An insightful book. Easy to read when compared to other books of similar subject. Flows through topics smoothly.

5 out of 5 stars Well explained - a pleasure to read.......2003-10-22

I started to read this book in order to figure out how to calculate the heat released by various chemical reactions. I ended up spending a week reading the first 10 chapters (roughly half the book) and working through the majority of the exercises simply because the book was such a pleasure to read. I feel that the material is presented in a logical fashion, the physical meaning of various mathematical functions is well explained, the exercises are set at the correct pitch and lead to a deeper understanding of the theory, and sufficient references are given so that the reader knows where to go to obtain further material (thermochemical data in my case).

About a decade ago i completed a postgraduate maths/physics degree so I suppose that may give me an "edge" over some readers. However, the book begins with an introduction to calculus involving many variables which is really the only maths used in the entire book.

The book is certainly simple - you won't find much mention of statistical mechanics, for example - but I believe it provides an excellent introduction to the subject of chemical thermodynamics.

There is a companion to this book containing answers to many of the exercises.

Book Description

This widely acclaimed text, now in its fifth edition and translated into many languages, continues to present a clear, simple and concise introduction to chemical thermodynamics. An examination of equilibrium in the everyday world of mechanical objects provides the starting point for an accessible account of the factors that determine equilibrium in chemical systems. This straightforward approach leads students to a thorough understanding of the basic principles of thermodynamics, which are then applied to a wide range of physico-chemical systems. The book also discusses the problems of non-ideal solutions and the concept of activity, and provides an introduction to the molecular basis of thermodynamics.

Over five editions, the views of teachers of the subject and their students have been incorporated. The result is a little more rigour in specifying the dimensions within logarithmic expressions, the addition of more worked examples and the inclusion of a simple treatment of the molecular basis of thermodynamics. Students on courses in thermodynamics will continue to find this popular book an excellent introductory text.

5 out of 5 stars Brief understandable treatment.......2005-10-14

The subject is treated at a basic level, but provides a good overview for a reader that has little prior experience with the subject. This would be a great supplement to the typical first-year general chemistry text, and would set the stage for further work in more formal courses.

    Book Description

This book provides a comprehensive look at industrial compressors. Readers can find a great deal of information based on long industrial experience, on a clear and well-founded approach to real-gas handling, and on solutions to many practical problems. "Process Centrifugal Compressors" supplies engineering contractors and users of industrial compressors with a better insight into the "how" and "why" of different design features, thus providing a solid basis for dealing with manufacturers. It also reveals the limitations and requirements of practical applications and economics by casting light on the day-by-day design practice. By combining a mathematical approach with practical experience and many examples, it fills in the gap between academic textbooks and volumes, offering encyclopaedic descriptions of fluid flow machines.

    4 out of 5 stars A great start..........2000-03-30

This book is a great way to introduce ones self to the area of thermodynamics as applied to chemistry. The text is very informal, yet covers everything one would expect to see in an undergraduate physical chemistry or thermodynamics corse. The layout of the book is simple starting with simple physical analogs of the systems to be examined and from there developing the more complicated relationships between thermodynamic quantities. This book is excellent for those who wish to have a good basis going into further studies in the field or else wish to have a reference of the material.

              Book Description

Hardbound. Carbonate diagenesis is a subject of enormous complexity because of the basic chemical reactivity of carbonate minerals. These carbonate minerals react quickly with natural waters that either dissolve the carbonates, or precipitate new carbonates to bring the water into equilibrium with the host carbonate sediments and rocks. These rock-water interactions either create porosity by dissolution, or destroy porosity by the precipitation of carbonate cements into pore spaces. Carbonate Diagenesis and Porosity examines these important relationships in detail.

This volume is published in co-operation with OGCI, and is based on training courses organised by OGCI and taught by Dr. Moore. It is intended to give the working geologist and university graduate student a reasonable overview of carbonate diagenesis and its influence on the evolution of carbonate porosity. It starts with a discussion of the major differences between carbonates and silic

                    Description:
The Zhujiang carbonates are the hydrocarbon reservoir rock of the Liuhua 11-1 field. They comprise three porous zones of around 20 m intercalated with tight zones, parallel to bedding. Thin-section, cathodoluminescence and stable-isotope data were combined with well-log information in order to investigate the origin and spatial distribution of the abundant porosity. The vast majority of pores in the porous zones was generated or overprinted in deep burial settings by late leaching. Two tight zones, however, lack this porosity, because of meteoric cementation and increased compaction and related calcite precipitation prior to late leaching. We propose that migrating corrosive fluids were diverted along bedding-parallel flow barriers of the tight zones and leached the intervals in-between (=the porous zones) thereby emphasizing the depositional pattern.
