Book Description

Factor analysis is a mathematical tool for examining a wide range of data sets, with applications especially important to the design of experiments (DOE), spectroscopy, chromatography, and chemometrics. Whereas the first two editions concentrated on standardizing the fundamentals of this emerging discipline, the Third Edition of Factor Analysis in Chemistry, the "bible" of factor analysis, proves a comprehensive handbook at a level that is consistent with the research and design of experiments today.

With the exception of updates, the introductory chapters remain unchanged. Chapter 6 has been edited to focus on evolutionary methods, including window factor analysis, transmutation, and DECRA. Selections on partial least squares and multimode analysis have been expanded and consolidated into two new chapters, 7 and 8. Some of the latest advances in a wide variety of fields, such as chromatography, NMR, biomedicine, environmental science, food, and fuels, are described in the applications chapters (chapters 9 through 12).

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Pretty good survey.......2007-03-14

The author does a good job with a tough topic. This is a fairly narrow niche of statistics that combines rigorous math and domain knowledge based heuristics. It is of interest to a small audience with very diverse background. Pure statisticians will probably be dissatisfied with the lack of rigor. People looking for a recipe to follow will probably find the book too theoretical.

Given this challenge, the author acquits himself quite well. Very early on, he simply and clearly states the point of factor analysis. We get a good overview of the basic steps, and the options for tackling each one. The general statistical treatment is easy to skip for people who dont' need it, and seems fairly well done for people who do need it. We get some good examples and a detailed bibliography.

5 out of 5 stars Factor Analysis in Chemistry.......2006-01-21

This is an excellent reference to the fascinating world of multivariate analysis.

    Book Description

An essential component of all programs relating to waste management is the ability to perform measurements on-site for safe handling and disposal of hazardous wastes. This book focuses on recent developments in field testing methods and quality assurance, which are important to both RCRA and CLERLA hazardous waste management programs. The book highlights sampling strategies, field measurements, and toxicity screening of complex waste matrices. It also describes requirements for quality assurance intended to be used in hazardous wastes remediation, management, and control. Environmental scientists, analytical chemists, laboratory personnel, and other health professionals involved in the sampling, monitoring, and analysis of hazardous waste should consider this book an essential reference resource.

      Book Description

The field of endocrine disruption or endocrine active compounds (EACs), which is just emerging and still controversial, is comprehensively covered by leading experts in Volume 3, Subvolumes L (Part I) and M (the present volume, Part II). The major classes of endocrine active chemicals are discussed, as well as methods for their detection and their association with health disturbances in humans and wildlife. The etiology of several of the human diseases associated with endocrine disruptors, e.g. breast and prostate cancer, decreased fertility and malformations, is still poorly understood, and the current state of knowledge is presented. Since hormonally active agents appear to have the potential of both adverse and beneficial effects, the evidence of health benefits associated with endocrine active compounds in humans is also presented. Basic chapters on the mode of action of EACs and on the etiology of the associated diseases facilitate the understanding of this complex subject for non-medical readers.

          Book Description

Clinical Applications of TGF-ß Chairman: M.B. Sporn 1991 TGF-ß, originally identified as a transforming growth factor, is now known to exist as a family of factors with similar properties. These factors promote cell proliferation in some tissue types or conditions and induce cell differentiation in others. This book contains the latest information on the molecular biology of this family and the cognate receptors. TGF-ß regulates the expression of components of the extracellular matrix, and thus cell adhesion and migration—processes that are particularly important during development and tumorigenesis. TGF-ß has an effect on many cell types, which means that it, or its antagonists, may have clinical applications in diseases of many different tissues. It is already showing promise as a therapeutic agent in bone and wound healing. Increased expression of TGF-ß is associated with the fibrosis that occurs in chronic liver disease (TGF-ß1) and in pulmonary fibrosis of the lung (TGF-ß1 and 2). Treatment with an anti-TGF-ß1 antiserum attenuated the histological manifestations of disease in an experimental model of glomerulonephritis. In the haemopoietic system, TGF-ß arrests the growth of the most primitive stem cells and could therefore be used as a bone marrow protrctive agent during chemotherapy. In contrast, TGF-ß2 is produced by glioblastomas and may contribute to the malignancy of these tumours by impairing tumour surveillance—another case in which treatment with an antagonist may be useful. The complex effects of TGF-ß in different tissues make it a very exciting agent, but one which must be used with care. This book evaluates the behaviour of the TGF-ß family in many contexts and provides a basis for future clinical application. Book Description

There is widespread public concern about hazardous chemicals that are contained in air, soil, water and food. Policy has therefore adopted a series of laws and regulations concerning emissions into and concentration levels in different media including food. As policy makers do not only have to consider the protection of the environment but also need to ensure a well-functioning economy at the same time, these limit or target values need to be set in a balanced way. The main problem, however, is to compare the costs for achieving these targets with the benefits to society by having a smaller exposure to hazardous substances (cost-benefit analysis).

This book sets out to improve the reliability of cost-benefit analyses particularly of hazardous substances present in air, water, soil and food. It suggests that the human health risk assessment of chemicals is performed in a bottom-up analysis, i.e., following a spatially resolved multimedia modelling approach. In order to support cost-benefit analyses, the approach is accompanied by monetary valuation of human health impacts, yielding so-called external costs. Results for selected priority metals show that these external costs are small compared to those by the classical air pollutants and involve rather long time horizons touching on the aspect of intergenerational equity within sustainable development. When including further hazardous substances, the total external costs attributable to contaminants are expected to be more substantial.

                    Book Description

A comprehensive, one-volume treatment of human reliability analysis--incorporating an introduction to probabilistic risk assessment for nuclear power generating stations--and the first work to treat the subject according to the framework established for general systems theory. Draws upon reliability analysis, psychology, human factors engineering, and statistics, integrating elements of these fields within a systems framework. Provides the uninitiated reader with a history of human reliability analysis, and includes actual examples of the application of the systems approach.

                        Book Description

The environmental impact of traditional waste management practice has become a central concern in industrialized countries. The past decades have seen a dramatic development in the technology for reducing air pollution caused by incineration as stipulated by clean air policies in industrialized countries. Toxic and/or valuable and rare elements are still dispersed into the environment under current practice for the disposal of treated or untreated waste materials. This book results from the discussion among scientists, engineers and authorities; and hopes to contribute towards the implementation of future sustainable waste management practices.
