Book Description
This graduate-level book presents a self-contained exposition of fundamental topics in modern equilibrium and nonequilibrium statistical thermodynamics. The text follows a balanced approach between the macroscopic (thermodynamic) and microscopic (statistical) points of view. One notable feature is the large number of problems. Simple applications are given in 71 exercises, while more elaborate challenges are contained in 47 problems, some of which are useful for student projects.

A worth-while advanced book........2006-10-12
This is an advanced book as stated at the end of the backcover. I think the reader should have a good background and read other stat mech books concurrently to achieve the materials in this one. Of course, this is not quite self-contained, since stat mech is a very vast and detailed subject, but it has some pros. Most of theorems therein are very rigorous so that one can check with other books and learn things in more general sense. Most of the topics are very well-explained and nicely illustrative, e.g. Fig.2.4 for the time-reversal invariance concerning the reversibility or irreversibility of the system. Furthermore, it explains the concept of the pair correlation function very well from p.128-135, whereas I didn't get very much from Plischke on this topic even though in that book there is an interesting topic not contained in this one, say perturbation treatment of the pair correlation, and it treats some topics such as dilute Bose gas and Superconductivity very well. I use Le Bellac to prepare lecture notes on graduate stat mech together with some other books like Kubo, Greiner,Plischke, etc. Though pretty old, Kubo is a great book that one can learn from the problems and solutions. Pathria treats almost all interesting areas but rarely goes into details , just quotes the journals. To be effective, use LeBellac togetrher with other textbook you can get along with, you'll find this book fantastic.
Disappointed.......2006-03-07
I do not recommend this book at all. It covers a lot of materials but only very briefly. The book simply lists basic concepts and DOES NOT develop them from a set of well defined principles. So, if you don't know the materials, this is NOT a book to learn them from. On the other hand, if you already know the materials, then, you'll see that their presentation lacks clarity. In short, this is a book written without a definite view point, and hence a well conceived structure.

Non-Equilibrium Thermodynamics
ASIN: 3540411569 |
Book Description
This is the first comprehensive monograph on a new thermodynamic theory that goes beyond the classical theory of irreversible processes. In contrast to the classical approach, the local equilibrium hypothesis is abandoned, and the basic variables are complemented by non-equilibrium quantities. The claims made for extended thermodynamics are confirmed by the kinetic theory of gases and statistical mechanics. The book covers a wide spectrum of applications, and also contains a wide discussion of the foundations and the scope of the most current theories of non-equilibrium thermodynamics. The present edition reflects new developments in the theory of applications, adds new problems and provides a more detailed comparison with other fields of active research. It contains 130 proposed problems, whose detailed solutions, as well as wide bibliography on extended irreversible thermodynamics and related topices, may be unloaded from the www.uab.es/dep-fisica/eit website.
Book Description
Classic monograph treats the irreversible processes and phenomena of thermodynamics: non-equilibrium thermodynamics. Covers statistical foundations and applications of the field with special chapters on fluctuation theory, theory of stochastic processes, kinetic theory of gases, derivation of the Onsager reciprocal relations, more. 4 black-and-white illustrations.

Solid, comprehensive.......1999-12-10
Systematic and comprehensive introduction to linear non-equilibrium thermodynamics. After an extensive description of the fundamentals, a variety of examples is given. As the authors indicate in their preface, the book only deals with linear NET, which means that the more exciting modern examples of non-linear NET are not covered. This does not mean, however, that this book would be obsolete; a lot of physics happens to be linear, and the classics of linear NET (Wiener-Khinchine, Onsager) are certainly worth studying. I would even say, that linear NET should first be appreciated before venturing in the more modern aspect of non-linear NET.
A classic reference text.......1999-04-22
Not meant as a modern textbook, but highly useful for anyone who's already somewhat familiar with N.E.T. This book has a certain historical value, and it is rather obligatory for people who work with N.E.T. and/or are highly interested in it. Mathematically, it is quite rigorous. Knowledge of fluid dynamics, tensor calculus and other rather advanced mathematical concepts is definitely helpful, but not outright necessary.
You will find the title of this book in many 'further reading' lists. That alone is proof enough that this is a book worth having.

SIX IDEAS THAT SHAPED PHYSICS is the 21st century's alternative to traditional, encyclopedic textbooks. Thomas Moore designed SIX IDEAS to teach students: --to apply basic physical principles to realistic situations --to solve realistic problems --to resolve contradictions between their preconceptions and the laws of physics --to organize the ideas of physics into an integrated hierarchy

A Fantastic University Series.......2007-09-14
I took New York State Regents physics in 11th grade back in high school. I've always had a skill for math, but after taking Regents physics all I thought was, "Meh, that was fun." When I got to college I decided to give physics another go, and since I had some advanced math experience, I chose a course called University Physics (which is calculus based, over the strictly algebra based "College Physics"). Moore's Six Ideas were the required texts -- the first three units (C, N, and R) covered in the first semester, and units E, Q, and T in the second semester.
Moore's books literally changed my life. After taking University Physics, I fell in love with the subject again, and am now a junior undergraduate majoring in both math and physics. My only regret is that I sold Moore's texts back after completing the course, as I needed the money. I wish I still had them for references, and chances are I will end up buying the set again for just that.

A classic text on non-equilibrium thermodynamics.......1999-04-22
Obviously, this book isn't very recent, and a lot has happened in the field since Haase wrote it. Besides that, this book only covers the phenomenological side of non-equilibrium thermodynamics, and does not include the statistical foundations. Consequentially, people who are new to non-equilibrium thermodynamics might do well to use a more recent and modern book to learn from.
On the other hand, few (if any) books are as readable and concise as this one is, and Haase covers an enourmous range of applications of non-equilibrium thermodynamics. Therefore, anybody interested in the thermodynamics of a specific non-equilibrium system is quite likely to find this book useful. Besides the applications, Haase also develops the phenomenological side of the theory in a well thought-out, accessible and instructive manner. Hence the book still has its uses, and it is by all means a classic text in the field. Add to that the very attractive price of the Dover reprint, and you've got a winner.

Book Description
Alternative Mathematical Theory of Non-equilibrium Phenomena presents an entirely new theoretical approach to complex non-equilibrium phenomena, especially Gibbs/Falk thermodynamics and fluid mechanics. This innovative new theory allows for inclusion of all state variables and introduces a new vector-dissipation velocity-which leads to useful restatements of momentum, the Second Law, and tensors for the laws of motion, friction, and heat conduction. This application-oriented text is relatively self-contained and is an excellent guide-book for engineers with a strong interest in fundamentals, or for professionals using applied mathematics and physics in engineering applications.
This book emphasizes macroscopic phenomena, focusing specifically on gaseous states, though relations to liquid and crystalline states are also considered. The author presents a new Alternative Continuum Theory of Compressible Fluids (AT) which providesa qualitative description of the subject in predominantly physical terms, minimizing the mathematical premises. The methodology discussed has applications in a wide range of fields outside of physics in areas including General System Theory, TheoreticalEconomics, and Biophysics and Medicine.
Key Features
* Presents the first theory capable of handling non-equilibria phenomena
* Offers a unified theory of all branches of macroscopic physics
* Considers a consistent and uniform view of reality, supported by modern mathematics, leading to results different than those produced by classical theories
* Results in a change of paradigms in physics, engineering, and natural philosophy

Book Description
This book is a beginners introduction to chemical thermodynamics for engineers.
In the textbook efforts have been made to visualize as clearly as possible the main concepts of thermodynamic quantities such as enthalpy and entropy, thus making them more perceivable. Furthermore, intricate formulae in thermodynamics have been discussed as functionally unified sets of formulae to understand their meaning rather than to mathematically derive them in detail.
In this textbook, the affinity of irreversible processes, defined by the second law of thermodynamics, has been treated as the main subject, rather than the equilibrium of chemical reactions. The concept of affinity is applicable in general not only to the processes of chemical reactions but also to all kinds of irreversible processes.
This textbook also includes electrochemical thermodynamics in which, instead of the classical phenomenological approach, molecular science provides an advanced understanding of the reactions of charged particles such as ions and electrons at the electrodes.
Recently, engineering thermodynamics has introduced a new thermodynamic potential called exergy, which essentially is related to the concept of the affinity of irreversible processes. This textbook discusses the relation between exergy and affinity and explains the exergy balance diagram and exergy vector diagram applicable to exergy analyses in chemical manufacturing processes.
This textbook is written in the hope that the readers understand in a broad way the fundamental concepts of energy and exergy from chemical thermodynamics in practical applications. Finishing this book, the readers may easily step forward further into an advanced text of their specified line.
- Visualizes the main concepts of thermodynamics to show the meaning of the quantities and formulae.
- Focuses mainly on the affinity of irreversible processes and the related concept of exergy.
- Provides an advanced understanding of electrochemical thermodynamics.

Book Description
This book summarizes the salient features of both equilibrium and steady-state thermodynamic theory under a uniform postulatory viewpoint. The emphasis is upon the formal aspects and logical structure of thermodynamic theory, allowing it to emerge as a coherent whole, unfettered by much of those details which - albeit indispensable in practical applications - tend to obscure this coherent structure. Largely because of this, statistical mechanics and reference to molecular structure are, barring an occasional allusion, avoided. The treatment is, therefore, 'classical', or - using a perhaps more appropriate word - 'phenomenological'.
The volume almost exclusively deals with 'ideal' systems, given that the treatment of 'real' systems properly belongs in the realm of applied, rather than theoretical thermodynamics. For these reasons, only selected ideal systems are covered. Ideal gases are discussed extensively. The ideal solution is treated as an example of a liquid system. The amorphous ideal rubber serves as an example of a solid. The formalism developed in these sections is a model for the treatment of other, more complex systems. This short structural overview is written in the hope that a knowledge of steady-state theory will deepen readers' understanding of thermodynamics as a whole.

Customer Reviews:
Hydrogeologist.......2004-04-01
This is an excellent introduction and tutorial for the analytic element method. The book works through basic concepts in an easy readable manner without over simplification. The method is introduced and developed in a logical fashion. The discussions are involved enough for use as an ongoing reference. The included demo GFLOW however superseeded by the free demo available on the web. Every hydrogeologist should be able to understand and use the method in their toolbox, and this is a very usefull text.
An excellent introduction to Analytical Element Modelling.......2000-03-31
This book makes the difficult mathematics behind analytic element modeling understandable. It also includes a good review of the basics of groundwater flow. Highly readable. All in all, a great introduction to AE modeling.
