1 out of 5 stars This book is just a glossary of terms.......2007-07-12

When I ordered this review book, I was expecting an outline of important facts from each chapter. However, all the book turned out to be was a glossary of bolded terms. The right side of every page has lines to write your own notes, if you like doing that. But the description that is on Amazon is definitely off-putting. In no way will this "review book" help you alone. You'd be better off saving the $13 by using the glossary in the actual text book.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good Introduction.......2004-09-05

As an early childhood teacher, I use this book as a carry over from my university days. It covers the main issues, theories, and primary literature with relative simplicity allowing you to escape getting overwhelmed by too much techy language...but get more texts. Buying this one book will not suffice in the classroom.

1 out of 5 stars Buyer Beware.......2003-07-10

This is a study guide that is 100% worthless unless you are using it with the associated text book. Don't buy it as a stand-alone work. It doesn't even have an index.

Instead check out "Lifespan Human Development" by Gormly and Brodzinsky instead. It has a high Amazon rating and it seems well written, concise, and on topic.

I was also very happy with the vendor, College Book Service. They let me upgrade the shipping on my order so it would arrive sooner,...

5 out of 5 stars Human development A Life-Span Approach.......2003-06-18

This book is a big help in getting the basics. I really want to comment on the seller-College Book Service- they had the book here in 4 days. I was happy!

5 out of 5 stars A comprehensive study of human growth and development.......1998-12-05

This book provides an excellent, detailed look at human growth and development from birth through death, detailing theory, history, and up-to-date concepts in the field. Current issues in human development are also discussed. An excellent resource for teachers and other professionals!

I have used this textbook in my Lifespan Development classes at Ivy Tech State College, Bloomington, IN, for 2 years now. The students and I have found it very readable, logically arranged, and quite well-done overall. I would recommend it to other college instructors. My students, mainly nursing majors, have found it to be a good overview of the issues they are likely to encounter when dealing with their future patients in healthcare settings.

              Book Description

Apartheid, as legislated racial separation, brought dramatic change to the South African urban scene. Race "group areas" remodelled South African cities, while the creation of "homelands," mini-states, and the "pass laws" controlling population migration constrained the process of urbanization itself. br br In the mid 1980s, the old system was replaced by a new policy of "orderly urbanization," intended to accelerate the process of industrialization and cultural change by relaxing the constraints on urbanization imposed by state planning. The result was hardly an improvement: political instability rose, and a quarter of the black population were being housed in shanty towns. Today, negotiations between the nationalist government and the African National Congress are working to dissolve the old apartheid system. Yet the end of apartheid will only be the beginning of the creation of a new society. br br b /b b i The Apartheid City and Beyond /i /b contains a series of original contributions on apartheid as it affected housing, community life, settlement forms, and the servicing of the cities. Ranging from broad overviews of particular issues to local case studies, the contributors turn away from a past that is best forgotten, explaining how the cities of South Africa came to be as they are: the locus of people's present lives and a major constraint on urban forms. br br Looking ahead to the post-apartheid city, they show that if the cities of South Africa are to serve the people as a whole, the accelerating process of urbanization must be brought under control and harnessed to a new purpose.

                Book Description

Since its introduction over 50 years ago, the A-level has been a constant subject of debate in schools, HE and government. Sometimes hailed as a 'gold standard', there is now intense speculation about the future of the A-level in particular, but also about post-14 qualifications in general. The furore about quality and standards which accompanies each year's A-level results has become an annual fixture in the UK press calendar. With the introduction of Curriculum 2000, and an increasing number of calls for baccalaureate-style examinations, vocational qualifications and more, the need for serious debate - and change in this field is clear.
Based on primary research by two of the leading commentators on the qualifications, this book is a wide-ranging and critical view of the fundamental approaches of the education system in Britain today. With government action on this subject looking inevitable, this will be a challenging and important book for anyone interested in this debate.

                    Book Description

Current world events are shattering many accepted views of national security. New views of collective security -- incorporating reform, integration, and unification -- are replacing nationalistic policies of security. How will European security be shaped in light of these changes? Adrian Hyde-Price takes up this issue, one of the most vital contemporary questions in world politics, in this intriguing volume. In his consideration of the forces and processes at work in the fundamental transformations that have been reshaping Europe over recent years, the author focuses on the unification of Germany, Mikhail Gorbachev's reform program, the accelerating pace of West European integration through the European Community, and the uncertainties surrounding America's future role in a Europe "beyond containment." This major work outlines four types of possible alternative security structures for the year 2010 and suggests a number of principles which should govern the construction of a new security system for a Europe beyond the cold war. A collection of up-to-date information and detailed analysis, this farsighted and pioneering volume is valuable reading for scholars and practitioners in political science, international relations, and European studies. "...(this book) represents serious thinking and should be able to assist most readers in getting if not a hold then a finger on the unfolding situation. . . .it is a solid work. . . .nowhere else is all that information collected and presented systematically. . . .a solid historical presentation of especially the second half of the 1980s..." --International Affairs "The most impressive characteristic of the book is the way in which it manages to cover an immense amount of empirical and theoretical ground in a fashion which is very easy to read. The style is straight forward without being mechanical. . . .it reduces to a manageable level the great complexity of European security today in a manner which strongly recommends the book to all." --West European Politics

                          Book Description

Any examination of history soon undermines such thoughts but this is not to deny their significance. What we are experiencing is a remarkable collection of factors that require us to rethink many established practices, cherished ideals and even the enlightenment search for progress through science and rationality. Planning is of course deeply embroiled in these debates. For example,

                          * The neo-liberal hegemony of the past two decades remains entrenched against the growing importance given by society to the environment.

                          * Globalisation and the shift to what some have termed the post-industrial society increasingly mean that places are becoming commodities to be packaged and sold in the world-wide search for capital.

                          * Nationalism, devolution and the Balkanisation of former nation states continues alongside the growing importance of supra-national institutions such as the EU and the United Nations in prescribing and influencing policies on land use.

                          * Increasing demands for greater participation and accountability conflict with entrenched attitudes of technical authority within the planning profession.

These over-arching debates structure and influence the practices of planning. In a provocative and broad collection of chapters from young academics this book examines these current debates and explores possible futures for sustainability, urban regeneration, the planning profession, environmental and transport policy, social exclusion, housing and planning theory. Regardless of the topic all the chapters conclude that planning needs to be rethought for the challenges and changes going on around it.

                            Book Description

In the 1990s, numerous Latin American nations privatized their public pension systems. These reforms dramatically transformed the way these countries provide retirement income, and they provoked widespread protests from workers and pensioners alike. Retiring the State represents the first book-length study of the origins of this surprising trend.

Drawing on original field research, including interviews with key policymakers, Madrid argues that the recent reforms were driven not by social policy, but by macroeconomic concerns. Countries facing growing financial pressures chose to privatize their pension systems largely to boost their domestic savings rates and reduce public pension spending in the long run. The author explores his arguments through detailed case studies of pension reform in Argentina, Brazil, and Mexico, a survey of social security privatization efforts in East Europe and Latin America as a whole, and a quantitative analysis of pension privatization worldwide.

4 out of 5 stars Brilliant and Valuable, Missing the Presidential Trade-Offs.......2000-12-07

The public policy overviews by Brookings are always among the best, and they are even more valuable this year when several think tanks appear to have defaulted on their traditional role in offering up reviews for consideration by the transition team. Across the various issue areas, including international, social, domestic, and governance policy domains, they present thoughtful recommendations.

Unfortunately, despite their deep understanding of the dilemmas facing the next President, the book does not provide the two things I would most like to have seen: one or two page "decision-papers" that set out the choices to be made within each issue area, and the specific budget costs and timelines for those choices; and a larger over-all budget choice document in no more than 2 pages that outlines what changes might be made in both the budget construction already underway in CY 2001 that the new President can influence, and the budget to be prepared from scratch in CY 2002 that should reflect the vital trade-offs as well as the vital plus-ups that need to be made in defense, intelligence, public health, and education, to name just my top four. In defense and intelligence, my specific area of interest, I would have liked to see some specific recommendations, and their costs, for restoring the 450 ship Navy, creating the contingency and peacekeeping force as well as the humanitarian assistance and disaster relief forces, and some specifics on considerably reinforcing diplomatic, peace corps, and economic assistance operations including a Digital Marshall Plan. This is not to quarrel with findings and views of the authors, all of whom merit very serious consideration, but rather to note that the book does not go far enough, either in specific programmatic terms, or in politically useful presentation terms.

This is an excellent book, but it is also a classic example of unfettered brilliance-without the concise decision papers and the over-all budget numbers, this book will only be read by staffers, not by principals, and that is a shame, because on balance I think there is a great deal to be learned from each of the authors contributing to this work.

                            5 out of 5 stars The Agenda.......2000-05-24

Aaron and Reischauer compiled experts in several fields into this marvelous work. "Setting National Priorities" identifies and examines the key policy issues facing the American legislatures, and therefore American people, during the 2000 campaign. From Social Security and the International Trade to Campaign Finance Reform and the changing face of government, this book details the problems facing every politician. In short, its a must read for all policy wonks!

4 out of 5 stars Dated, but Still Valuable.......2002-12-30

The 62 first-person essays here are aimed at both those considering getting an MLS (like me), and those in the field looking for a change. It provides a very valuable service by doing exactly what the title says, however one can't help but feel it's time for a new edition that reflects the massive growth of the Internet since the book's publication in 1997. Many of the essays are by people who got jobs linked to the first wave of computer use in the libraries, and in that sense, it feels very dated. Indeed, if you look at the contributors' biographies, the majority seem to have gotten their degrees around the time I was born (early '70s). I'd like to see more from younger librarians, and more about the technology end of things. The book is well organized, so it's easy to skim and find the entries that interest you, although there did seem to be a fair amount of overlap in the area of information consulting. Still, it's a valuable book for anyone considering an MLS.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting case studies.......2000-08-07

This book includes interesting narratives from librarians in a variety of jobs outside of the traditional library. However, the book predates the explosion of technology and the Internet, so it doesn't really touch on MLS grads working in computer-related jobs. The book includes 62 personal case studies and is divided into the following sections: (1) publishers, writers, booksellers, reviewers, (2) products and services for libraries, (3) independent librarians, (4) independent librarians with companies of their own, (5) association work and work in the academic world, (6) librarians employed in the corporate world, (7) some librarians who have traveled farther afield (includes private investigator, archivist, etc).
