4 out of 5 stars Cracking the GRE Chemistry Test.......2007-01-16

If you need to prepare for the GRE Chemistry subject test, or just review some Chemistry, this book can really help.

4 out of 5 stars Good, but some flaws.......2007-01-10

This book will help you narrow down what you need to study and show you the main topics covered by the chemistry exam. However, there are several flaws in the material that while studying, could confuse you if you are not careful. If you get this book, use it to show you what you need to know, but study the topics from your own notes and books.

5 out of 5 stars Review for the Princeton's review book for GRE Chemistry.......2006-11-05

Hi there,

I just took my Subject GRE in Chemistry yesterday. Thank God, i had ordered this book. Being from MEchanical Engineering backround, and haven't had seen chemistry in past 5 years, it was a tough bet! All the material i studied were my High school notes and the Princeton's Review book.

The overlap with high school chemistry taught in India is roughly 70%, but one can't neglect the remaining 30%. The book does a good job in explaining topics like NMR spectra, Chromatograhpy, Photochemistry, ORganic Chemistry, Thermodynamics, Kintics principle, Acid-Base equilibria etc. Not a single question in the Test was out of the topics covered in the book. The practise test and indepth analysis in the end is Great. I am so much impressed by the book, that I could not wait to write praise for the book.

For chemistry GRE, there are no yahoo groups of students, and not many test papers are available. Here is some information: The FIIT-JEE website has some previous IIT-JEE and AIEEE papers with solutions archived. Further, there are 2 online tests available which will give you a fair idea of your probable score in final exam. Also try to get hold of some student in Chemistry department. They hit 'home' to the simple GRE level questions! My friends Dr Ahmad, Jamila and Dawn (all from Chemistry department at Purdue) were very helpful.

This book is a great HELP for any student working on his/her Chemsitry GRE.

The only thing i dislike about the book was its coverpage, which i tore away the first day i got it!

Good luck.

This book is an okay start. It has less mistakes in it than the older edition, but there are still some. It is definitely not enough preparation though.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Only useful prep I can find.......2005-04-06

When I was looking for books with tests to practice for Chemistry GRE, I was really disappointed at the lack of selection. Many people recommended getting the original tests to practice on, but how do I get them? The chemistry field hasn't changed very much in the past few decades, so the last book ETS put out was in 1996 and that cost 121.50 on Amazon!!! This REA Test prep book is the next best thing. I took 3 out of the 5 full-length tests and selectively tested myself on my weak areas in the last two. That plus the free GRE test I got from ETS (when I signed up for the test) was enough to prep me for the real thing. Yeah, there are a couple of questions and answers that don't match, but most of the answers are correct and are explained well and is still better than the Princeton Review Chemistry book that I also got. Another good point is that all the tests were 150 questions. So when I practiced taking the test, I paced to 150 questions for 2hr50min. The real test on my particular test date had only 136 questions. As a result, I had plenty of time left to go over questions that I missed or would like to double check. I think this book helped me pinpoint my weak areas and helped me feel comfortable with the format of the actual exam.

2 out of 5 stars Useful practice, but lots of errors.......2005-03-21

I bought this book for practising real GRE chemistry tests and wasn't disappointed by the test material it contains.
Unfortunately, several solutions are simply wrong. Additionally, the book contains lots of typographical errors that make it hard to select the correct answer choice. Chemical formulas are often written incorrectly, too.
For example, one question asked about the REAL gas law, while the solution dealt with the IDEAL gas law. Sometimes the explanations do not even match with the possible answer choices.

The book is recommendable if you intend to practice for the test without paying the money for ETS' book, but you must be aware of the fact that a discrepance between your solution and the "correct" answer choice doesn't necessarily mean you're wrong.

1 out of 5 stars Practice tests in this are easier than the real thing.......2001-04-14

This book contains no test material from any bonafide chemistry GREs. Instead it contains material that is "based on the most recent GREs." Many of the subtleties and difficulties of the real chem GRE are lost in the translation. If you compare this with the other test-prep books that actually contain old GREs, you will see the difference in many of the questions. I feel sorry for anyone who uses this as their sole test preparation booklet. It is quite misleading. Although many of the questions in this book are indeed reflective of some the topics that are covered, it is not up-to-date and some newer topics are left out. The explanations accompanying the answers at the ends of each test are nice, but it doesn't make up for the significant mismatch in level of difficulty for many questions (although some are okay). The questions on the real thing are designed to be tricky. The designs of many of the questions in this book are simpleminded and too straightforward in comparison. It might be marginally helpful to you after you have gone through some of the other available test booklets (which I strongly recommend) as a review, but do not count on this as your main review book or you will be surprised in a bad way. 1.5-1.75 stars at best.
P.S. I scored in the 82nd percentile. My best advice: GET BOOKLETS WITH BONAFIDE PAST TEST MATERIAL

4 out of 5 stars REA's 2000 Edition is up to date and very helpful.......2001-01-06

There are 5 comprehensive exams, each of which reflects todays GRE exams: 30% Organic, 30% Physical, 25% Inorganic and 15% Analytical. The 2000 version of REA's Chemistry GRE preparation booklet is an excellent review of both format and actual content of the Chemistry GRE.

2 out of 5 stars REA not up to par........1998-06-18

The problem with this book is relevance. The practice problems are not entirely reflective of the actual questions on the exam. If you wish to practice chemistry, than this book is fine; however, if you are preparing for the GRE Chemistry exam, then you will be sorely disappointed when you actually take the real exam, because the questions that you have been practicing on are sometimes not relevant. I believe that the publishers have republished corrected problems every few years, but have not recently touched base with actual problems from the real exam. Because of this, the questions seem to be outdated.

I found this book to be terribly out of date. It did not represent in any way, any of the questions that were on the Chemistry GRE, which I just took Nov 2002. Fortunately for me, I did not rely on this book alone. What I would recommend is to spend your [money] on something else, get as many practice GRE exams as possible (generally ETS will send a different exam than the one posted on the website), and study your old notes and textbooks. This book is a waste of money.

5 out of 5 stars Rudman's Chemistry GRE Series: an excellent GRE overview.......2001-01-06

Rudman's Chemistry GRE series (1996) is the most comprehensive practice Q & A guide I've seen to date. There are examination sections covering General/Physical, Inorganic, and Organic Chemistry questions similar to those expected on today's GRE... I know from experience! In addition to the literally hundreds of Q's & A's for each topic of chemistry, there is an excellent overview of the basic fundamentals AND a nice compilation of good definitions to know. This is a must for prospective Chemistry GRE takers.

1 out of 5 stars A careful freshman could compile a better review than this........2006-05-26

This book is utterly staggering in its low quality, both in terms of Homerically incompetent editing and chemical errors. Many sentences appear to have been proofread drunk, if they were proofread at all. For instance, in some places the editor clearly converted all text to one font, converting Greek letters into Roman ones. Sometimes, bizarre substitutions are made for symbols; degree signs are replaced with a Greek gamma, and deltas are sometimes replaced with thetas. Integral signs (!) sometimes appear seemingly randomly in the middle of bonds in chemical structures. Spelling errors are uncountably frequent ("Diels-Adler" reaction, anyone?)

Of course, a far worse problem consists of errors in the chemistry itself. The organic section is especially atrocious. I honestly wonder whether the author was able to do better than a 'C' in beginning organic; if so, she should be ashamed of the slipshod job displayed. Particularly egregious errors include displaying a ketone hydrate with C=O double bonds (resulting in a hexavalent carbon atom), describing "quaternary amines" with no mention of the fact that they are, of course, positively-charged ammonium ions, and depicting the acylation of an amine with a ketone, rather than with an appropriately reactive carboxylic acid derivative (e.g. an acyl chloride or anhydride). Less ridiculously inane errors on more esoteric topics, which are also myriad, are even worse, as they run a far greater risk of confusing the reader.

For its prominence as a purveyor of study aids, the Princeton Review surely should be able to do better than this travesty of a reference.

1 out of 5 stars Craking the GRE Chemistry test--2nd edition.......2005-07-23

This book is full of errors, in both the study section and the answer key. If you use this book as a study aid, you will learn to do chemistry incorrectly! The Princeton Review should proofread and correct error before publishing their books. This book is a disservice to chemistry applicants everywhere.

Save you money.

1 out of 5 stars Only good for its Table of Contents!.......2005-01-21

This book (unfortunately, one of the only GRE Chemistry books out there) is filled with errors. Some of them are typos, and (even worse) some of them are blatant, chemically illogical errors.

If you try to study for the GRE using this book, it'll send you on a wild goose chase searching for other textbooks, to validate (or discredit) what's printed here. [In a way, that can be a good thing because you'll learn a lot from reading other textbooks. But of course, it can be a huge waste of time!]

I'd use this book for its Table of Contents, to serve as a list of topics. Then go elsewhere (like to your textbooks) to get the info you need and build your own study book.

3 out of 5 stars Errors, but better than nothing........2004-07-16

Unlike tests such as the Psychology GRE, there really isn't much in the way of GRE Chemistry prep materials, excluding what is given on the GRE's site and a few obsolete or out of print books. I bought this book because it was the most modern and easy to find of books available.

I'm not sorry that I bought the book, but I would warn anybody else who is using this as their main study guide that the book does have a lot of problems, including:

1. Errors! Drawings of molecules are often incorrect (are missing bonds, have extra or missing substituents), graphs are sometimes incomplete, and a lot of diagrams have formatting errors that make the contents unclear. ALSO, take note that this book considers the compression of air into a smaller volume by a piston as negative work, when the GRE test itself considers that positive work.

2. Level of difficulty of the review chapters are not at the same level as the questions on the practice test. The questions on the practice test are trickier and often are you-know-it-or-you-don't questions that aren't covered in the text of the book.

3. Not a very good review of PChem beyond macroscopic topics such as entropy and free energy. Also had what I considered a bad review of galvanic/electrolytic cells.

I'd still recommend this book if you are looking for an inexpensive review of what topics to cover, but I'd get a couple good general Chemistry books to cover those topics in better detail.

1 out of 5 stars ERRORS ERRORS ERRORS.......2003-12-12

5 out of 5 stars Extra Practice Test Included.......2005-11-20

I just recently took the GRE (2005) and this book was the best thing that I could have found. Contrary to the other reviews, the practice test in this book is different from the one that you will be sent upon registering for the test (they now send the 2000 version for free). On top of that they include extra practice questions grouped by subject area. The only downfall is that they don't provide detailed explinations, but the questions were completely representative of the kind that were on my exam. This is the only GRE Chemistry study book that I would recommend. It's worth the money.

4 out of 5 stars Buy this Book for the Additional Practice ??'s........2001-11-05

I am taking the Chem GRE on Nov. 10, 2001. I sent away for this book hoping to get an additional full length exam from ETS, as opposed to other prep books where the material covered isn't always relevant. Unfortunately, the full length exam in this book is the same exam I was sent for free by ETS with my confirmation ticket. (Form GR9527) I was disappointed by this. However, their practice questions (106 in all, grouped by field of chem) were almost like having a second practice exam. The practice questions are at a similar level of difficulty to those on ETS' practice exam. So if you buy this book, be aware that you'll only be using about half of it. Good Luck!

4 out of 5 stars Excellent test practice.......2000-04-08

This book contains exams, with questions almost identical to those you would see on an actual exam. This is really good because after trying out some tests in this book, you'll know exactly which areas you need to work on. It includes answers, though most answers lack explanations.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars This book is the worst you could use for your GRE prep.......2004-01-07

This book is loaded with errors and typos; structures and chemical names don't correspond. A cyclohexane is called a benzene. It makes me doubt the author's credentials. If you are already confused with Chemistry, this book will only make it worse. DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK. Do not attempt to use it to prepare for your important graduate school admission exam either. You'll be better off without it.

1 out of 5 stars New edition isn't any better either..........2003-07-01

As other people have said, this book is full of typos, wrong formula names, mis-representation of structural formulas, etc. I can't underestimate the number of mistakes in this book. I bought the new edition of the book hoping that these issues had been addressed and resolved, but they have not. New typos have arisen and are in the same magnitude as the first edition.

It is a nice, general, concise review, but only if you want to double-check every fact in the book that may seem questionable. I have been using this book to review for my Qualifying exams for grad school and find that it's frustrating to use. However, it does keep you on your toes and constantly running to your text books to double check facts. I'm not sure if that is a good thing though... Come test time, it wouldn't be hard to become confused between what is right and what you saw in the book. A much better review book would be Schaum's Outlines, but they are much more detailed and not as general. This is both good and bad. I was hoping to have a general review book that I could use to supplement my undergrad texts. Obviously, this is not the book.

In general, run away from this book. Even if they come out with a third edition, I would NOT trust it.

1 out of 5 stars This edition is full of errors, mistakes, and typos.......2002-12-05

DO NOT BUY THIS EDITION!! It is full of typos, missing information in problems, mislabeled diagrams, and wrong answers! I spoke with PR and they said that, yes, indeed that is correct, but the 2002 edition has been corrected. Can you imagine what I went through while studying? I was second guessing myself left and right. I finally realized that, no, I do what I'm doing, it's the book that was wrong.

Please don't buy this 2000 edition, it is a waste of your time and money. The 2002 edition ought to be much better, and probably quite a good study guide. I, however, have not seen it and do not know for sure, but PR should be a fairly respectable test prep. company.

Happy GREs...hahaha

1 out of 5 stars A classic book sold by weight not content.......2002-10-28

Many computer books and study guides are sold on the basis that they are huge and - by implication - full of wisdom and knowledge. On closer inspection they turn out to be weak and muddled. This book falls into this category and then some. It is about the worst I've come across. Obviously rushed out to meet some kind of marketing need and consequently packed with errors. I actually came to Amazon to see what others said about it after struggling to understand the logical errors I thought I was coming across. Here's a nice but rather obvious example: p50. Q6. Which of the following acids are polyprotic? Acetic; Sulphuric; Hypochlorous; Nitric; all of the above. Answer: Carbonic! PLEASE! Chemistry is hard enough as it is. Don't make it worse.

1 out of 5 stars different way of learning (to put it mildly).......2002-08-08

This book has a different approach of studying for the GRE Chemistry exam. Instead of spoonfeeding you all the correct answers to the questions, it gives you all the wrong information so that you will be forced to think if every single item is correct or not. Since Chemistry is a very strict subject, meaning, if one atom or bond is misplaced, everything becomes invalid, reading the book becomes a tedious experience rather than an enriching experience. It is very sad that the Princeton publishers did not even bother to proofread the book, and if they ever even bother, it is most likely for grammatical purposes rather than for the Chemistry content. I have written to the Princeton publishers reagarding this issue and all they can say is they are very sorry that I am disappointed. Do you think that is enough compensation to the disappointment I have regarding this book? I have heard that they are planning to release a new edition. Honestly, with this kind of previous editions, I would discourage anybody to buy this book. I think it would be more effective if you just stick to your old textbooks.

            Book Description

This volume vividly demonstrates the importance and increasing breadth of quantitative methods in the earth sciences. With contributions from an international cast of leading practitioners, chapters cover a wide range of state-of-the-art methods and applications, including computer modeling and mapping techniques. Many chapters also contain reviews and extensive bibliographies which serve to make this an invaluable introduction to the entire field. In addition to its detailed presentations, the book includes chapters on the history of geomathematics and on R.G.V. Eigen, the "father" of mathematical geology. Written to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the International Association for Mathematical Geology, the book will be sought after by both practitioners and researchers in all branches of geology.
