Book Description
As the first modern physical chemistry textbook to cover quantum mechanics before thermodynamics and kinetics, this book provides a contemporary approach to the study of physical chemistry. By beginning with quantum chemistry, students will learn the fundamental principles upon which all modern physical chemistry is built. The text includes a special set of "MathChapters" to review and summarize the mathematical tools required to master the material Thermodynamics is simultaneously taught from a bulk and microscopic viewpoint that enables the student to understand how bulk properties of materials are related to the properties of individual constituent molecules. This new text includes a variety of modern research topics in physical chemistry as well as hundreds of worked problems and examples.

A Third-Rate Book at Best.......2007-10-07
This is one of the poorest textbooks I've ever owned. It is wordy yet it explains very little. And there is one really annoying aspect to this book:
The authors only ever introduce an equation once in the text. From thereon, they refer to that equation as "equation 17-1" or whatever number they designate it. So you're constantly having to turn back pages and entire chapters just to find out what stupid equation they are talking about. They also embed all the important tables within random chapters instead of being in an appendix, so good luck finding any constants or any other figures that would be put in a table. I hate this book with a passion. It has crappy black and white illustrations too. It looks like it was written in the 70's or something.
Physical Chemistry: A Molecular Approach.......2007-10-05
I received the correct book in excellent condition (matching the seller's description) in the timeframe I was told when I purchased it.
Setting the standard for other physical chemistry texts.......2007-07-28
To be succinct:
1) Thorough explanation of each subject.
2) Subjects broken down into manageable chapters.
3) Lots of worked problems.
4) Lots of problems at the end of each chapter.
5) Material presented in a logical, not necessarily historical, fashion.
6) Layout is generally superior to other texts (spacious, not cramped)
7) Get the solutions manual.
Bear in mind most schools teach thermodynamics and kinetics, followed by quantum chemistry. This methodology is merely a reflection of the order of discovery, and not because quantum chemistry necessarily builds on thermo or kinetics. This text teaches quantum first, followed by thermo and kinetics. It's more logical to teach quantum first, but you can jump right into traditional physical chemistry with this text.
Only recommendation:
The publisher should package the book with the solutions manual. I'm a big fan of solutions manuals and a student is somewhat hobbled without one.
Well Approached Text Book for PChem.......2007-06-23
At first, this book - judging from its thickness - scared me. I owned 3 different 3 P-Chem books prior to this. They were dry, hard to comprehend and worst, they had a lot of typos. So when I saw this text by McQuarrie, I thought that it'd be one of those books that i had to buy for class.
After reading the first chapter, I could tell that this text was worth buying. Not only that it gives me the essential mathematical skills to approach p-chem, but it also informs me the applications of p-chem in both chemistry and biology. Best of all, it has the least 'typos' in comparison to other text.
The only drawback about this book is the paper. It's very thin - and i understand why. If it were printed in a regular paper, this book would have been twice as thick.
This text is the standard text at UC Berkeley.
another "microscopic" book on Physical Chemistry.......2007-04-20
Just wanted to alert readers of these reviews that there is another Physical Chemistry book that follows the 'microscopic' approach of McQuarrie and Simon:
Principles of Physical Chemistry: Understanding Atoms, Molecules and Supramolecular Machines by Hans Kuhn, Horst-Dieter Försterling.
No end-of-chapter problems in this however. Link: Principles of Physical Chemistry: Understanding Atoms, Molecules and Supramolecular Machines
I've also reviewed Laidler et al. which some may find useful:
Physical Chemistry
Book Description
For two-semester or three-quarter courses in General Chemistry.
The author’s goal in writing this book is to deliver the depth of coverage faculty want with the accessibility and clarity that students need for success. Nivaldo J. Tro’s Chemistry: A Molecular Approach explains difficult chemical concepts in a concise and clear student-centered manner while also providing faculty with the flexibility to go more deeply into many key, often neglected topics, such as electron diffraction, molecular orbital theory, and free-energy changes under non-standard conditions. Chemistry is presented visually throughmulti-level images (macroscopic, molecular and symbolic representations), which helps students see the connections among the formulas (symbolic), the world around them (macroscopic), and the atoms and molecules that make up the world (molecular). Every aspect of this book focuses students on recognizing that the behavior of matter is based on the behavior of atoms and molecules.

An engaging and well organized new text for general chemistry.......2007-01-24
This is a new textbook for general chemistry. Yes, there a quite a number of general chemistry texts and they all cover roughly the same general material. They differ more in how they organize the material, illustrate it, and their method of helping the student develop a solid understanding and command of this basic material. The student not only needs to learn the basic facts of chemistry, she needs to learn how to think about it so when she looks at the world, she can see and understand the issues as they relate to this vital science.
Dr. Tro begins this book by explaining how the text was developed and provides instructions for the student on how to make the most of the book. I liked this a great deal. He starts the book by providing what he thinks is the most important scientific idea in all of human knowledge: "the properties of matter are determined by the properties of molecules and atoms". From there he builds all the principles taught in general chemistry. He also define chemistry as: "the science that seeks to understand the behavior of matter by studying the behavior of atoms and molecules".
Each chapter is organized in a similar fashion and a great deal of emphasis is placed on making the illustrations demonstrate a principle - a process - rather than an isolated picture. Tro also has interesting articles of chemistry in various fields in different chapters and he often introduces ideas with practical issues that will likely matter to the student.
For review, at the end of each chapter he goes over the key concepts taught, the key equations and relationships discussed, and the key skills that the student is expected to have learned. He provides exercises to test one's mastery of the material that the student can answer for himself. The problems are organized by chapter topic. Those listed with blue numbers have answers provided in the back of the book. There are also cumulative problems that build on skills learned previously, challenge problems, and conceptual problems that go a bit further than the minimum requirements of chapter mastery.
Besides Appendix III with selected answers, there are others with key equations, useful data, and a glossary. And there is a good index, as well.
I think it is a handsome and very useful text for teaching and learning general chemistry. A general reader could benefit from studying from it because it is clear and engaging enough that one can work through what is being taught.
Book Description
This manual is designed to complement McQuarrie and Simon's new Physical Chemistry: A Molecular Approach by providing a detailed solution for every one of the more than 1400 problems found in the text.

Keeping Pace with Physical Chemistry.......2007-03-08
As a medical microbiologist/sterilization microbiologist, it has proven necessary over the many years to stay current in many of the contributing sciences to my speciality. I do so on a semester basis. It was time again to go back to my Physical Chemistry and I was looking for a current title with a different approach to the course. While using the Mcguire & Simon (an excellent text for any class and especially for selft studying), it is necessary (as ever before with P. Chem) to do the problems. The normal difficulty is doing enough to set the concepts in the brain. Add to that finding the correct answer and you have a daunting problem in and of itself. The Problems & Solutions guide turns that problem into a very neat and usable solution. There are several minor errors, but they present themselves so as not to confuse the student. The presentation is a bit spartan, but still very usable and direct. If you are going to purchase McGuire & Simon (and I can't see why anybody wouldn't that's serious about the subject), you really should purchase the Problems & Solutions guide in order to get the most out of the subject. Finally, someone wrote a problem & solutions guide to a chemistry text that is worth owning and is very reasonably priced.
You want the answers? Here they are!.......2007-02-14
This book is big, it's got a LOT of answers and it explains all the answers in detail, not just the minimum answers.
Saved my butt.......2004-12-17
I'm not much a a pchem student.. passed by the skin of my teeth.. I frankly don't know how I would possibly have solved any of the homework problems without this book to get me start and help me through the tough spots. This book was a lifesaver.
However, I encourage you to use it as an aid... I fell into the trap on the first test of relying to heavily on it and paid for it test time...
If you use the text, you'd better buy this unless your a genius...
There are a few errors here and there accounting for the 4. These can cause you lots of wasted head scratching when your trying to figure out why you can reproduce the answers. Thankfully these are few and far between.
Solutions Manual for Simon and McQuarrie.......2004-02-09
Heather Cox is the wo-man. All of the problems are worked out in the goriest of detail, leaving nothing to the imagination. Not only are the problems fully worked, but additional justification and reasoning is given, making this a great supplement to the main text, especially in courses where the professor assigns a significant amount of book problems.

Concepts of Modern Catalysis and Kinetics
ASIN: 352729662X |
Book Description
An integrated approach to the molecular theory of reaction mechanism in heterogeneous catalysis, largely based on the knowledge among the growing theoretical catalysis community over the past half century, and covering all major catalytic systems. The authors develop a general conceptual framework, including in-depth comparisons with enzyme catalysis, biomineralisation, organometallic and coordination chemistry. A chapter dedicated to molecular electrocatalysis addresses the molecular description of reactions at the liquid-solid interphase, while studies range from a quantum-chemical treatment of individual molecular states to dynamic Monte-Carlo simulations, including the full flexibility of the many-particle systems. Complexity in catalysis is explained in chapters on self-organization and self-assembly of catalysts, and other sections are devoted to evolutionary, combinatorial techniques as well as artificial chemistry.
