I don't know this edition, but the 2nd Edition is great!.......2005-08-10
I don't know this edition, but I think the 2nd edition is great! I'm a Ph.D. chemist, but wanted to learn more statistics, and learn it better. I found this book concise, and I thought the authors explained fundamental concepts and did so with admirable clarity. Me and many of my colleagues consider it our best reference on statistics!
Basic stats, just more complicated!.......2005-07-10
The book overall is a highbrow explanation of elementary statistics, applied to a chemist's world. It does not do a very good job of explaining your base statistics, so I would recommend only people that have had some true statistics courses and background use this book. It provides good examples from an analytical chemist's point of view, but beyond that, the book is useless.

Customer Reviews:
Informative but broad.......2000-03-15
An informative book that covers a wide range of topics in chemometrics. About a third of the book deals with statistics, giving a good review to signal processing, ANOVA, t-tests, etc. For someone that wanted a book dealing only with chemometrics, it is disappointing to find a big portion of the book dedicated to basic statistics. A lot of topics are covered but not all in much detail. For example, there are 3 pages on SIMCA, 4 pages on PCR and PLS. There are more details when you get into the sections on neural networks and fuzzy theory. The examples are OK but not always easy to follow if you are not familiar with a particular method because steps are skipped. This book is a great overview of chemometrics-useful to refresh memories or get new ideas for data treatment- but needs to be supplemented with additional resources to learn more any one particular method. Fortunately the author includes a "general reading" section at the end of each chapter which provides references for books with more details.

Book Description
Fundamentals of Analytical Chemistry are usually presented as a sum of chemical and physical foundations, laws, axioms and equations for analytical methods and procedures. In contrast, this book delivers a practice-oriented, general guiding theory valid for all methods and techniques. Starting with a closer look to analytical signals and their dependencies, all the important figures of merit characterizing the power of analytical procedures and the reliability of analytical results are discussed and quantified, such as sensitivity, precision, accuracy and ruggedness. Elements of signal theory, information theory, statistics and fundamentals of calibration are also presented for this aim. The metrological foundations included define strictly the figures of merit in order to minimize confusions still appearing in Analytical Chemistry publications today.

Most ideal tutorial of chemometrics.......2000-06-08
Chemometrics is not intrisically difficult to understand, but it has a high barrier especially for beginners. One of the reasons may be that most of tutorials employses unnecessarily many equations, and they describe claculation algorithms too much. Nonetheless, the basic concept of PCR and PLS should be described on the line of CLS and ILS. The discovery of advantage of ILS, and the idea of using latent variables by PCA are the most important to fully understand PCR and PLS. Richard Kramer writes the book along this concept, and we can comprehensively understand the ideas of maltivariate analysis of spectra. He uses many figures, as if we were performing simulations by ourself. After fully understanding of this book, we would understand other tutorials more deeply and easily.

Chemometrics: Data Analysis for the Laboratory and Chemical Plant
ASIN: 0471124516 |
Book Description
An outstanding practical guide to the most common chemometric methods in use today
Chemometrics explains how to apply the most widely used pattern recognition and multivariate calibration techniques to solve data analysis problems. This practical guide describes all key methods in terms of processes and applications in order to help the reader easily identify the best technique for a given situation.
Drawing on years of industrial experience with chemometric tools, the authors share their six basic steps, or "habits," for achieving reliable chemometric results, and cover key areas such as:
* Defining and understanding the problem
* Experimental planning and design
* Preprocessing of samples and variables
* Supervised and unsupervised pattern recognition
* Classical and inverse methods of multivariate calibration
Complete with helpful chapter-end summaries, technical references, and more, this book is an invaluable hands-on resource for analytical chemists and laboratory scientists who use chemometrics in their work.

A "Users Guide" to chemometrics.......2006-04-28
Chemometrics by Beebe et al. is my first recommendation to colleagues interested in the successful use and theory of chemometrics. It is a user focused book with theory sufficient to guide the appropriate and informed use of chemometric techniques in a variety of analyses. It is a "hard read" in the best sense of that phrase. You will probably have to work at getting through this book, but you do not need a degree in mathematics to understand and enjoy it.
If you are using one of the many "shrink wrapped" chemometrics software packages available today, and you are troubled by these techniques great utility, and your limited understanding of the underlying theory, Beebe is a great a place to start.
Chemometrics for the near-beginner.......2002-08-26
The authors have put together a supremely useful guide to actually using chemometric techniques, as opposed to academic research. Consequently, my copy is getting dog-eared from frequent use. Perhaps the most helpful part of the book is the multitude of tables that explain when each different technique might best be used, and how to understand and interpret the diagnostics that arise from the calculations. The table of questions to ask BEFORE an experiment is worth the price of the book. If you're trying to write new chemometric algorithms, buy something else. But if you're trying to apply chemometric techniques in the 'real world' with the highest information-to-effort ratio, you need a copy of this book.
Solid, well written book.......2000-12-28
Admittedly, I'm biased as the authors are friends. However, this is one of the best books on chemometrics, particularly for those who have some exposure to the subject and wish to learn more. The authors have drawn on their years of experience explaining complex results to non-expert clients to present some complex mathematical ideas in an understandable fashion.

Book Description
Chemists in research and development laboratories have relatively few published resources on the design and analysis of experiments. In recent years massive changes have occurred in the tools and instrumentation at their disposal, in the scale of databases linking the properties of pure materials, solutions or other mixtures to molecular structure, and in the sheer ability to collect data through automated data acquisition systems. Despite these advances, many chemists still apply only rudimentary data analysis techniques and remain unaware of the advances made in information extraction over the last decade. Design and Analysis in Chemical Research provides the means to overcome that problem. An international panel of contributors address the principles of design and analysis in chemical research and development, with a thoughtful, user-friendly approach. Organized in chapters dealing with major activities, this volume generates understanding through numerous examples and practical applications drawn from research and development chemistry. The authors concentrate on principles and interpretation rather than formal derivation and proof, and adopt the unifying theme that statistics and chemometrics are essentially extensions of the logical processes used every day by chemists. Thus, they allow a greater understanding of problems more quickly and easily than purely intuitive methods.

Book Description
Principles of Sequence Stratigraphy provides an in-depth coverage and impartial assessment of all current ideas and models in the field of sequence stratigraphy. Even though widely popular among all groups interested in the analysis of sedimentary basin fills, both in academia and in the industry, sequence stratigraphy is yet a difficult undertaking due to an overwhelming jargon and the persistence of conflicting approaches as to how the sequence stratigraphic method should be applied to the rock record. This textbook examines the relationship between such conflicting approaches from the perspective of a unifying platform, demonstrating that sufficient common ground exists to eliminate terminology barriers and to facilitate communication between all practitioners of sequence stratigraphy.
This work is not only a review of past and current literature, but also includes key original viewpoints and is illustrated with new graphic material and numerous field examples of outcrop, core, well log and 3D seismic data in full colour. The book is addressed to anyone interested in understanding and applying the method of sequence stratigraphic analysis, from students to geologists, geophysicists and reservoir engineers. Sequence stratigraphy remains the most recent paradigm in the broad field of sedimentary geology, with tremendous potential to deciphering the record of global change and to improving the success of economic exploration.
* Offers theoretical guidelines of how the facies and time relationships are expected to be under specific circumstances such as subsidence patterns, sediment supply, topographic gradients, etc.
* Contains numerous high-quality and full-color diagrams, photographs and illustrations, virtually on every aid in comprehension of the subject
* Features a dedicated chapter on discussions and conclusions incorporating all previous chapters with references, basic principles and strategies
* Provides an extensive list of references for further reading, as well as an author and subject index for quick information access
