make us human." --James Watson
Customer Reviews:
Our story is written in our genes.......2005-04-10
British science writer, Matt Ridley tells the story of the human genome by concentrating on one gene per chromosome and taking his readers from the beginning of life on Earth to the possible future of humanity. If you are interested in the advances in genetics, "Genome" is a quick, interesting overview, although it was published in 1999 and is already slightly out-of-date.
For instance, the 'final' human genome sequence wasn't published until 2003 (the 'draft' was published in 2001.) However, genetics is such a fast-moving field, that any book on this subject is automatically out-of-date even as it is going to press. So read "Genome" and enjoy!
Ridley does not duck the ethical questions concerning the manipulation of the genome. His final four chapters on chromosomes 19, 20, 21, and 22 are labeled respectively: "Prevention;" "Politics;" "Eugenics;" and "Free Will." It is interesting to note that the inventor of DNA fingerprinting, Alec Jeffreys, believes every citizen's genetic information should be stored on a national data base, but for identification purposes only. It should not be used to store information about susceptibility to disease for fear that governments and insurance companies will use such data to discriminate against those of us who might be greater health risks because of our genetic profiles.
One of Ridley's recurrent themes (the capital letters are his) is that "GENES ARE NOT THERE TO CAUSE DISEASES." So if you do happen to have the gene for 'bad' blood lipids (see chromosome 19), you are not automatically doomed. In fact, the author argues very forcefully that this is the genetic information that you (not your insurance company) should know, so that you can take preventative life-style measures.
On the other hand, you may not want to know if you have the mutated version of the gene that causes Huntington's chorea (see the chapter on chromosome 4, entitled "Fate.")
One of the most heartening stories in "Genome" concerns the virtual elimination of cystic fibrosis in the American Jewish population: "The Committee for the Prevention of Jewish Genetic Disease organizes the test of schoolchildren's blood. When matchmakers are later considering a marriage between two young people, they can call a hotline and quote the two anonymous numbers" that the boy and girl received when they were tested. If both are carriers of the same mutation for cystic fibrosis (or Tay-Sachs disease), they are advised not to marry.
This policy seems to be working--why not expand this type of genetic testing to the whole population?
One small mistake should be noted. In the chapter on "Prevention" the author states that, "After Fleming found penicillin we were guilty of neglect if we failed to take a dying tubercular patient to the doctor." Actually penicillin is active only against Gram-positive bacteria and not against Gram-negative species, including 'Mycobacterium tuberculosis' (the cause of tuberculosis).
Other than the above, "Genome" is a very meaty introduction to a chordate in "a phylum that survived the Cambrian era 500 million years ago by the skin of its teeth in competition with the brilliantly successful arthropods." We are lucky to be here, and lucky to have our genetic story told by such an interesting writer.
