Book Description

This text's clear explanations and descriptions of the mechanisms of chemical reactions teach students how to apply principles in order to predict the outcomes of reactions. Early coverage of acid/base chemistry allows students to quickly grasp the concept that the structures of organic compounds determine their chemical reactivity. This new edition offers a strengthened focus on biological applications that renders the text more accessible to the majority of organic chemistry students and more consistent with the interdisciplinary nature of scientific research.

This text's unique pedagogy encourages meaningful analysis and evaluation. "A Look Ahead" sections at the beginning of each chapter introduce the chapter's main topics and objectives. "One Small Step" features apply familiar concepts to new reagents and reactions, encouraging students to analyze material rather than memorize the outcome to each new reaction. "Visualizing the Reaction" features help students recognize important reactions by demonstrating the complete mechanisms for each type of reaction. The "Problem-Solving Skills" sections offer students a systematic approach to solving organic chemistry problems, allowing them to reason their way to a solution. End-of-chapter materials include a summary that offers a concise review of major concepts or end-of-chapter tables that summarize the reactions that appear in the chapter.

5 out of 5 stars Good Book.......2007-09-18

This is the book I learned organic I from. When i tried to take organic II at a different school they used a different book, it was more confusing and poor at explaining things (solomons and fryhle). As a student, i think this is a great choice for a book, it was easy to use and the review problems were helpful (though you need the student answer guide).

4 out of 5 stars Great for reference and review.......2005-03-30

I own several organic chemistry books: Organic Chemistry By Solomons and Fryle, this book (an older edition), Schaum's Organic chemistry, and Organic Chemistry as a second language. I think that this book lacks in the substitution and elimination reaction chapters. My teacher explained that wonderfully and if you get a good book that explains that well such as organic chemistry as a second language or have a good teacher then Ege's book will make more sense in the syntheses chapter. This book does a great job explaining mechanisms and expects you to know how to write them out unlike Solomons and Fryle who care more about products than how you got them. The summaries and concepts maps are great. The other problem I found with this book is that some of the problems are very advanced (as in graduate level) and she expects you to know things that are not covered in the book until later such as the names of certain organic molecules which are pertinent in solving the problem. This author does a great job explaining isomers, quantum mechanics, and includes topics from every branch of organic chemistry. The author explains thoroughly there is a lot to learn from each chapter but you will be well prepared for later classes.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2001-04-09

Simply the best organic chemistry textbook I've seen. I own three organic chemistry texts, and this one is the most helpful, hands-down. Excellent summaries, clear and concise text, very illustrative examples. Comes with a Student Solutions Manual that contains answers to _every problem_ in the text. Fantastic. If you're having trouble learning Organic Chemistry, get this book.

5 out of 5 stars I like this author better than others.......2001-01-09

This author seems to put complex concepts in terms you can easily understand. I am currently studying out of the McMurry organic chemistry book and find it much more vague.

5 out of 5 stars In-depth and detailed.......1999-12-09

Excellent organic chemistry textbook. Many mechanisms and coherent explanations of reactions. Problems throughout the book require a very thorough understanding of the material. Study guide very detailed and helpful.

5 out of 5 stars Two thumbs up!.......2000-04-30

Dr. Ege taught me organic chemistry when I took organic chemistry in my undergraduate. She is one of not many chemists I have seen thus far that can present her expertise in such a friendly and simple manner. I used her text as a textbook for class and this book gave me valuable knowledge of Chemistry. This new edition has been recently updated and Dr. Ege still maintains her unique talent in making difficult subject easy. For those who are afraid of taking this burdensome class. Try reading this text and do the problem sets given at the end of each chapter. I am sure that you will love organic chemistry like thousands of Dr. Ege's students. This book is well organized, clear, comprehensive and ideal for future reference. It may seem too expensive, but you pay a little more for a much better one...

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Study Guide! I loved the "Concept Maps"........2004-09-08

Any Organic Chem student using the Organic Chemistry: Sructure and Reactivity text will benefit from this supplemental text. The study guide contains solutions to problems in the main text as well as excellent concept maps and additional practice problems. Material is well organized and easy to work through. The study guide provides plenty of practice for building competency in OChem. Speaking from the perspective of a pre-med student, this book helped me focus on the areas of OChem that I needed to work on. Overall, I highly recommend it for all students already using the main Structure and Reactivity text.

    Book Description

This book for advanced undergraduates covers areas of mechanistic and physical organic chemistry in a non-mathematical way. The topics included are essential in any modern chemistry degree, yet are not included in standard organic chemistry textbooks for undergraduates. The book starts with a consideration of molecular vibrations and intermolecular interactions, and introduces the use of potential energy profiles and reaction maps to describe organic chemical transformations. The relationship between kinetics and organic reaction mechanisms is then explored with special emphasis on the interpretation of activation parameters. The relationship between molecular structure and chemical reactivity, i.e. correlation analysis, is then covered, followed by a chapter on catalysis of organic chemical reactions in solution by small molecules. The treatment of catalysis explores how the molecular structure of compounds determines their reactivity either as substrates or as catalysts. The final chapter is devoted to isotope effects in mechanistic organic chemistry, concentrating on deuterium kinetic isotope effects.

            Book Description

The one-step organic synthesis with metals discovered by Barbier almost 100 years ago was widely applied with magnesium as the main metal until the end of the 1960s. In modern Barbier reactions, the magnesium has been successfully replaced with lithium and zinc. More recently tin and aluminium have also been introduced together with other metals such as lead, manganese, cerium etc. Unexpected new developments, e.g., the use of aqueous solvents, are of great interest to synthetic chemists, especially those working with industrial processes increasingly controlled by ever-tighter environmental regulations. This book offers a completely new perspective on a simple synthetic method that has only been reviewed onece before by the same author some 15 years ago. Chapter one traces the development of reactions of metals with organohalides leading on to the Barbier reaction and finally to the Grignard reagent formation reaction. The second chapter deals with synthetic applications of the Barbier reaction. The following chapter discusses Barbier-type reactions with other metals. The fourth chapter is concerned with the detailed mechanism of the reaction. Finally, in the last chapter, technical details are presented which will enable practitioners to perform these one-step reactions smoothly and effectively.

                Book Description

At the heart of this important study of contemporary geography lies a deceptively simple question: how should geographers respond to a world which is changing fast - perhaps faster than ever before? The Challenge for Geography addresses this question directly, bringing together ten prominent geographers to examine both changes in the contemporary world and transformations within the discipline of geography. Two substantial introductory chapters by Ron Johnston set the agenda for each of the book's main sections, A Changing World and A Changing Discipline. Part One features Peter Dicken on the changing global economy, Susan J. Smith on social landscapes, Graham Smith on geopolitics, Ian Simmons on human societies and environmental change, Andrew Goudie on land transformation, and Martin Parry on climate change. In Part Two, Peter Taylor, Peter Jackson and Ron Abler examine the implications of these changes in the world for the discipline of geography. This book will be welcomed by anyone concerned with the past, present and future of geography.

                      Book Description

The status of geography in school curricula varies across the globe. Geography, as a discrete subject, has, in some countries, established a strong position in both primary and secondary schools while in others it has a weaker position, often a component of integrated and cross-curricular arrangements. Globally, the trend is for geography's status to be challenged. A central theme of this book is the location of geography in school curricula with particular reference to centrality and marginality. A second theme relates to the subject status of geography. A third theme relates to the spirit and purpose of school geography and the traditions that underpin the subject and how these are changing. A fourth theme relates to the way geography is being seen by curriculum planners as contributing to the achievement of governmental aims for society in general. A fifth theme concerns the human and material resources infrastructure. Finally, what of the future?

The underpinning assumption is that experiences gained in one country will be of real interest to educators in another. The book, is part of the work of the Commission on Geographical Education of the International Geographical Union. Part 1, written in a global context, focuses on the distinctive traditions of school geography. Part 2 reviews the contemporary state of school geography on a broad continental basis with each chapter including national case studies, written by experts drawn from those countries. The final parts comprises chapters that extrapolate from the present and point to likely future developments in the subject, again with examples drawn from various countries.
