Book Description

When this innovative textbook first appeared in 1984 it rapidly became a great success throughout the world and has already been translated into several European and Asian languages. Now the authors have completely revised and updated the text, including more than 2000 new literature references to work published since the first edition. No page has been left unaltered but the novel features which proved so attractive have been retained. The book presents a balanced, coherent and comprehensive account of the chemistry of the elements for both undergraduate and postgraduate students. This crucial central area of chemistry is full of ingenious experiments, intriguing compounds and exciting new discoveries. The authors specifically avoid the term `inorganic chemistry' since this evokes an outmoded view of chemistry which is no longer appropriate in the final decade of the 20th century.

Accordingly, the book covers not only the 'inorganic' chemistry of the elements, but also analytical, theoretical, industrial, organometallic, bio-inorganic and other cognate areas of chemistry. The authors have broken with recent tradition in the teaching of their subject and adopted a new and highly successful approach based on descriptive chemistry. The chemistry of the elements is still discussed within the context of an underlying theoretical framework, giving cohesion and structure to the text, but at all times the chemical facts are emphasized. Students are invited to enter the exciting world of chemical phenomena with a sound knowledge and understanding of the subject, to approach experimentation with an open mind, and to assess observations reliably. This is a book that students will not only value during their formal education, but will keep and refer to throughout their careers as chemists.

5 out of 5 stars Great reference, but it is not a popular science book.......2005-12-05

For anyone in need of a general reference on the chemical elements and their compounds (anyone majoring or working in chemistry), this book is indeed the bible. It has the advantage of being a well-written reference, but make no mistake, it is a reference - in the same way that a book on grammar, even if it is well-written, is still a book on grammar. Which means that if you are looking for an interesting and pleasantly readable popular science book about the chemical elements, and unless you have a serious technical interest in chemistry, this is probably not the best choice. The author doesn't make any claims that it was written for a popular audience, but some of the reviews seem to hint that it might be.

3 out of 5 stars A useful general reference for the chemistry major........2004-07-24

Before I got a copy of this book I was always intrigued by the references to it in other texts. It does indeed have many interesting things in it. Some of the material it covers I have not seen in any other text.

With that said however, this book is not really all that suitable as a standalone text for a course. It is missing too much descriptive chemistry and coordination theory to support an inorganic course. It is written at too high a level for a general chemistry course. It just doesn't seem to fit well anywhere.

It has a great deal of information, arranged based on periodicity, especially in the areas of terrestrial abundance and industrial chemistry. Chemistry of the Elements repeats very little of what is covered in Cotton & Wilkinson's Advanced Inorganic and is well worth having to supplement that text.

I enjoy reading this book, but I doubt I will ever use it exclusively for a course. Worth the money for the major and those interested but not for everyone!

5 out of 5 stars Chemistry Bible.......2003-10-30

Did you know that the ending ON in silicon was chosen (by Thomas Thomson) to stress the analogy of this element with both carbon and boron? I didn't. Along with such kind of historical details, Greenwood and Earnshaw's book contains a great deal of information (data, tables, graphs, etc.) about the elements of the Periodic Table and their corresponding compounds. The material is logically organized in 31 chapters, which are followed by 7 appendices (1341 pages!). This chemistry bible should stay on the desk of every chemist and scientist alike.

5 out of 5 stars An essential for a Chemistry library.......2000-07-17

I bought this book as a recommended text to accompany a senior/graduate two semester inorganic chemistry of the elements course. One of the few "texts" I would have had no problems buying outside of school. The information is extensive, but well organized and useful.

5 out of 5 stars Professor of Chemistry.......2000-05-25

This book is an essential component of the practicicing inorganic chemist's library. The fundamental information contained within are the seeds for the further study of chemistry.

Book Description

Understanding the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements is critical for success in the chemistry classroom and laboratory. In today's classroom, students not only need to understand the properties of the chemical elements, but how these elements play such an integral role in industry, the earth and the environment, and in modern life. No resource provides a better introduction than Robert Krebs's The History and Use of Our Earth's Chemical Elements. In this thoroughly revised edition, with extensive new and updated examples on the use of the chemical elements, the elements are examined within their groups, enabling students to make connections between elements of similar structure. In addition, the discovery and history of each element - from those known from ancient times to those created in the modern laboratory - is explained clearly and concisely. In addition to the handy "Guide to the Chemical Elements" that comprises the bulk of the work, The History and Use of Our Earth's Chemical Elements includes other useful features: BLIntroductory material on the basics of chemistry and the Periodic Table BLAppendices on the discoverers of the chemical elements BLA glossary of words commonly used in chemistry and chemical engineering BLA complete bibliography of useful resources, including websites All of this information makes The History and Use of Our Earth's Chemical Elements the ideal one-volume resource for understanding the importance of the chemical elements.

1 out of 5 stars Very Disappointing.......1999-09-03

I wanted so much to like this book-- there is such need for a good tome of this sort. Unfortunately this book doesn't satisfy that need. I had hoped it would give much in-depth knowledge of each element. It does not: it is remedial, and, sadly, that in the truest sense. Now, even a remedial book of this sort would be nothing to sneer at, and I would have rated it much, much higher were it not for the fact that, not only does it offer but a smidgeon of information about each element, but that information is badly written (often quite prolix), and worse, replete with the most glaring inaccuracies and downright errors! I found myself scribbling corrections and refutations in the margins, I was so annoyed! One could quote literally dozens -- almost every little element-entry contained one or more flat inaccuracies. The definitions of technical terms alone are so poor I can only surmise the author has but a poor understanding of his subject. And indeed the information he presents seems to be an uneven patchwork of data gleaned from all over, some from old books now quite out of date. (He, for example, writes that Thorium is "like hafnium above it in Group IVA of the periodic chart"-- and that's no longer the case as of the 1940s. He says that Iodine "has no naturally occuring isotopes" -- and his definition of an isotope is an element "with more than the normal neutrons" in its nucleus). He writes that Helium was one of the elements "predicted by the periodic chart" -- totally wrong: far from being predicted by the chart, the discovery of the Noble Gases in toto, from 1895 to 1899, came as a complete surprise to all. In fact, no one had the slightest clue that an entire group of the chart remained to be discovered. I could go on-- and on-- AND ON --- with this litany of error, but why? Better to look for an old copy of Hammond's "Encyclopedia of the Chemical Elements", or Greenwood & Earnshaw's magisterial "Chemistry of the Elements", than wasting your money on this.

Book Description

This concise, elementary treatment illustrates the ways in which an atomic-molecular perspective yields new insights into macroscopic thermodynamics. Starting with an analysis of some very simple microcanonical ensembles, it proceeds to the Boltzmann distribution law and a systematic exploration of the proper formulation, evaluation, and application of partition functions. 1974 edition.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars this old book the best elementary introduction to statistical mechanics.......2007-03-05

This is a wonderful introduction to statistical mechanics, especially for chemistry students taking undergraduate physical chemistry. Leonard K. Nash was a Harvard professor of chemistry whose primary interest became chemical education and the history of chemistry. This book was a classic in the 1960's, but later went out of print. Dover has done a real service in reissuing it. The book is remarkable for its lucidity and pedagogical clarity. It's the best introduction I know to the very difficult subject, especially for beginners, of statistical mechanics. For starters, it gives a wonderfully insightful look at the meaning of the statistics of the statistical ensembles.

This book puts most of the current physical chemistry textbooks to shame in its treatment of the subject. It could serve as a stand-alone text for the statistical mechanics part of a physical chemistry sequence.

If you are taking this course, you owe it to yourself to get this book. The price cannot be beat.

I also recommend the companion book by Nash on macroscopic thermodynamics, together with Fermi's classic text (also available from Dover).

At a more elementary level, Dover has re-issued Bruce Mahan's famous thermodynamics book. I believe he used this for advanced freshmen at Berkeley. If you are having trouble with thermodynamics in physical chemistry, even at the Fermi or Nash level, do yourself a favor and get Mahan's book. Even if you're not having trouble, you may very well find it helpful.

              Description:
Despite a long research history over the past 150 years, the geometry, kinematics, and dynamic evolution of the Himalayan orogen remain poorly understood. This is mainly due to continued emphasis on the two-dimensionality of the Himalayan orogenic architecture and extrapolation of geologic relationships from a few well-studied but small areas to the rest of the orogen. Confusion and misconception are also widespread in the Himalayan literature in terms of the geographic, stratigraphic, and structural divisions. To clarify these issues and to provide a new platform for those who are interested in studying the geologic development of this spectacular mountain belt, I systematically review the essential observations relevant to the along-strike variation of the Himalayan geologic framework and its role in Cenozoic Himalayan exhumation, metamorphism and foreland sedimentation. A main focus of my synthesis is to elucidate the emplacement history of the high-grade Greater Himalayan Crystalline Complex (GHC) that occupies the core of the orogen. Because the north-dipping Main Central Thrust (MCT) above and South Tibet Detachment (STD) below bound the GHC in most parts of the Himalaya, it is critical to determine the relationship between them in map and cross-section views. The exposed map pattern in the central Himalaya (i.e., Nepal) indicates that the MCT has a flat-ramp geometry. The thrust flat in the south carries a 2-15-km-thick slab of the GHC over the Lesser Himalayan Sequence (LHS) and creates a large hanging-wall fault-bend fold continuing >100 km south of the MCT ramp zone. In the western Himalayan orogen at the longitude ~77^oE, the MCT exhibits a major lateral ramp (the Mandi ramp). West of this ramp, the MCT places the low-grade Tethyan Himalayan Sequence (THS) over the low-grade LHS, whereas east of the ramp, the MCT places the high-grade GHC over the low-grade LHS. This along-strike change in stratigraphic juxtaposition and metamorphic grade across the MCT indicates a westward decrease in its slip magnitude, possibly a result of a westward decrease in total crustal shortening along the Himalayan orogen. Everywhere exposed, the STD follows roughly the same stratigraphic horizon at the base of the THS, exhibiting a long (>100 km) hanging-wall flat. This relationship suggests that the STD may have initiated along a preexisting lithologic contact or the subhorizontal brittle-ductile transition zone in the middle crust. Although the STD has the THS in its hanging wall everywhere in the Himalayan orogen, no THS footwall cutoffs have been identified. This has made slip estimates of the STD exceedingly difficult. The southernmost trace of the STD either merges with the MCT (e.g., in Zanskar) or lies within 1-2 km of the MCT frontal trace (e.g., in Bhutan), suggesting that the MCT may join the STD in their up-dip directions to the south. This geometry, largely neglected by the existing models, has important implications for the deformation, exhumation, and sedimentation history of the entire Himalayan orogen.
