ASIN: 0023364505 |
Book Description
Designed to show readers how to use chemical principles in solving geological problems, this book emphasizes a quantitative approach to problem solving and demonstrates how chemical principles control geologic processes in atomic and large-scale environments. The book starts with basic principles and emphasizes quantitative methods of problem-solving. It uses the principles of isotope geology to enhance the understanding of appropriate geochemical subject areas. The book also examines the geochemical processes that affect the chemical composition of surface water and that determine its quality for human consumption. For anyone interested in Geochemistry or Geology.Customer Reviews:

The Asian Monsoon (Springer Praxis Books / Environmental Sciences) (Springer Praxis Books / Environmental Sciences)
Bin Wang Manufacturer: Springer ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover Similar Items:
ASIN: 3540406107 |
Book Description
Satellite observations and computing technology have advanced our understanding of the monsoon climate enormously in the last two decades. The author provides an update of the knowledge gained over this period, presenting the modern morphology and the physical principles of monsoon climate variation on all time scales ranging from intraseasonal to tectonic time scales. He brings new ideas that can be expected to markedly improve the prediction of monsoon climate, and includes contributions by experts who expand our understanding of the monsoon environment by their study of paleoclimate records, who present evidence of human influences on monsoon climate, and who describe the links of the monsoon to the economy and to human health.
This is a comprehensive interdisciplinary text book summarizing new knowledge of Asian monsoon climate variability, dynamics, modeling, and prediction from intraseasonal to geological time scales, and human influence and its links to environmetal/economic issues.

East Asian Monsoon (World Scientific Series on Meteorology of East Asia)
Manufacturer: World Scientific Publishing Company ProductGroup: Book Binding: Hardcover ASIN: 9812387692 |
Book Description
The East Asian summer monsoon has complex space and time structures that are distinct from the South Asian summer monsoon. It covers both subtropics and midlatitudes and its rainfall tends to be concentrated in rain belts that stretch for many thousands of kilometers and affect China, Japan, Korea, and the surrounding areas. The circulation of the East Asian winter monsoon encompasses a large meridional domain with cold air outbreaks emanating from the Siberian high and penetrates deeply into the equatorial Maritime Continent region, where the center of maximum rainfall has long been recognized as a major planetary scale heat source that provides a significant amount of energy which drives the global circulation during boreal winter. The East Asian summer monsoon is also closely linked with the West Pacific summer monsoon. Both are part of the global climate system and are affected by El NinoBSouthern Oscillation (ENSO) and surface temperature variations in the western Pacific and surrounding oceans, the tropospheric biennial oscillation, and the South Asian summer monsoon. In addition, typhoons in the western North Pacific are most active during the East Asian summer monsoon. They may be considered as a component of the East Asian summer monsoon as they contribute substantial amounts of rainfall and have major impacts on the region.
Because of its impacts on nearly one-third of the world's population and on the global climate system (including effects on the climate change), the study of the East Asian monsoon has received increased attention both in East Asian countries and in the United States. This book presents reviews of recent research on the subject.

Lim's Poetry Outstanding.......2000-07-03
She was born in Malaysia to Chinese parents, and has lived in both Asia and America. This blend of cultures and languages has given her a unique understanding of the nature of translation, of roots, of travel, and of culture. These are themes she addresses in her poetry.
Her skill with words is considerable, and no two poems resemble each other. There are many voices, many situations. There is humor, horror, urban paranoia, love, and struggle. I treasure this volume as much for its skillful craft as for its tender stories of Asian women.
Her prose afterword, entitled Tongue and Root, an essay on the subject of translation and the English language, is quite wonderful. Excellent for students of linguistics and translation, or of modern Asian history, but I would think anyone interested in the problems of the Third Culture phenomena would find a lot to like in this book.
An essential part of any library of Asian Women's Studies.

A Study of South Asian Monsoon Convection and Tropical Upper Easterly Jet During Northern Summer 1991
Manufacturer: Storming Media ProductGroup: Book Binding: Spiral-bound ASIN: 1423576128 |
Product Description
This is a NAVAL POSTGRADUATE SCHOOL MONTEREY CA report procured by the Pentagon and made available for public release. It has been reproduced in the best form available to the Pentagon. It is not spiral-bound, but rather assembled with Velobinding in a soft, white linen cover. The Storming Media report number is A115423. The abstract provided by the Pentagon follows: This work studies the 1991 northern summer monsoon over India and surrounding areas using Japanese (GMS) and Indian (INSAT) geostationary satellite data, the ECMWF objective re-analysis, and the NMC sea surface temperature analysis. Monthly and weekly mean fields are first used to examine the development of the monsoon over the entire domain and to identify the timing of the onset over India. Latent heat fluxes are shown to be important in the monsoon development process. The relationship between the synoptic variations of a convective index derived from satellite data and the upper tropospheric easterly jet show two possible effects of cumulus convection on the easterly jet. The first is a forcing of the jet maximum near southern India when convection flares up to the north in the monsoon trough. This is believed to be the result of the Coriolis acceleration of the southward outflow of the local Hadley cell. The second is a damping of the upper jet by cumulus momentum transport that occurs at the same location as the jet maximum. This second effect is most clearly shown in regions of strong vertical shear.
