Book Description
The Second World War was a classic period in the development and perfection of propeller-driven aircraft. Built during the crisis of wartime, these aircraft and the cockpits within them were marvels of technology, ingenuity and design.
Cockpit is the first book that puts the reader into the pilot's seat of these superb classic aircraft.
Cockpit is rich in historical photographs of the insides of dozens of the most celebrated, and feared, aircraft-American, British, Japanese, Russian and German. These vintage photographs and a candid "pilot's perspective" on each interior offer a unique behind-the-scenes view not only of the extraordinary aircraft, but also of the heroic men who flew them. Cockpits depicted include:
- Lockheed P-38 Lightning
- Hawker Hurricane
- Grumman Wildcat
- Mitsubishi Zero-Sen
- Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress
- Yakovlev Yak-3
- Gloster Gladiator
- Messerschmitt ME 262
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Photography.......2007-01-07
Great reference for aircraft interior from a pilots viewpoint. Excellent photography of a confined dark space.
Little Hallmark Dots.......2006-06-16
Other folks have weighed in on the content of the book, so I have no need to do that. My comment will center on the aspect of the photography that spoiled the book for me. The crew obviously had applied little colored circular stickers to the various instruments so they could be coded for the captions. That was all fine and well, but 75% of the photographs were taken with the stickers still in place. It was sloppy work. Carping, perhaps, but I expected better. The same comments apply to the volume dealing with Cold War aircraft.
Mixed Feelings.......2005-04-01
It's difficult to rate this because it depends upon what you expected this book to be. I had hoped that it would essentially be a reference for each aircraft showing all aspects of the cockpit with descriptions of the instruments and controls. This it is NOT. The photography is very nice but is strictly evocative and not really illustrative. It shows the instrument panels but in a way that hides essential details that I desire to see. Oh well, perhaps next time :-)
Good, unique book, but could've been better.......2003-01-08
I'm ... only giving it 4 stars. Nijboer and Patterson came up with a great idea, but missed a little in the execution. As a modeler, I'd like to see more details of the entire cockpit, not just the instrument panels. Also, I realize Mr Patterson is an accomplished professional photographer, but I was a little disappointed with the nature of many of the shots. I think he was trying for dramatic lighting effects, but ended up with many parts of the cockpit in dark shadow or nearly washed out by flash. ...
New standard for close up fotography !.......2002-04-09
I bought Gunner, an illustrated history of world war 2 aircraft turrets and gunpositions (by the same authors) first so I knew what to expect when I bought this book. Cockpit is probably the first book with amazing picture quality and in my eyes the standard for years to come. The pictures of the Hawker Typhoon and the Douglas A-20 Havoc are special to me because they are my favourite World War 2 airplanes. I've seen a few of these airplanes in real life but I didn't have the chance to see the cockpit up close. Because of the pictures of Dan Patterson it is now possible to walk in the footsteps of World War 2 pilots and try to imagine what it was like to fly these airplanes. I hope that the authors of these two magnificent books (Cockpit and Gunner) can find the inspiration to bring out more books like this, because these books are two of the finest in my collection.

Book Description
An essential source of practical information for architects who need to create brilliance and flair within an incredibly disciplined design scenario
This is a visual and fascinating book that focuses on the interior designs of aircraft cabins and how the many challenges faced in the layout of such a tight space can be met with flair and brilliance. It is a design context in which the tiniest detail can change a myriad of aspects.
Interior designers continuously express their creative skills through such designs and many of the techniques that are used in building interiors are repeated in aircraft cabins, and vice versa.
Jetliner Cabins is introduced by an overview of recent cabin design history and the book goes on to show, in a wealth of colour and black and white photographs, interiors from airlines around the world; great and small, historically significant and modern, lavish and minimal. It also provides examples past and present, of airline branding, from colours and identity, to the ultimate airline dining experience.
This is a book to be enjoyed by interior designers, architects and the general flying public who are interested in jetliners.
Customer Reviews:
Extremely well-illustrated and well-written reference.......2007-08-08
Besides the external paint job, most jets look alike when viewed from the outside. Even equipment with a fancy paint job is often not seen by the passenger.
It is the interior cabin which is most familiar to the customer, and conversely, it is the interior which is often most frustrating to the airlines. Besides the engines and avionics, the number of fundamental exterior combinations is not that overwhelming.
But the potential different combinations of interior cabins can easily reach the tens of thousands. In fact, part of the delay in getting the Airbus A380 into production is directly related to the interior. John Leahy, head of Airbus commercial said in an interview last year that he was embarrassed about the delays and attributed it in part to the new cabin configurations on the A380 sought by customers. If every launch customer dramatically changes the interior, and each is different than the other; that in turn creates a significant increase in engineering work that is required.
What's more, many airlines use their interiors to a competitive advantage. When it comes to the A380, Singapore Airlines, Qantas and Emirates who are the first three customers have said little publicly about all the new features in their A380 cabins because they do not want to give away secrets to the competition.
With that, Jetliner Cabins is a fascinating look at the history of interior cabins. The books 16 chapters are extremely well-researched and provide a comprehensive look at cabin interiors from the early days of flight, to current cabins such as the A380 and B787. Short of actual architectural specifications, the book provides the reader with everything they need to know.
There is a lot that goes into the cabin and the book points out all of the details. From product branding, the passenger experience, to maintenance, marketing and more. The author astutely notes that airline financial people are often myopic to the passenger experience, and will often favor a smaller seat pitch, much to the chagrin of the passenger.
If the book has a downside, it is its scant coverage (two pages) of the B787 Dreamliner. This is disappointing since the Dreamliner cabin is revolutionary. From its lighting and simulated cabin sky, Improved cabin environment, and more; its cabin is definitely ground-breaking.
Besides that, Jetliner Cabins provides a fascinating and interesting insiders look into the art and science of cabin interiors. It is a well-illustrated and well-written guide to one of the more important, yet overlooked subjects of commercial aviation. The author is clearly an expert in the field which is shown in the attention to details the book provides.
Want to see beautiful aircraft interiors? that's the book .......2006-10-09
I have mixed feelings about this book. I expected more design details such as section views, construction details, mechanisms, installation details, venneer application details and so on. I was left disappointed. However, this book is a good source of ideas on the artistic design aspect of aircraft interiors. I wished it could have been more than just a load of pictures.
The perfect companion to aviation interior design.......2006-06-04
There are surprisingly few large scale, codified books on interior design for the aviation industry. Every once in a while a book tries to bridge the gap between a coffee table, photographic essay of airplane interiors and a true guide for aviation interior design. Going even further than the previous edition in the number of chapters and photographs, Jetliner Cabins is the most up-to-date book currently available.
This updated edition contains a thorough explanation of cabin interiors, from discussions on the history of aviation and passenger experience, defining brands, new trends in design, cabin maintenance and marketing. Of special note is a subchapter on the future of commercial airliners and airplane design, including wonderful pictures of the energy efficient and sleek Boeing 787 Dreamliner, the cavernous Airbus A380-800, the multifunctional Bombardier CSeries and the scalable Embraer Jets. These planes may compete against each other on very different merits, but they thrust aviation into the next phase of flight history. It is wonderful to read and see so much about these planes.
Through well-written analysis, comparisons, diagrams, photographs, and indexes, Jetliner Cabins will delight both industrial designer and amateur enthusiast.

Commercial Aircraft Interiors.......2007-06-27
I had hoped to glean some information on how to do some high-end packaging in small spaces. No such luck. Half the book is variations on the theme of the reclining chair (first class space usage). Most of the pictures look like fancy 1970s motorhome interiors. Not nearly as useful or entertaining as the DAAB book on Yacht Interiors. I like the series, but this book is a not worth much.
Great book, good deal!.......2007-01-09
I thought the book great, the images/photographs are new and give you an overview of the current aircraft interiors in the market. In other hand the book is pictures only, no texts, just projetc names and references of the manufacturer.
As it is at a good price, I thought it a great deal.
Shows Just What Could Be Done.......2006-06-02
This design book on what can be done with the interior of an aircraft will come as quite a shock to those of us who have spent the better part of a lifetime in one airplane or another headed to yet another meeting or trade show. How many time we wake up after a nap wondering what airline we are on, and where are we going now. The inside of this plane is indistinguishable from the one a day or two ago.
This book shows what can be done when you have enough room, enough space to make a bed to sleep in, an office to work in, and of course all you need is your own private airplane. It also shows what the aircraft manufacturers do when they come up with new planes -- that's before the airlines use the space to cram in all the seats they possibly can.
Some, perhaps even most, of the designs in this book seem to be mockups. But they are designed to be real. They fit in the space, they meet the structural requirements, and they look a hell of a lot better than any airplane I was ever in.

Customer Reviews:
An outstanding reference.......2000-11-07
This book is as nice example of photographic research on the subject and a much needed volume that fills the gap on Nazi aircraft reference. Infact most of publications are based on operational life of the types so hardly fought by allied Nations. Much has been told about their career since many sources are available on both sides to keep track of combats and many personal accounts are recorded, expecially on allied side. But materials available on manufacturing practices and equipment standards are rare. First of all, technical drawings and ancillary articles were confiscated by military authorities for intelligence examination. Large batches of equipment were destroyed ( togheter with production toolings ) and few examples are left, dispersed worldwide, as opposed to an vast factory output during the war.
This publication is dedicated to cover aircraft instrumentations, controls and systems, flying suits, engines, cockpit equipments for day fighters and rocket interceptors. A nice feature is the cockpit arrangement as seen by the pilot. For each aircraft instrument panel and side consoles are illustrated, showing the perspective of pilot as he strapped in. It is evident how different were the dials layouts, if compared to the standard of British and American manufacturers. A preciuos facet is the photo gallery of aircraft instrument and the product classification system; a nice and exhaustive portraits of ginsights are illustrated, togheter with close-ups of handgrips used for control sticks.
Finally, the volume is a real source of details pictures, casting a light on German systems. Turning the pages, it is apparent how the war efforts hastily led to a remarkable series of aeronautical advances, at astonishing pace, setting a new criterion in concepts so widely applied in postwar aircraft programmes: now it is clear why the captured aircraft were thoroughly studied, designers and their projects were so deeply scrutinezed. A great work, eagerly waiting for bombers and transports volumes.
Outstanding "One Stop" source on German aircraft cockpits........1999-08-06
A great book for the casual enthusiast or serious modeler. This book contains photos from recent restorations, vintage technical manuals and personal collections of WW II Luftwaffe fighter aircraft cockpits. Detail includes descriptions and photos of individual aircraft instruments, life suppport equipment and even subtle differences between aircraft cockpit variants. The usual suspects (BF-109, FW-190) are well covered, but MANY more obscure subjects are included... too many to list here.
Yes, it's pricey, but absolutely worth it. I can't wait for Vol. II...Bombers!

A brilliant book in every way!!.......2006-11-12
I really rely on the reviews to make decisions on purchasing a book, so I thought I would return the favor and write one myself. This book is amazing, and definatley a 5 star! It is loaded with wonderful tips, and technique. Easy to understand text and illustrations on wave anatomy, light, shadows, atmosphere, foam and spray, color, composition, values, and much more. E. John is very talented and there are pictures of his finished paintings to show. Do Not be fooled by the title, I mainly paint landscapes but also love seascapes and I have learned alot of things that I can apply to my landscapes like how to really make the sun Glow!, painting rocks under transparent water, and underpainting. Great Tips you can use on any subject. Do yourself a favor, Do Not pass this book up!!
Thank You E.John

Book Description
Constant media attention on oil spills has created global awareness of their risks and the damage they do. Often under-reported is the average cost of the cleanup - often as high as $200 per liter of oil spilled. Oil is a necessity in today's industrial society, and since our dependence on it is not likely to and any time soon, we will continue to have spills. This indispensable reference supplies the information required to proceed with cleanup efforts immediately. The revised and expanded edition of a bestseller, Basics of Oil Spill Cleanup, Second Edition provides the tools for remediating the on-and off-shore oil spills that can threaten sensitive coastal habitats. The Second Edition includes a new chapter highlighting the effects of oil on the environment and wildlife and a glossary of technical terms. After reading it, you will understand the different techniques required based on the type of oil spilled and the environmental circumstances involved in the spill. Customer Reviews:
Roy Lang's "sea and sky in oils".......2007-09-19
I have always been confused when trying to paint sand. A wonderful example of this is explained.
The waves in this book are painted and a great explaination follows.
Sea and skies made easy!.......2007-09-12
I'm a self taught weekend painter when the mood strikes, so trying to figure out some aspects of painting techniques has come after many hours of trial and error; as it should be. Self discovery in painting is one of the most rewarding of experiences a painter can have. All those "I get it experiences" when you see something come together for the first time!
I've never done a seascape before and I releasied the need for some help in the matter! This book looks as though it can do the trick and am looking forward to trying Mr. Lang's techniques!
After finding this on Amazon I looked for it locally at art stores and found it. As soon as I opened the book and leafed thru the pages I felt there is more than enough info and help for me to give it a go and try it for myself! Perhaps I'll update this review AFTER I finish a seascape!
Book Description
Sea-steading is a unique book. Perhaps more clearly than any other book ever published, Sea-steading goes directly to the core of why some people sail, and why some people would choose to make the sea their home. Filled with theoretical inquiry as well as practical tips, Sea-steading provides the reader with a wealth of information.
From sailing techniques, boat maintenance skills, financial savvy, and forage foodseven how to construct a green, self-sufficient ocean going home and see the world; it's all here!
Customer Reviews:
Brilliant.......2007-09-04
The author is exquisitely sane, and far from being rants or asides, the philosophical underpinnings are sound and very much in context. Even though my boat has a diesel auxiliary and lots of interconnected systems, this book has strengthened my resolve to save the iron genny for true emergencies and work to develop the skills of self reliance under sail.
The long out-of-print "Sailing the Farm" is another good reference for aquatic self-sufficiency, but Sea-Steading is more focused on developing competent sailing skills. There is a wealth of good knowledge here, and the writing is full of gems (even though, as he readily admits, it could have used a bit of copy-editing). I've already quoted the author twice and referred back to a passage once, and it has only been two days since I spent a very satisfying Saturday immersed in the book.
I highly recommended this for those who understand its intent. Jerome truly knows his stuff, and makes a very good case for casting off from the consumer lifestyle... not just adding a yacht to one's stable of toys. And even if you don't care about the broader philosophical context, the knowledge herein might keep you off a lee shore some dark and stormy night.
This one's a keeper.
Way too preachy.......2007-08-03
If you like being preached at, this is the book for you. FitzGerald is an atheist and I'm not, but that's not the issue. The issue for me is that he presents the basic fundamentalist position: "If you don't agree with me you're an idiot." And presents it. And presents it again. And some more. OK, I got your point, move on. He can't. I don't like it from people I ostensibly agree with, and I don't like it from people I disagree with either.
Somewhere in here there is some information about sailing, but even that is continally interrupted by his self-titled "Diatribes," and is strongly based on the "My way or the highway" view of living.
He's as fundamentalist about his boats and his ways as he is about his fundamentalist non-religion.
If FitzGerald's chosen life is making him happy you can't tell it by reading his book. If you want to get anything out of the book you'll have to be willing to wade through a lot of opinionated wastepaper.
I had high hopes, and he could have fulfilled them. We agree about many things. I was severely disappointed.
Sail Without an Engine.......2007-04-04
While peppering the book with philosophical tidbits, the author imparts his immense knowledge about sailing. Every sailor should read this.
Some good info, but..........2007-03-22
This is the first book that I have read from this author. I enjoyed the book, but was left with the feeling that my time spent reading was for a relatively little gain. That is my reasoning for a score of three instead of four stars. The author is knowledgable and has the ability to share it, but I felt that he was just "dribbling" the good stuff out, while I dutifully followed. Your are forewarned by the author, and by me, that the reader will need to slog through his philosophical "rants". I didn't mind it to much, it was interesting, and thought provoking at times. I believe this author has much authentic knowledge to share on sailing, I will consider his other books.
No book has ever been more in need of an Editor.......2007-03-09
Jerome FitzGerald is knowledeable, even expert, at describing his practical methods of sailing without an engine. Any sailor will benefit from reading the book beginning at Chapter 7. This book should be required reading for everyone seeking a license to teach sailing or to run a marina. With the right Editor this book would appeal to a very large audience.
However, Jerome FitzGerald's book, like its author, has problems. Captain FitzGerald has lived the life, somewhat successfully, that more timid souls only imagine. He is free from the consumer society. As a rugged individualist, he will always do well in times of crisis. But, anyone who finds an alcohol making still aboard ship to be more important than a diesel auxiliary probably has a drinking problem. Indeed, the book is peppered with examples of conflicts with authorities and other sailors, similar to the life of the quarrelsome land based alcoholic. The author hasn't figured out that the Marina owners prefer the twice a year sailor who has to buy all new rigging for his boat for every outing, as long as his checks arrive in a timely manner. The operators of the ship's stores would all go broke if their customers were as resourceful as Mr. FitzGeral describes himself to be.
BUY THE BOOK. LEARN EVERYTHING HE HAS TO SAY ABOUT SAILING. IGNORE HIS ALCOHOLIC RANTS.

Book Description
Black tides of spilled oil pollute the world's coasts with depressing regularity, giving scientists ample opportunity to observe their environmental impacts and learn how to clean up and restore the affected shorelines. Miles O. Hayes has been a leader in this work for over twenty years. In this highly readable autobiography, he describes his evolution as a scientist, his work in coastal oil spill contingency planning and clean up, and his personal philosophy of one's relationship with nature. A skilled raconteur, Hayes tells engrossing stories of responding to most of the recent, headline-grabbing oil spills, including the Gulf War spills, the Exxon Valdez, the Amoco Cadiz spill in France, and the Ixtoc I blowout in Mexico. Interspersed among them are personal events and adventures, such as his survival of a plane crash while mapping a remote part of Alaska. From this life story emerges a compelling statement of the ongoing conflict between environmental preservation and the exploitation of natural resources to sustain our modern society.

Book Description
The ever-growing need for energy has given rise to a significant increase in the extraction and transportation of oil. As a consequence there has been an increase in the number of spills from oil wells and tankers at sea, resulting in significant environmental problems. The development of adequate oil spill contingency plans requires information about a large number of physical, chemical and biologically complex phenomena. Research results on oil spill modelling, prevention and mitigation methods are therefore an essential tool for engineers and managers involved in such planning.
This book addresses recent research advances from many countries in oil spill modelling, prevention, behaviour, effects, control, and cleanup techniques. First presented at the Second International Conference on Oil and Hydrocarbon Spills - Modelling, Analysis and Control, the contributions are divided under the following headings: Modelling of Trajectory and Fate of Spills; Spills in Estuaries and Coastal Areas; Biological Impact of Oil Pollution; Cleanup Measures and Recovery; Experimental and Laboratory Analysis; and Oil Spill Detection and Prevention.
