Even when this book was first published it was inadequate for use as a text in undergrad molecular spectroscopy courses.

What's wrong with it? It provides the barest, thinnest introduction to the subject that you'll ever read. The treatment of the mathematical aspect is superficial to say the least. In short, it's just not rigorous enough.

For those of you considering a proper text look at:

1. Modern Spectroscopy by J. Michael Hollas

2. Symmetry and Spectroscopy by Harris & Bertolucci

3. Spectra of Atoms and Molecules by Peter F. Bernath

4. Molecular Spectroscopy (Oxford Chemistry Primers) by John M. Brown

5. Molecules and Radiation: An Introduction to Modern Molecular Spectroscopy by Jeffrey I. Steinfeld

For those who DO want a skimpy book try:

1. Basic Atomic and Molecular Spectroscopy (Basic Concepts In Chemistry) by J. Michael Hollas

2. Foundations of Spectroscopy (Oxford Chemistry Primers) by Duckett & Gilbert

This book is well writen, well defined, compleate and aside from being mahematicall well defined gives all the qualitative understanding you need to get by. I suggest you use this to replace your confusing and overly dense spectroscopy chapters in any intro to P.chem book.

Being an undergraduate student of the Kazakh National State University, Almaty, Kazakstan, CIS, Faculty if Physics, I dealed with spectroscopy. This book was easy to read, perfectly composed and contained all information I need for my research. It stressed upon physical sence of the phenomena and had good illustration material.

I must say that I've read it in Russian. The year of edition was 1985 approximately.

I strongly recommend this book to people with or without physical background, making researshes on any kind of spectroscopy(IR,UV,NMR).

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Reference on Spectroscopy.......2000-09-09

The undergraduate physical chemistry lab course required us to perform at least 2 experiments on spectroscopy. Experiments could be drawn from infrared spectra, electronic-vibrational absorption spectrum, Raman spectroscopy, and magnetic susceptibility of transition metal ions in solution.

While introductory physical (quantum) chemistry course only gives students an overview of spectroscopy and its applications, this book provides excellent information about different types of spectroscopy and their usages in laboratory. Many will find it very useful to consult this book before proceeding on spectroscopy experiments. It will also serve as a reference tool for practicing chemists and professionals who need a refresher in the subject.

It covers basic spectroscopy techniques, vibrational spectroscopy, rotational spectroscopy, infrared, Raman on diatomic molecules and polyatomic molecules. One great tool.

            Book Description

This text is designed as a practical introduction to quantum chemistry. Quantum chemistry is applied to explain and predict molecular spectroscopy and the electronic structure of atoms and molecules. In addition, the text provides a practical guide to using molecular mechanics and electronic structure computations including ab initio, semi-empirical, and density functional methods. The use of electronic structure computations is a timely subject as its applications in both theoretical and experimental chemical research is increasingly prevalent.
This text is written in a format that fosters mastery of the subject both in competency in the mathematics and in obtaining a conceptual understanding of quantum mechanics. The chemistry student's interest is maintained early on in the text where quantum mechanics is developed by applying it to molecular spectroscopy and through conceptual questions labeled as Chemical Connection. Questions throughout the text labeled as Chemical Connection and Points of Further Understanding focus on conceptual understanding and consequences of quantum mechanics. If an Instructor chooses, these questions can be used as a basis for classroom discussion encouraging cooperative learning techniques.
This text provides a solid foundation from which students can readily build further knowledge of quantum chemistry in more advanced courses. In cases where this is a final course in quantum chemistry, this text provides the student not only with an appreciation of the importance of quantum mechanics to chemistry, but also with a practical guide to using electronic structure computations.

1 out of 5 stars Terrible lab manual.......2007-02-24

I inherited this lab manual when I started teaching physical geology this semester, and I told my students to return it to the bookstore. It contains factual errors (such as referring to hornblende and other non-metallic minerals as metallic, which they are not - metallic minerals are opaque in thin section), and the pedagogy is highly questionable. In the rock and mineral sections, it relies too heavily on photographs. Students already have a tendency to want to simply match minerals and rocks to pictures, which doesn't work, and this book encourages this. The book is too much talk and not enough action. Students in a lab should be guided to work with objects, not to simply answer questions out of a book. There is too much explanation provided, with little left for students to figure out on their own. Labs should be presented to students as mysteries to be solved, and this book takes all the mystery out of everything.

                  1 out of 5 stars Geology Prof........2007-01-06

This "lab manual" is VERY thick and far too wordy. Really, it's more of a spiral-bound textbook than a lab manual. Additionally, the lab questions appear in list format at the end of each section, so there is virtually no standardized answersheet for students to record their work on. That not only makes it harder on the students, but efficient grading is nearly impossible unless the instructor makes his/her own taylor-made answer sheets for the students to use on EACH lab. As if that weren't bad enough, the lab manual's companion web site is horrid. I am amazed that the AGI and the NAGT produced this lab manual.

I bought this book for school, since my school was out of the book and this one was cheaper. It does the job, it is probably less expensive than your school, and you can't get a used one because usually some of the pages you need are missing.

5 out of 5 stars Laboratory Manual in Physical Geology.......2006-08-08

Publishers are driving me nuts with their inflated prices...they made a small number of edition #6 which was considered their best one and then let their supplies run out so that schools would have to buy their "new" one. After flipping through it, it is clear that it is nearly identical to the sixth edition lab manual. Such a waste.

                    Book Description

From Aa toZweikanter, this popular dictionary has now been revised and updated. This edition includes over 1,000 new terms plus:

                    -accurate definitions without technical jargon

                    -many word origins

                    -hyphenation and pronunciation guide

                    -commonly used abbreviations

-a geologic time and life chart

The definitions in this book are drawn largely from the autoritative 36,000-term Glossary Of Geology, to which nearly 150 specialists from all fields of the geosciences contributed. Both the Glossary and this Dictionary were prepared as a service of the American Geological Institute, a federation of geoscience societies united to provide information to the science community and the public.

5 out of 5 stars Something every rockhound needs!!.......2007-03-08

This is a great book... it has not let me down yet! It is an absolute essential for anyone interested in rocks, minerals, gemstones, and the earth in general.

5 out of 5 stars Great reference to have on your desk!.......2006-03-18

                    To all working geologists!
You should all have this on your desks! I used it to study for the ASBOG exam and have since found it invaluable in my working life. It has all the odd and obscure geological terms that we all have heard in college but have since forgotten.
                    Its a great reference!

5 out of 5 stars An indispensible resource.......2004-12-03

There is no way I could have survived 4 years of college level geology without this text. This is a must have book for the student of the geological sciences.

4 out of 5 stars A handy review in reading treatises.......2003-09-13

As scientific dictionaries go, this one is fairly complete. Good coverage is afforded esoteric terms. Somehow, I have the feeling, though, that the book is more attuned to rockhounds than it is to professional geologists. The book lacks diagrams or photos. In a good many instances, this would afford a newcomer a bettle handle on the term being defined.

For all of this, it is a handy guide when looking at particular rocks or strata, but its real virtue lies in being at the student's hand when attempting to unwind a treatise confounded by excessive verbiage.

4 out of 5 stars good basic dictionary.......2003-06-17

This is a good basic dictionary. It's not meant to be comprehensive, but covers the basics quite well. It was a required text in my undergraduate studies, and it serves nicely at that level.

                          Book Description

Geologic maps are our most important and complete compilation of information about the solid Earth we live on, and we cannot understand the Earth without them. Meeting Challenges with Geologic Maps presents 16 examples that show how geologic maps are helping to delineate fragile habitat and ecosystems, protect against natural hazards (earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, landslides and sinkholes), and find needed resources (groundwater, metals, coal, and sand and gravel).
