Book Description
The field of sleep medicine is growing rapidly, and the clinical pharmacology of sleep is gaining much attention from sleep physicians. Many new drugs are in the process of being developed and tested for their possible usefulness in the treatment of sleep disorders. The opportunity for further advancement in this field is very promising.
This volume covers the clinical and pharmacological treatment of several important sleep disorders such as insomnia, sleep apnea, narcolepsy, restless legs syndrome, and periodic limb movement syndrome. It further addresses the use of sleep medications in children, adolescents, and in the elderly. It offers a comprehensive overview of the currently available hypnotic medications and covers aspects of chronopharmacology and its implications for the pharmacology of sleep. It also reviews the basic science of sleep and sleep disorders, and thus the potential development of new pharmacological approaches.

Customer Reviews:
Long overdue.......2003-10-03
An international panel of contributors give us an overview of the present situation in sea ice research. It covers the physical and chemical properties of sea ice and its role in the global climate. A large part of the book is given to the imoprtance of sea ice in marine biology. That is an area long overlooked by textbooks.
Book Description
Discover and explore worlds containing unexpected life.
As some scientists search for life on the frozen planet of Mars, others are discovering life in unexpected places here on Earth.
Frozen Oceans follows the expeditions of polar scientists in the Arctic and Antarctic as they investigate the life found in and around the ice caps, which cover up to 13 percent of the Earth's surface.
Every year during the harsh polar winter, the surface of the ocean freezes, forming a temporary ice layer called pack ice, or sea ice. The Antarctic is the site of the greatest seasonal event on Earth. In March, the air temperatures drop to as low as -40°F, the ocean, which turns to ice at 28.7°F, starts freezing at the incredible average rate of 2.22 square miles per minute!
This is the first book to explain in non-technical terms and show with color photography the abundance of life on, in and under the ice.
Topics include:
- The nature of pack ice
- Pack ice regions of the world
- Life within a block of ice
- Microbiology inside the ice
- Mammals, birds and ice.
Scientists are continually being surprised by the abundance of life where no life was expected. For many years, ice was seen as an obstacle to exploration and a threat to life. The ice is now perceived as central to global ocean circulation as well as global climate patterns.
Frozen Oceans is a must for anyone with an interest in the polar regions, marine biology and the Earth's environment.
Customer Reviews:
Phenomenally Informative.......2005-11-03
For a book of this size (just over 200 pgs) it contains a fascinating amount of information on an incredibly interesting subject. The breadth and depth of information covered in the space of so few pages is astounding and yet the author doesn't skimp on details. Should appeal to a wide and educated audience. It's written at a level that neither speaks down to the reader nor trys to overwhelm or impress, but merely inform. Much more could be shared, but I would simply encourage the reader to purchase the book and see for themselves. Outstanding!

Book Description
This unique group of authors from the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute in St. Petersburg, Russia, have all achieved individual doctoral theses on various aspects of Arctic and Antarctic research. Ivan Frolov, whose speciality is oceanography, has completed a study of Arctic Ice Cover, researching ice distribution in the seas of the Russian Arctic and has authored 70 scientific papers.
Zalman Gudkovich's main area of research remains ice motion in the Arctic Ocean and seas of the Siberian Shelf, and he has contributed to 150 scientific publications and proceedings. Vladimir Radionov, whose international research projects have included a joint US/Russian Arctic atlas and a major Arctic climatology project, is the co-author of some 60 scientific related publications. Alexander Shirochkov has participated in three winter long Antarctic expeditions and is now head of the Ionospheric Research Laboratory of the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute. He has more than 100 scientific papers to his name and has contributed to several collective scientific books. Leonid Timokhov also worked on the joint US/Russian Arctic Atlas and the Arctic Climatology project and is the author and co-author of some 120 scientific publications and proceedings. Book Description
The Southern Ocean supports a teeming array of life, ranging from microscopic plants to mighty whales. Whilst our knowledge of the biology of these waters has been accumulating since the first voyages of discovery in the eighteenth century, there is yet to be a comprehensive, single-author synthesis of the current state of that knowledge. This book sets out to correct that deficiency. The volume opens with a description of the physico-chemical environment, which is followed by a logical sequence of chapters, beginning with primary production and ending with the higher consumers. Chapters on selected ecosystems and ecosystem dynamics then precede a final section which considers the exploitation, conservation and management of the ocean's resources. An epilogue provides a fascinating insight into the changing view of the Southern Ocean ecosystem over the past twenty years.
