4 out of 5 stars Rankin Redux.......2002-07-17

This is exactly the same book as "Creative Lighting for Outdoor Living"; only the title has been changed. There is something vaguely suspicious about re-titling the same text and illustrations to lure the unwary into a second purchase. That said, my earlier review stands but my opinion of Lark Books has taken a fall.

"Lavishly prodiced, The New American Swimming Pool is an invaluable and practical refernce book [Pool Owner - maybe not practical]. 5 out of 5 stars A GREAT Pool Book.......2005-07-07

This is a great pool book if you're contemplating building a classy pool with beautiful landscaping.

2 out of 5 stars Nice pictures but.........2004-02-02

...there is absolutely nothing on construction. It's a coffee table book at best!

5 out of 5 stars The best book out!.......2003-09-21

Not just great photos and ideas. This book give details on all the pools, including geographical location, size, depth, color of plaster, type of coping and decking/terrace, etc. Although there are a lot of great books out with wonderful pictures, this one doesn't have all tropical pools, which is nice for those of us who don't have a jungle of palms! Very nice designs for those who live in temperate climates or with more traditional yards/homes. Best pool book yet.

    Book Description

In 1808, according to a report to Congress issued by Jefferson's treasury secretary Albert Gallatin, the most efficient way to ship goods from Pittsburgh to Philadelphia was by water: down the Monongahela River to the Ohio, then down the Mississippi to New Orleans, around the tip of Florida and up the Atlantic Coast. By this route, the two Pennsylvania towns were more than 3,000 miles apart; by land, the distance was 280. Clearly, Gallatin argued, the United States needed a road--a National Road.

This comprehensive, authoritative, and richly illustrated volume offers a sweeping overview of the project that shaped the geography and history of the United States by uniting East and West--and, ultimately, dividing North and South. With its companion volume, A Guide to the National Road, it describes the origins, evolution, and meaning of the National Road for American culture, economics, and patterns of settlement.

As the first federally funded and planned national highway in America, the National Road was intended to forge critical transportation links between established East Coast cities and an emerging frontier west of the Appalachians, in the old Northwest Territory. Begun in 1808 in Cumberland, Maryland, the Road's first segment reached Wheeling, West Virginia, in 1818. By 1850 the Road had been extended to its formal western terminus in Vandalia, the Illinois state capital. From there two routes went west toward the Mississippi River, one to East St. Louis and the other to Alton, Illinois. (Today the Road's path is followed, for the most part, by U.S. 40 and I-70.)

Paradoxically, the authors explain, the National Road was both obsolete and premature from the time it was built--obsolete because the emerging technology of the railroad would soon offer a far more efficient means of overland transportation; and premature because the technology that could make efficient use of an improved road network--the automobile--was nearly a century away.

In the end, the Road never quite reached the banks of the Mississippi, and never, in the period between 1808 and 1850, did a good road, complete and in good repair, exist between Cumberland and Vandalia. But in the antebellum period, the Road represented the central government's power to open the West, and the power of nineteenth-century Americans to define themselves as a continental people. Travelers who follow their path today--along the National Road or other U.S. highways--owe much to their pioneering efforts.

1 out of 5 stars This book is a waste of money.......2007-09-09

I purchased this book a few years ago and got "sucked into" purchasing a blueprint. The "plans" are sketches of mature yards, and the "plan view" doesn't really help as far as knowing what plants to use. What ends up happening is you spend more money on the blueprints. THEN when you get the blueprints, the plants "recommended" for your region aren't easy to obtain!

Blueprints in hand, I visited a local nursery and struck out with many of the plants recommended.

Don't waste your money, hoping that for $11 you'll get a useful landscape plan.

1 out of 5 stars CAN YOU SAY RIPOFF?.......2000-08-29

A quick glance through this book at the home and garden store promised many detailed designs. Upon close examination, however, it became clear that this book is nothing more than a glossy come-on, requiring you to sink another fifteen bucks PER DESIGN for a plant list specific to your locale. Don't waste your money on this one.

4 out of 5 stars beds and borders.......2000-02-05

The detail on structuring the garden (balance, colors, form, etc.)is excellent, especially for someone who has already tried to create a professional-looking landscape but didn't have all the info!)

    1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......1999-06-15

This book is nothing more than an attempt to get you to buy their landscape blueprints. It is actually put out by Home Planners. Not very up front about this fact on the cover though

        Book Description

This companion volume to The National Road is a traveler's guide to the nation's first federally funded highway. Combining a wealth of historical and geographical information, A Guide to the National Road takes readers on a seven-hundred-mile journey through America's heartland, from the Chesapeake Bay to the Mississippi River.

Although the National Road as legislated by Congress in 1808 officially began in Cumberland, Maryland, a crucial stretch of highway linking that town with the port of Baltimore was hastily added as construction on the Road began. A Guide to the National Road therefore begins the journey in downtown Baltimore--just a few blocks north of what is now Oriole Park at Camden Yards--and follows the Road westward as it parallels old U.S. 40 and the newer, faster--but far less interesting--Interstates 70 and 68.

With chapter-length vignettes on each of the road's seven segments, the Guide traces the road through such landmark Maryland towns as New Market, in which every building is on the National Historic Register, and Frederick, where, legend has it, Barbara Fritchie issued her famous challenge to Confederate General Stonewall Jackson. After following Boonsboro Pike--the first macadam road in the United States--the Road crosses the five-arch Wilson Bridge, built in 1819 (and recently renovated with money originally set aside for its demolition). Farther west, the Road passes Fort Necessity Battlefield in Pennsylvania, where George Washington ordered his men to bury the slain General Braddock beneath the Road itself, running wagons over the gravesite to conceal it from the Indians he feared might mutilate the body. (The grave has since been moved.)

Past motor courts and historic courthouses, abandoned gas stations and eighteenth- and nineteenth-century farms, streetcar diners and drive-in movies, miniature golf courses, restaurants, and century-old buildings that have seen a dozen uses, the National Road offers the serious traveler a rich and rewarding experience that is literally bypassed by the millions each year who drive the Interstate.

A Guide to the National Road describes a trip from east to west--the direction in which the road was built--but is carefully cross-referenced for use in either direction. Richly illustrated with more than 300 maps and photographs, this comprehensive, authoritative, and friendly guide leads us down a trail blazed by Native American hunting parties and settlers' Conestoga wagons, mounted cavalry and Model-T Fords, on a journey into our nation's past.

5 out of 5 stars Landscape design for real people!.......2007-06-21

This beautiful book is a joy to read for anyone dreaming about improving their home's landscape. I'm a big fan of the TV show and am delighted they've come out with a book that captures the projects so well. Its premise is that everyone deserves good design and you don't have to be rich to get it. There are so many great ideas packed into the book with before and after photos, lists of materials, and clear instructions on installation techniques. I've purchased many residential garden design books only to be left disappointed by pretty pictures of plants and boring text. This book takes a step back and starts with a client's problem and how good design can solve it. Dean Hill is a very talented designer and Jackie Taylor is an enthusiastic co-conspirator. Together, they've created an interesting and informative book about real projects belonging to real people.

4 out of 5 stars Not bad for what it is.......2007-03-08

This book is not designed to be all things for all people, but rather a starting point. I think it gives good sketches for ideas on what you might want to do with your landscaping. It shows you general classes of plants, how many, and where to place them to achieve similar results from what is depicted in the book. I did not find one particular sketch to be fitting of what I want but pieces of several that I used to draw my own sketch for my yard. Then with looking around the landscaping in my area and talking with the people at local nurseries, I have been able to select the appropriate plants to fit that sketch -- all for free. So if you are looking for an absolute cookbook approach to landscaping, this is not it. But if you want good ideas and some guidance, you'll find what you are looking for here. You can by the landscape plans for $55 or less. So the investment isn't so bad if you want the recipe too.

1 out of 5 stars Read this before you buy, so you know what you are getting.......2000-07-18

The landscape plans are tiny and there are no plant lists - you have to buy the plant list, deck/structure plans and useable sized landscape plans. When I realized this could easily amount to a hundred bucks I returned the book (and I NEVER return anything).

You are asked to invest this money in a landscape design based on an artist rendering of the design, generally from one angle and in one season. I can't imagine anyone purchasing a plan this way.

And wosrt of all many of these plans are not original. They are the same or very similar to plans that have appeared in landscape or house design magazines (where you also have to order the plans and plant lists).

For about the price of this book you can buy Sunset Northeastern Landscaping, Landscaping in the Northeast and Canada zones 3,4,5 and 6 or something similar for your region. With these books you get plans with plant lists and descriptions, how-to info, photos and much more.

Please look around befor you waste money on this book. There are MUCH better books out there.

        5 out of 5 stars Great Examples.......2000-06-19

Over the last decade we have landscaped 3 homes and the landscape plans here were a huge help in defining what we wanted and how exactly to lay out the plants. I have referred to this book and Easy Care Landscape Plans over and over again. I only wish they had a book filled with plans for those of us dealing with small California yards!

1 out of 5 stars Not the kind of landscape design book I expected........2000-02-05

This book has plenty of ideas for backyards, but they're all sketches, not photographs. Plus, you have to order the blueprints to find out what plants they're talking about in the book. This book was not very helpful.

4 out of 5 stars Inspiring and Dynamite Coffee Table Book.......2005-01-12

This impressive book brings together 40 different gardens designed by leading architects. It is a plethora of imaginative ideas brought to reality and just waiting to spark your own outdoor design ideas. Gardens aren't as popular these days as they once were. Perhaps the reason for this is the current trend in building houses so close together one can lean out their window and touch the neighbour's. A garden was once a delightful sanctuary from the world and its troubles, now it is little more than a small bed beside the path leading from the garage to the house, or under the front window.

The stunning gardens depicted in 40: Landscapes are based more upon the older style, where one has property enough to make a haven of their own. We begin the journey in California, and end in Massachusetts, having been introduced to marvels of ingenuity and imagination around the world on our way from point A to point B. Each landscape is different from the others, the only thing they have in common is their unique beauty, and the sense of calm they deliver.

Stamper Garden held many wonders within its borders, and I was disappointed that the designer neglected to share an overall design with us. The photos showed a tranquil and appealing garden with many different facets. A stunning view is the backdrop for some perception reversals. Slabs of granite come together in a parody of Stonehenge, while another set of photos takes us away from the mountain and plunges the viewer into the forest. There is a wall with a small arched opening made entirely of firewood. It's stunning in its simplicity, and fires the imagination.

I have a strong desire to go and stay at the Hotel Kohjimachi Kaikan, now. This hotel in Chiyoda, Tokyo, features stunning gardening delights, from a traditional koi pond to a gorgeous waterfall. This garden was designed to have numerous small internal gardens within its borders. Bamboo fencing, rock ledges and stone pathways break up the vast amount of greenery, and numerous ponds and fountains offer up tranquility in abundance. It is one of the most beautiful gardens I have ever laid eyes on - in any format. I would like to see it in reality now, and experience the "zen" in person.

UBC's (University of British Columbia, Canada) was in need of having it's Nitobe Garden renovated. It had been laid out in 1960 and the original concepts and design had been lost. This was a major undertaking, but it was completed with mastery. The pond is the main focal point, and a meandering path that follows its borders. Its tranquil depths are spanned by four bridges, and there is a small island that can be reached. It is a simplistic design, yet captivating and contains possibility for an admirer to attain great serenity while walking through out this tiny realm of the orient on Canada's west coast.

Numerous ideas may be found in 40: Landscapes, for your own small backyard garden, or for a larger project should you have the property to experiment upon. This is a delightful diversion and a dynamite coffee table book. I'd have to highly recommend this one, as well!
