Customer Reviews:
Excellent Text on Analytical Chemistry.......2007-06-03
This review refers to the fourth edition of this book.
I bought this book at the Stanford University Bookstore as a reference text for quantitative analytical chemistry. Overall, I'd say it's an excellent book which covers all the fundamentals of the subject. It also contains a great deal of useful data. The editing is excellent (I didn't notice any typos) and so are the graphics (tables, charts, pictures).
Mind you, this subject is so big that only a small fraction can be covered even in a large tome like this. But the author has used the space available to him well.
I note that the reviewers who do not like this book seem to be students while those who love it are teachers or experienced engineers (like myself). I suppose that means that the author is assuming a certian level of knowledge on the part of his readers and is not spending a large amount of time explaining basic concepts.
most student friendly of all the analytical chem books.......2007-04-16
So, you're considering either buying or adopting this text for intro analytical chemistry? Good choice!
This is the easiest, most straightforward, book on the market for students. It's been that way through many editions. It was a breath of fresh air (in comparison to Skoog) when it was first published.
Your other choices are "Fundamentals of Analytical Chemistry" by Skoog et al.(ISBN 0534417965) and "Analytical Chemistry" by Gary D. Christian (ISBN 0471214728).
Skoog is good it's just that he can't match Harris for clarity.
Christian doesn't change much. The end-of-chapter problems are usually just re-numbered. It's OK, though.
Fortunately, whichever you choose, none can be considered deficient.
One thing I don't like about these intro books: Why do they include all this instrumental analysis material? The instrumental analysis texts do a better job with these subjects anyway and all the extra chapters make the books needlessly heavy.
The intro books should just focus on basics like acid/base/complexometric/redox titrations, gravimetric analysis, sample prep., extractions, etc.
Harris (along with Bertolucci) has also written a true classic in the field of molecular spectroscopy: "Symmetry and Spectroscopy: An Introduction to Vibrational and Electronic Spectroscopy". Get that, too.

Why can't all chem books be like this?.......2006-12-20
The explanations and reasoning behind doing certain procedures and calculations in this book is outstandingly good (most of the time). Each chapter provides detailed workthroughs of problems with easy to understand explanations and in a wide enough variety of ways for one to be able to do most of the problems in the back of the chapter without TOO much trouble. The life saver though is the separate optional solutions manual which provides ALL of the answers (even stepwise) to the chapter problems (GET THIS BOOK!). The chapters involving instrumental analysis could use some improvement in clarity, but the other chapters are very well written.
Just About Identical as the 6th edition.......2006-12-12
I just took a class that required this textbook, and I used the 6th edition instead of the 7th, and there was only one difference.... in the 6th edition, 2 topics were seperated into 2 different chapters, and in the 7th the two topics were combined into one chapter... If your a student and need this book for class, save yourself some money and buy the 6th edition. The word and homework problems are identical.
Textbook case.......2006-11-12
Item was delivered quickly and in very good condition. No problems were experienced. Good job and thanks.

A must have to truly understand the class work........2006-03-24
The every answer is shown step by step. If your professor assigns homework then this book not only makes sure you will get full credit on your work but you will understand it too.
Quantitative Chem Analysis.......2005-10-23
I am currently enrolled in Analytical Chem. Owning the solutions manual helps me figure out the work and process for problems that I would have normally left black. This not only helps my grade, but helps me gain a better understanding of the material.
Book Description
Chemical process quantitative risk analysis (CPQRA) as applied to the CPI was first fully described in the first edition of this CCPS Guidelines book. This second edition is packed with information reflecting advances in this evolving methodology, and includes worked examples on a CD-ROM. CPQRA is used to identify incident scenarios and evaluate their risk by defining the probability of failure, the various consequences and the potential impact of those consequences. It is an invaluable methodology to evaluate these when qualitative analysis cannot provide adequate understanding and when more information is needed for risk management. This technique provides a means to evaluate acute hazards and alternative risk reduction strategies, and identify areas for cost-effective risk reduction. There are no simple answers when complex issues are concerned, but CPQRA2 offers a cogent, well-illustrated guide to applying these risk-analysis techniques, particularly to risk control studies.
Special Details: Includes CD-ROM with example problems worked using Excel and Quattro Pro. For use with Windows 95, 98, and NT.

Guidelines for chemical process quantitative risk anaysis.......2006-11-21
I expected more reliability data in the book, but the revision of the several aspects of risk analysis are quite good.
Book Description
Very few chemistry books survive to a sixth edition having had a lifetime of sixty years. Dr. Arthur I. Vogel's classic introduction to analytical methods has provided generations of chemists with a basis for the teaching, learning and application of analytical chemistry.
Analysts need to understand the concepts behind methods and Vogel's Quantitative Chemical Analysis provides clear introductions to all the key analytical methods including those involving advanced computerised equipment available in many analytical laboratories. The editors have built further on the work of Dr Vogel, modernising the approach while retaining the analytical concepts and ideas which were built into the original work.
This new edition (the first for ten years) has been extensively revised to take into account developments in instrumental procedures and coupled techniques whilst maintaining the book's focus on quantitative chemical and problem-specific analyses. With excellent cross-referencing this book provides a wealth of examples and tables of data.

an Undergraduate's perspective.......2005-05-15
I have just finished my first course in analytical chemistry. I was armed with the recommended textbook by Harris and also my nerdy instincts told me this book (Vogel's) is also handy.
Well for one it is not an introductory textbook, it has all the relevant information an individual can ever need at any (note ANY) level of analytical chemistry. Whether it be work, postgrad or like myself the crappy years of undergraduate study.
This book has several strong points and if used in the appropriate context will serve to be the best analytical book money can buy...ever.... Firstly it is small, light and hardcover (I am so surprised that they fit all the information that they did) so its good for brushing up on exams and taking to the lab whilst doing lab work.
Secondly it is appropriately organized with a first chapter introducing fundamentals (not basics btw) of analytical chemistry from theoretical POV.
It later organizes itself into genre of technique i.e. chemmometry, chromatography and spectroscopy to name the important few. The book provides adequate information on context of these tests, the chemistry behind the tests and how they are supposed to be conducted.
The material presented here is succinct, straightforward and so it makes the best reference. Its basically the technical and practical dictionary for analytical chemists. Vogel's has an established name for a long time; it has provided the best textual resources on practical organic chemistry and also inorganic chemical analysis. This is a truly remarkable addition to the collection that supersedes all other practical chemistry textbook. It is ideal for researchers, medical researchers, students, lecturers, lab technicians and anyone with basic knowledge of general chemistry who wants to excel in analytical chemistry.
This is really relevant after the first introductory course to analytical chemistry; you will find Harris redundant afterwards and would probably stick to this. I suggest buy this and borrow Harris or any other prescribed textbook from your library. Once you know something than its a matter of refreshing that information which this book most definitely does.

Book Description
This volume highlights the main procedures for assessing the regional risks resulting from dangerous goods storage, and transportation by means of different systems (i.e., road, rail, ship, and pipeline).
The information in the book is based on a wide range of references and studies. The main procedural steps involved in quantitative risk analysis for transportation systems are supported by relevant methods of risk assessment, as recognized at an international level. The book gives an overview of the criteria and guidelines applicable to the implementation of risk assessments and management at different stages.
Chapter 1 describes the environmental and safety factors to consider when performing a transportation risk analysis for a region. Chapter 2 presents risk definitions and the methodology for analyzing transportation risks in a complex area. Chapter 3 presents general information about truck accidents and their consequences, and reviews the risk presented by road tunnels. Chapter 4 deals with transportation of hazardous materials by rail. Chapter 5 is concerned with the assessment of transportation risks on water ways. Chapter 6 furnishes a description of the transport pipelines for natural gas and petroleum products and describes the situation in Switzerland. Chapter 7 presents a compilation of statistical data related to accidents and the movement of dangerous goods. Chapter 8 is devoted to the description of data bases and computer support for risk assessment. Chapter 9 deals with integrated approaches for regional risk assessment and safety management with special emphasis to the transportation of hazardous materials. Chapter 10 presents several relevant case studies and miscellaneous information.
Book Description
Quantitative Risk Analysis is a powerful tool used to help manage risk and improve safety. When used appropriately, it provides a rational basis for evaluating process safety and comparing alternative safety improvements. This guide, an update of an earlier American Chemistry Council (ACC) publication utilizing the "hands-on" experience of CPI risk assessment practitioners and safety professionals involved with the CCPS and ACC, explains how managers and users can make better-informed decisions about QRA, and how plant engineers and process designers can better understand, interpret and use the results of a QRA in their plant.

Book Description
It is now becoming recognized in the measurement community that it is as important to communicate the uncertainty related to a specific measurement as it is to report the measurement itself. Without knowing the uncertainty, it is impossible for the users of the result to know what confidence can be placed in it; it is also impossible to assess the comparability of different measurements of the same parameter. This volume collects 20 outstanding papers on the topic, mostly published from 1999-2002 in the journal "Accreditation and Quality Assurance." They provide the rationale for why it is important to evaluate and report the uncertainty of a result in a consistent manner. They also describe the concept of uncertainty, the methodology for evaluating uncertainty, and the advantages of using suitable reference materials. Finally, the benefits to both the analytical laboratory and the user of the results are considered.
