Entertaining read for an unentertaining subject.......2004-01-11
I read this book for a college course a few years ago, and have recently revisited it for a quick review. It is written in a manner that is not only easy to read, but also entertaining. An example of this is in Chapter 22 entitled "Hollow Spheres" where the author refers to "Hollow Spheres" as "hollow balls". This adds some humor and helped to keep my attention on the topic the entire way through. I kept thinking, "What will they say next?" Thanks, Robert A. Ruhno and Bruce W. Sands and the rest of the writers for a great effort!

The United Nations Environment Program and the World Meterological Organization set up the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in 1988 to provide an authoritative international consensus of scientific opinion on climate change. This report, prepared by IPCC Working Groups I and II, reviews the latest scientific evidence on the following key topics: radiative forcing of climate change; the latest values of global warming potential (used to compare the potential effect on future climate of different anthropogenic factors); the stabilization of greenhouse gas concentrations in the atmosphere; and an evaluation of scenarios of future greenhouse gas emissions. A good short introduction to radiative forcing.......1995-10-14
The IPCC-1994 follow up on the first two reports of the
IPCC working group one (WG1) reports on climatic change
gives a good compendium of our knowledge on anthropogenic
(and natural) radiative forcing of the atmosphere and the
climate system.
The book fills the hole that new findings in the last couple
of years have created. It will be mostly for specialists
that have to know things before the rest. If you do not
belong to this group, wait for the 1995-IPCC report due in
the beginning of 1996.
Book Description
The Aral Sea Basin, which is located in the central Asian part of the former Soviet Union, is undergoing dramatically rapid and intense environmental change. Pervasive human misuse and overuse of its water, land, and other critical natural resources have led to severe degradation of key ecological systems. This book analyses the environmental, human and economic problems that have arisen and presents recommendations for future research needs. Primary focus is on the drying of the Aral Sea, but related issues of diminished river flow, land and water pollution, and degradation, ecosystem deterioration, and adverse effects on humans are also examined.

Current climate models diverge in their assessment of global warming that will result from the anthropogenic increase in trace gases. This is because they differ in their representation of the hydrological cycle (water vapour, clouds, snow and sea ice, soil moisture) and because a direct validation in terms of sensitivity is not possible. Indirect methods and approaches are therefore necessary to verify the models efficiently. The book provides an overview on different validation approaches. The use of satellite data is particularly stressed.
