Just Perfect.......2007-06-23
I got this and some other books to get my son ready for HS Honors Chemistry over the Summer. It is just the right level. The many detailed worked examples are clear and there are lots of extra problems to practice on. I looked at quite a few others including Schaum's more general "General Chemistry" and this was the best.
With this book, I became self-taught in chemistry.......2007-02-02
A few years out of high school, I was working construction and decided that it was time to go to college. After doing an agonizing reappraisal of my finances, I realized that I could not afford to either take the time off work or pay a great deal for tuition. I had recently read a brief article in an issue of Reader's Digest that described the College Level Examination Program (CLEP) tests. Realizing that this would be an option for college credit and then discovering that there was a CLEP test for chemistry, I purchased this book and began studying.
It was very hard at first, balancing the chemical equations was a form of algebra problem far beyond those I was familiar with. Nevertheless, I persevered in two ways. I managed to work my way through the book doing nearly all of the problems and I also passed the CLEP chemistry test with flying colors. I then went on to get a chemistry major and only once did I slip below an A.
While I don't belittle the amount of time and effort I put forth, it was the quality of this book that got me through. While the problems were hard, they were still doable and once done, you have learned the material. No higher praise can be given.
Excellent textbook.......2006-08-31
This is a superb self help textbook which provides concise, clear and easy to understand material. The solutions are really simple to follow. I truly recommend to anyone who needs a guide to his or her chemistry studies.
Excellent self-contained inexpensive chemistry textbook.......2006-07-15
This has got to be just about one of the best Schaum's outlines available, and that is saying a lot, since there are many good ones. I picked up a copy for self study due to a domino effect - I was attempting to learn molecular biology, which caused me to review my college biology, which in turn meant remembering my college chemistry.
I bought this book and read and worked through the exercises from chapter one on quantities and units through chapter 17, acids and bases. At no time did I need to seek out another textbook to solve the problems. Everything you need as far as "lecture" is in the outline. All included tables, figures, definitions, explanations, and example problems are complete and excellent. None of the mathematics involved in chemistry calculations is difficult, but the rules can get involved and you need a good book like this one to explain all of the variations involved in solving problems.
Chapters 1 through 14 cover what you would normally learn in a two semester sequence of college chemistry. From that point on in the outline there are a series of miscellaneous topics. Of course, the one I appreciated the most was chapter 15 on organic chemistry and biochemistry, because it directly relates to what I needed to know so I could read the references to chemistry in the biology books without scratching my head. There are also additional chapters on thermodynamics and chemistry, acids and bases, metal ions, electricity and chemistry, and the chemistry of nuclear processes.
Whether you are a college chemistry student, or someone like me who needs to review the topic, I strongly advise you to pick up a copy of this inexpensive yet extremely clear and complete Schaum's outline. It also serves as a great reference after you finish your studies.
This is what a chemistry help book should be!.......2006-02-14
Over the passed few months, I have been buying a lot of chemistry help books to help me survive college chemistry. I have bought the more popular ones like Chemistry for Dummies and the Complete Idiot's Guide to Chemistry. Both of these books are ok, but the part that they really lack is that they didn't adequately help me in the math of chemistry. In fact, it's actually kind of misleading to read these books, and then take a chemistry class. Because these books brush over the math of chemistry so much that I was led to believe that chemistry didn't have that much math in it. But nothing could be further from the truth! When I took my first chemistry class, I felt like I had more math than I did in my actual math class. And, unfortunately, both Chemistry for Dummies and the Complete Idiot's Guide to Chemistry didn't help out too much in this area (and to make matters worse, the FEW examples of math based chemistry problems they had were ridiculously easy.)
I was fed up. I had spent money on two chemistry books that were near worthless as far as helping me out with the math. And when it came to chemistry 102, Chemistry for Dummies might as well have been cast into a fire.. as it doesn't seem to cover much of anything passed chemistry 101 (just look up "enthalpy" in the index... it doesn't even merit a mention in Chemistry for Dummies!). After I told my professor about my problem, he showed me Schaum's Outlines for College Chemistry. I thought, "Oh great, another worthless chemistry book." But then when I flipped through it, it was like a dream come true. Not only does it cover just about every single topic from chemistry 101 AND 102, it also has page after page after page of examples of math based chemistry problems, and it breaks the problems down so that I could teach myself how to work the math problems.
And incase anyone is wondering, yes it does explain the main topics in chemistry. So it's not just a straight math book. The explanations are a little dry compared to Chemistry for Dummies and the Idiot's Guide to Chemistry, but this book is so infinitely awesome in every other way, that this is easily forgivable (besides, the Dummies and Idiot's book may be more fun to read, but they do so at the sacrifice of information, and are often overly simplistic).
As far as I'm concerned this is a TRUE chemistry help book. It is by far the most complete chemistry help book I have ever seen. Remember this: chemistry is not a spectator sport. It is a lot of math, and math must be practiced over and over until it is mastered. Chemistry is not a subject like biology where all you have to do is "read it and memorize it". If you're looking for a good chemistry help book, then I don't think you have to look any further than Schaum's College Chemistry.

Don't waste your time.......2006-11-06
I don't own this book, but I browsed through it, and believe me that did not take long. This book is an embarrassment to the fine Schaum's Outline series. For one thing, the words "Easy Outline" and "College Physics" don't belong in the same book title. There are only six chapters in this book, and the book glosses over the meat of College Physics with the most simplistic of explanations and no examples to speak of. If you want to learn college physics buy the old reliable "Schaum's Outline of College Physics" now in its tenth edition. It has good explanations, meaty examples, and many solved as well as unsolved problems so you can really grasp the concepts of the first two semesters of college physics. What really confuses me is that two of the three authors of this book wrote the good Schaum's outline of College Physics as well as the excellent Schaum's Outline of Optics, so they DO know how to write meaningful study guides. Why they put their names on this disaster I'll never know. I would say that this particular book is not even good enough for high school students studying physics. Avoid it completely.
Useless........2005-05-30
Well, I bought this book by mistake! I wanted the non easy version. Unless you want to pretend learn physics in two weeks you'd better buy the same authors and name book but non easy version! You can learn physics with that 416 pages one but not with this 138 one.

Review with no title.......2000-08-12
This review was based on the 2000 version, the newest one, of the College Chemistry. After studying this as a guildline to the subject of Chemistry, I found out that this book had very good and short explanations of all the important concepts. However, this study guild's value had been destoried because the amount of misprints and errors in the example problems. This book seemed to be rushed to meet the 2000 year time. Therefore, the mistakes in it was overlooked. To learn concepts, the book is a very good aid, however to look at the examples, it is very poor and sad to see those simple mistakes.

Book Description
This book is a unique compendium and synthesis of the cumulative knowledge of more than 100 years of discovery and study of North American tertiary mammals. The potentially most valuable contribution of this book is the detailed information of the distribution in time and space of each species at fossil localities, recorded in a uniform scheme, so that each chapter provides the same level of information. Thirty six chapters are devoted to a particular family or order, written by leading North American authorities, including discussion of anatomical features, systematics, and paleobiology. Three introductory chapters summarize information on the geological time scale, Tertiary vegetation, and Pleistocene events, and four summary chapters integrate systematic and biogeographic information for higher taxa. This book will serve as a unique data base for continuing studies in faunal diversification and change, and for questions such as how changing biogeography and climates influenced the evolution of mammalian communities. It will be an invaluable addition to the libraries of paleontologists and zoologists.
Customer Reviews:
very good but very overpriced.......2004-07-21
A very useful book for essentially all the genera of mammals in the groups listed in the title. The two things that kept me from giving it 5 stars are; it is VERY overpriced, aside from libraries, few can afford it, also the listings of localities are done a bit ackwardly. Overall a very useful resource.

One to Own.......2003-07-11
Lois and Jerry Jacka do an EXCELLENT job with every project they undertake. Certainly this book is no exception. The text by Lois is insightful and well written. Jerry's photography and layout are some of the best. With an historical introduction by Clara Lee Tanner, the book is COMPLETE from Preface to page 206. Works by many of today's MASTERS are illustrated and a brief description of each item is included. The number of Native American artists is far too extensive to list, so may a half dozen suffice: Charles Loloma, Grace Medicine Flower, Rondina Huma, Jesse Monongye, Loren Phillips and Doug Hyde. There are so many more! Since the book is now OUT OF PRINT, grab a copy; it truly is one to own.
Knowlegeable Text and Outstanding Photography.......1999-04-27
This is an excellent sourcebook for those wanting to learn more about quality Native art. The information provided will help you learn about the various associations that work with Native artists as well as wonderful insights into many of the artists themselves. "Anything by Lois and Jerry Jacka" is the recommendation given in the conclusion of The Native American Indian Artist Directory (a book that gives you actual contact information, i.e. phone numbers, mailing addresses, etc.) for good reason. The quality of their work has been recognized for many years. If you attend the major Native art events in the Southwest you're likely to see them there, keeping current on the latest in Native arts. One more terrific publication from the Lois & Jerry Jacka team!

In the smart Q&A roundtable that opens this stylish monograph of new and in-progress projects from the long-established megafirm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, one of the principals notes, with mixed sentiments, "We have been called the IBM of architecture." It's an astute comparison: both companies' names were, and remain, synonymous with the behemoth-like face of stolid midcentury corporate America; both lost their near-total sovereignty over their respective markets in the '70s and '80s as their bureaucratic hubris spiraled out of control and they lost business to smaller, nimbler, more inventive upstarts; and both have managed to reenter the game in the 1990s by breaking down into more intimate collaborative "pods" and putting client needs (or what IBM calls "business solutions" in its self-conscious new-economy parlance) before their own rigid visions of "correct" design.
The new face of SOM (they like that surname-obscuring acronym because it plays down personal egoism in favor of collaboration, flexibility, and reliability) is vividly illuminated in SOM Evolutions. The book is an overview of 23 very recent or in-progress works that are helping this firm of nine offices worldwide with a total staff of 850 prove it can design massive, multiuse corporate/public sites that are as sensitive to history, context, civics, and use as anything from those new-school shops. And all the while it maintains the urban gravitas that became its signature in the postwar years and clearly marked any SOM edifice--whether or not you thought it was ugly, cold, or impractical. In an admittedly very reductive word, this seems to mean that whereas most of SOM's oeuvre from the '50s and '60s were all rectangles, right angles, and impenetrable slabs of concrete, all of it rendered in black and white or their half-tones, their '90s and early-21st-century work is marked by slender-beamed steel exoskeletons girding luminous light-as-air glass envelopes, as well as multiple volumes, differentiated in all sorts of clever ways, often dazzlingly curvilinear and inspired by the traditional architecture of a given site's region.
And even if SOM's name doesn't immediately evoke the cutting edge anymore, clearly the big spenders of the world still put their money on it; the scale of most of the projects shown here is muy grande, to say the least. Featured are London's Exchange House; Lisbon's port-side multipurpose Atlantico Pavilion; Shanghai's Jin Mao Building, a pagoda-inspired office tower that was the tallest building in China upon its completion in 1999; new international terminals for airports in San Francisco and (even more breathtaking, with its tree-filled processional scheme) Tel Aviv; Washington, D.C.'s 2001 K Street, fashioned at the client's request after the firm's famous Pepsi-Cola building; and the Kuwait Policy Academy in Kuwait City, slung out over 75 acres of desert and conceived along the principles of pre-Islamic space organization.
Two projects in New York City that are being closely watched by the design world are also featured here: SOM's bold retrofit of a 1913 McKim Mead & White neoclassical treasure into a new Penn Station, and its design for a multiuse complex flanking half of Columbus Circle, where Midtown, the West Side and Central Park converge.
Unfortunately, many of works in the monograph are not yet completed, and at this point models and computer-generated images will have to suffice to tell the tale of SOM's confident new strides into the 21st century. Interspersed with the color images of new and forthcoming projects are black-and-white period photos of the projects (not including Lever House, oddly) that made SOM's name, such as Chicago's Hancock Center (1969), NYC's Manufacturer's Hanover Trust Company (1954), and the international arrivals building at JFK Airport (1958). There's even the Plainsboro, New Jersey, industrial reactor research center (also '58), with one building designed to look unmistakably like a huge, shiny missile head aimed skyward, proving that even imperious SOM wasn't immune to the now-kitschy design imagery of the atomic age.
Admittedly, some of these first-wave projects look impossibly cold and brutish by contemporary standards--especially such concrete-slab fortresses as 1971's LBJ Library at the University of Texas--but with the current resurgence of international- and midcentury-modern-inspired design, many of them look hip, fresh, sexy, and ironic in a way that their self-serious creators probably never intended. --Timothy Murphy
Book Description
Skidmore, Owings & Merrill have been practising architecture for more than sixty years and are amongst the most well-known architectural firms worldwide, with offices in Chicago, New York, San Francisco, Hong Kong and London. They first attracted attention in the 1950s when they created notable corporate buildings such as Lever House in New York, and went on to gain acclaim with their engineering achievements. The technology developed by SOM made buildings such as Sears Tower in Chicago possible - for many years the highest building in the world. This volume presents a selection of those recent projects which are of a particularly high aesthetic and technical standard. Amongst the projects included are: International Terminal at San Francisco International Airport, Jin Mao Building in Shanghai, Hong Kong Convention Center, Industrial and Commercial Bank of China in Beijing, and Changi Airport in Singapore.

Do Not Waste Your Time or Money.......2001-08-02
This book is very poorly produced. It looks like it was all run off a copy machine. The reproductions of the photographs are very poor and difficult to make out. Not clear at all. This is just a poorly constructed book from a quality stand-point all around. Not what I expected.
A major disappointment..........2001-02-17
I work in the Chicago office of SOM, and I gotta say that this book is a major disappointment. Key projects (past and present) have been left out, there are virtually no interiors projects shown (a nearly criminal act; since SOM defined the practice of interior architecture), and the photos are positively horrible.
Grainy, out of focus, and poorly framed - the photos are the worst part about the book. You won't believe just how bad they are until you see them.
I would strongly recommend the new book "Skidmore, Owings & Merrill LLP - Architecture and Urbanism 1995-2000" published by Images Publishing. I have every single book every published on SOM's work, and this is the most stunning. It's brand new though, and might not yet be widely available.

Book Description
This book examines case studies of North American Quaternary mammalian evolution within the larger domain of modern evolutionary theory. It presents previously unpublished studies of a variety of taxa (xenarthrans, rodents, carnivores, ungulates) examined over several temporal scales, from a few thousand years during the Holocene to millions of years of late Pliocene and Pleistocene time. Different organizational levels are represented, from mosaic population variation, to a synopsis of Quaternary evolution of an entire order (Rodentia). In addition to specific case histories, the book includes purely theoretical and methodological contributions, for example, on the statistical recognition of stasis in the fossil record, new ways to calculate evolutionary rates, and the use of digital image analysis in the study of dental ontogeny. Perhaps the most important aspect of the studies reported in this book is that they span the time between the "ecological moment" and "deep time". Modern taxa can be traced back into the fossil record, and variation among extant taxa can be used as a control against which variation in the extinct ones can be understood.

Book Description
The transition from the Eocene to the Oligocene epoch, occurring approximately 47 to 30 million years ago, was the most dramatic episode of climatic and biotic change since the demise of the dinosaurs. The mild tropical climates of the Paleocene and early Eocene were replaced by modern climatic conditions and extremes, including glacial ice in Antarctica. The first part of this book summarizes the latest information in the dating and correlation of the strata of late middle Eocene through early Oligocene age in North America. The second part reviews almost all the important terrestrial reptiles and mammals found near the Eocene-Oligocene boundary, in the White River Chronofauna--from the turtles, snakes and lizards to the common rodents, carnivores, oreodonts and deer of the Badlands. This is the first comprehensive treatment of these topics in over sixty years, and will be invaluable to vertebrate paleontologists, geologists, mammalogists and evolutionary biologists.

Book Description
First appearing about 40 million years ago in North America, rhinoceroses diversified into an incredible array of taxa, with a variety of ecologies that don't resemble any of the five living species. They ranged from delicate long-legged dog-sized forms, to huge hippo-like forms that apparently lived in rivers and lakes. Including a complete systematic review, and discussions of biogeography, evolution and paleoecology, this book summarizes our current knowledge of North American rhinos and constitutes the most complete reference available.

Book Description
In a sweeping work tracing the idea of race for more than three centuries, Audrey Smedley shows that "race" is a cultural invention that has been used variously and opportunistically since the eighteenth century. Race was not a product of science but a folk classification reflecting a new form of social stratification and a rationalization for inequality among the peoples of North America. This second edition adds new materials to some early chapters and expands its coverage of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries with additional analyses of science's role in the preservation of race ideology through IQ tests, the rise of Nazi race ideology, and the beginning disintegration of the racial worldview after World War II. The first edition was named a 1994 Outstanding Book on Human Rights in North America by the Gustavus Myers Center.
Customer Reviews:
Socio-Cultural view of racism and it's origins.......1998-10-02
Dr. Smedley is not only a wonderful teacher- but an excellent writer as well! In this book she summarizes the evolution of racism and traces it through the bonds of culture to how we percieve it today. It is very interesting, eye opening, though provoking reading! Excellent!!

Book Description
William D'Arcy McNickle was born in 1904 in Montana to a father of Scottish-Irish heritage and a French-Canadian Cree mother. His mixed-blood heritage and his parents' rocky marriage and subsequent divorce would strongly influence the future versions of his first novel The Surrounded.
The Hungry Generations is an early, handwritten version of McNickle's groundbreaking and semi-autobiographical novel The Surrounded and consists of three distinct parts. Part one is set in McNickle's native Montana and has the protagonist, Archilde, reconciling with his father. This part corresponds most closely to the The Surrounded. Part two takes place in Paris where Archilde meets Claudia and her family and explores the community of the American expatriate artists. This section was cut out entirely during revisions of the novel. Part three shows Archilde as a farmer on his father's land in Montana and his arrest and trial for the murder of the game warden.
The Hungry Generations is a social document providing insight into Indian-White marriages at the turn of the twentieth century, the life of the mixed-blood children of these marriages, and the attempts to assimilate them into mainstream American life. Partially autobiographical, the novel serves as a mirror of McNickle's adolescence on the Flathead Reservation in Montana and his experiences in Europe.
Birgit Hans offers an extensive introduction to The Hungry Generations and presents the novel here as it was originally written in the 1930s. This manuscript version of The Hungry Generations is located in the archives of The Newberry Library in Chicago and has never before been published.
This study of the early, unpublished novel, The Hungry Generations, explains how subsequent events in McNickle's life lead the author to eventually create The Surrounded, a classic of American Indian literature.
